Just One Vote

June 30, 2010 - by Donny Shaw

A single senator now stands between millions of unemployed Americans and the extension of unemployment insurance benefits they need in order to feed their families and gas up their cars to get to job interviews. The Hill reports:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Wednesday said two Republicans will support his new extension to unemployment benefits and that he is hopeful a third and final Republican will eventually back the bill.

“If we had Senator Byrd’s replacement we would have 60,” he told reporters. “We have to wait and see what a couple of Republicans do.”

Reid did not say which Republicans have chosen to support the bill, but one of them is expected to be Sen. Olympia Snowe (Maine), who last week said she would support a stand-alone extension of unemployment benefits.

We’ll know later today or tomorrow morning if the Republicans and conservative Sen. Ben Nelson [D, NE] (pictured) are going let the Democrats’ latest attempt at passing an extension, and the last attempt before they leave for July 4 recess, get an up-or-down vote.

It is so frustrating when people talk about “why church and state are separate” when it is obvious they have absolutely no idea what they are talking about. Separation of church and state is about protecting a person’s freedom to their religious beliefs without interference from the government.
It is derived from the First Amendment of the United States Constitution, which reads, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof . . . .”

Ironically… A person’s freedom of religion is completely different from the separation of church and state because all individuals have the right to practice their own beliefs (there are so many). Its the traditions that are apparently most peoples problem…not a person’s beliefs (traditions are a historical version of the children game “telephone”…one generation has the truth, the next with take what they want and so on) Mixing them I believe to be done by ignorance. LEARN YOUR HISTORY and NOT JUST CURRENT POLITICS!!! You can title it how you want and relate the two by your own reason but “freedom of religion” and “separation of church and states” are too separate issues.

(Smiles) Amen to that! A little positivity now and again is very refreshing on the boards. :)

ONE VOTE??? this is just unbelievable! I’ve signed on all the petitions, I sent letters to senators and congressmen, to no avail it seems.

WHY CANT THEY GET THEIR ACT TOGETHER?

They will go on and have their nice 4th of July Holiday, while we are sitting at home anxious, pulling our hairs and not knowing what to do. This is just pathetic.

WHAT ELSE DO WE NEED TO DO??
I’ve read this on Huffington Post: “HuffPost readers: Have you been affected by the current lapse in benefits? Tell us about it — email arthur@huffingtonpost.com.”

We should all write him our personal stories. Part of the problem is that the unemployed are just numbers without a face to the American people. We should tell them that there’s a face behind a number, and a story.

Not to this American. Having been in your predicament back during the oil ‘bust’ of the 1980’s, one scrounged what meager living one could, particularly when unemployment benefits ceased.

No, a majority of Americans want your benefits, your insurance, to be continued. Or I miss my guess.

Remember who voted in your state and vote the next election cycle for the ones on the unemployed side of things. That way they will be unemployed and they can whimper at their speech when they concede.

    Right on!
Mr. Donny Shaw is “on-point” with what is going on in Washington.
OpenCongress.org and Mr. Shaw do the best job of effectively keeping Americans in-touch to the truth of politics and greed. The reality of how the government that was set-up to be for the people and by the people is ugly, but it’s good to know the truth. It’s refreshing to have a resource that has not sold out to Corporate America and is censored, like FOX,CNN, ABC,MSN,WSJ,etc.

Also, way-to-go on the most user friendly blog site!

THE FED ED IS A EXTRA 20 WEEKS OF BENEFITS GIVEN TO CERTAIN STATE WITH HIGH UNEMPLOYMENT LIKE CALIFORNIA , YOU WOULD RECEIVE AFTER YOU FINISHED YOUR 4TH TIER. THEY SAY YOU KNOW WHEN YOUR ON IT, BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO WRITE DOWN PLACES WHERE YOU APPLIED.

THE FED ED EXTENTION EXPIRED EARLY WEEKS OF JUNE, HOPEFULLY THE NEW EXTENDER BILL WILL START IT UP AGAIN.

Reid said he is hopeful another Republican will come forward to support the measure.

ANY REPUBLICAN WHO COMES FORWARD AND VOTES YES FOR THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, I GAURANTEE THE 2 MILLION UNEMPLOYED WORKER WILL NOT FOR GET, AND WILL MAKE SHURE TO VOTE FOR YOU IN THE FUTURE.

  • rlaughli 06/30/2010 8:35am

Compromise please just compromise and get this done already, Congress are the terrorists of the unemployed. This whole experience has opened my eyes and made my choices clear for the November elections. If you are an incumbent regardless of party you won’t get my vote. Send a clear and unpartisan message this November America; vote every incumbent up for re-election out. Maybe then they will get the message.

Was this post in reply to my post about voting all incumbents out of office? If so you better get your facts straight on what is really going on with UI extensions and both parties. I gladly welcome any debate you can muster. Harry Reid refuses to put a standalone bill before the Senate even though he was told such a bill would get republican support. Now tell me what party does he belong to? Members of his own party have drafted standalone UI extension bills and he refuses to put them forward. I am concerned because the bill he is trying to get a vote on tonight or tomorrow is still not a standalone bill. Both parties are to blame for the mess we are in and both should pay a price in November. Democrats in congress were lock step with Bush on both wars and bank bailouts BTW.
