Just One Vote

June 30, 2010 - by Donny Shaw

A single senator now stands between millions of unemployed Americans and the extension of unemployment insurance benefits they need in order to feed their families and gas up their cars to get to job interviews. The Hill reports:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Wednesday said two Republicans will support his new extension to unemployment benefits and that he is hopeful a third and final Republican will eventually back the bill.

“If we had Senator Byrd’s replacement we would have 60,” he told reporters. “We have to wait and see what a couple of Republicans do.”

Reid did not say which Republicans have chosen to support the bill, but one of them is expected to be Sen. Olympia Snowe (Maine), who last week said she would support a stand-alone extension of unemployment benefits.

We’ll know later today or tomorrow morning if the Republicans and conservative Sen. Ben Nelson [D, NE] (pictured) are going let the Democrats’ latest attempt at passing an extension, and the last attempt before they leave for July 4 recess, get an up-or-down vote.

On recess till July 12th. So even if the House voted…no Senate vote can happen, correct? Not in session tomorrow b/c of Byrd lying in respose.

They could after 5:30 etc but if not in session, no business can take place. Even if they did, the REPUBLICANS are going to do the same thing…block with a fillabuster…if they wanted to they could have let the vote happen without the objection creating the fillabuster…and democrats could have passed at any time with 51 votes which they have been tryign to so….no congress has ever had the emergency assistance paid for, it has always been passed as an emeregency which this is..and does not need to be paid for or offset due to emergency clause etc..pure posturing/stunts by Republicans no other explanation.

    Article:

“Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) also took the floor in favor of the extension of unemployment benefits. He said that US companies are hoarding $1.84 trillion in cash and that those companies are not hiring. He said the unemployment report for May was disappointing and the unemployment numbers are even worse than the 15 million unemployed reported by the government. Senator Harkin said that there are 10 workers for each available job. He mentions that there are 30 million unemployed (actually there are 15 million unemployed and 15 million underemployed) looking for 2.6 million job openings and he is absolutely correct! Here’s a senator who knows that the numbers are even worse than advertised.”

The republicans are in a rush to start the 4th of July weekend. Also to celebrate another successful filibuster.

If it wasnt clear before, I think the REPUBLICANs in Congress just declared WAR on their own people and citizens…they dont care and treat our enemies better..there is no excuse for this activity-they are a disgrace to this Country and should be ashamed to have the UNITED STATED in front of their title.

They don’t care about us! If they did they would have passed this already and not put us thru all this bull shit! They are just a bunch of greedy, senseless bastards. I hope that anyone that voted Republican has had just about enough of these ass holes. I’ve kept positive this whole time and let me tell you, what a let down!

  • illucy 06/30/2010 5:08pm

Just remember who these Republicans are come November. Sen Reid can’t bring the vote if he doesn’t have it. The Republicans are tieing this up with a debate now knowing that this will go past the 4th of July extended weekend… and they don’t care. The poor unemployed folks don’t vote for them or give them money so they don’t care if you starve or get thrown out of your homes. They care about big companies that give them money. They care about wall street, banks, owners of business… not the blue collar worker. Not the person who got laid off. They think it’s good business to lay people off to increase a business bottom line… wake up and throw them out.

I’m just afraid someone is going to martyr themselves over the holidays. There are some really bad comments on other sites headed that way. It is a sad state of affairs when the citizens of a country as ours, is driven to desparation to the point of wanting hurt other people just to bring the attention of the situation to the forefront. Bad Bad Bad State of Affairs.

Republican Representatives and Senators you think this helping you with the American Unemployed
Voters…well you are wrong! Because you voted no to the unemployment extension because it is not paid for you have hurt you future. Voters will remember this! You will be voted out! Yes majority of americans want the spending to stop and get control of the deficeit but not at the expense of the unemployed americans. Cut your own salaries and this will pay for the unemployment extension. Stop the bailouts to wallstreet, banks, and other countries and this will pay for the unemployment. I can’t wait for November 2010 and November 2012. WE PROMISE YOU TO EVERY POLITICIAN WHO VOTED NO YOU WILL BE VOTED OUT!!!!!!

Look this economy is not going anywhere, were screwed anyway. the republicans know DAM WELL two months is just a fucking stall tactic to screw with the democrat’s time. They don’t care about us. this is all about stalling until the elections and then some.

We are all very skilled people with degrees and journeyman cards that can not find work. This shit is going to go on for a other YEAR. They know it … maybe longer. This situation is a lot worse than anyone thought when Obama took office.

200,00 people will lose there unemployment benefits each month that this is not passed
and the states will have to lay off teaches and polices officers and firefighters
if the job package does not go through, not to mention the medicaid and medicare situation that the states are facing.

By the end of the year we could be right back where we started when Obama took office.
The cuts will run deep. No unemployment and no help from the states because there broke.

    Tent Cities will spring up.

Now your off for the next 10 day enjoying life while we who depend on our benefits are left in despair. I never dreamed that I would like in the Country of the Free and be left in the Cold. I’m in total Shock and overwhelm with frustration……..

  • Jonapoo4u 06/30/2010 5:16pm

the rate i seen i dont remember was a rate of 200,000 per week losing their benifits

  • Nicky 06/30/2010 5:16pm

To bad someone doesn’t start a class action suit againist the gov’t to get all of their employement insurance and social security back plus interest that they paid all of thier lives into. What’s funny to me is that Social Security sends out how much you earn every year and how much ss they take out. It wouldn’t be to hard to figure out the taxes they took out for UI and SSI. I just bet each of us probably have paid at least $500,000 to a million into thier pockets. Make them pay it back to each individual person plus interest. Personally I could live off of the money I paid in all those years for a long long time.

  • Christine58 06/30/2010 5:17pm

“Sen. Johnny Isakson [R, GA] has been a main supporter of extending the closing date for the homebuyer tax credit. He even co-sponsored an amendment on it with Reid to a previous version of the bill. Putting the closing date extension in the bill is likely designed to attract Isakson’s support for the full package. But Isakson is up for re-election in November and, like the rest of the Republicans, likely doesn’t want to vote in favor of the $34 billion in new deficit spending for unemployment insurance benefits.”

Guess who Im not voting for in November. I am sooo upset .My benefits run out in three weeks. Welfare wont help with the bills. My family is soo screwed(Excuse my language) i truly am crying right now. Please help me pray because I am praying for all of us
