Just One Vote

June 30, 2010 - by Donny Shaw

A single senator now stands between millions of unemployed Americans and the extension of unemployment insurance benefits they need in order to feed their families and gas up their cars to get to job interviews. The Hill reports:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Wednesday said two Republicans will support his new extension to unemployment benefits and that he is hopeful a third and final Republican will eventually back the bill.

“If we had Senator Byrd’s replacement we would have 60,” he told reporters. “We have to wait and see what a couple of Republicans do.”

Reid did not say which Republicans have chosen to support the bill, but one of them is expected to be Sen. Olympia Snowe (Maine), who last week said she would support a stand-alone extension of unemployment benefits.

We’ll know later today or tomorrow morning if the Republicans and conservative Sen. Ben Nelson [D, NE] (pictured) are going let the Democrats’ latest attempt at passing an extension, and the last attempt before they leave for July 4 recess, get an up-or-down vote.

As we all remember, after 9/11 the members of Congress worked together as never before. Now, this is no 9/11 in the sense that lives have been lost by terrorism, but lives are still at stake. The lives of children whose parents cannot take care of them because of the unemployment, the lives of people who are becoming suicidal because they see no way out. Congress, come together again. The people who elected you are in need. Pass this bill and get it to the President today.

The Republicans block aid to the American people and play games for weeks but the Republicans APOLOGIZE to BP for having to pay and create a 20 billion dollar fund-they call it a shake down…WOW! Bunch of idiots!

The crowd also was with Obama when he reminded people of how Texas GOP Rep. Joe Barton apologized to BP, calling it a tragedy that the federal government was shaking them down by forcing the company to create a $20 billion reparation fund.

Yes, I remember that from a couple of weeks ago. I couldn’t believe it..wanted to jump thru the TV and strangle the guy. But even the Republicans jumped on him right away and made him retract what he said later in the day. I love it when the Republicans make asses out of themselves.

Senator Ben Nelson is the devil incarnate. His selfish values reflect this. Can you believe he voted against the Senate jobs and extended unemployment-insurance bill simply because his state of Nebraska has a low-unemployment rate of 4.9%???
Therefore, Nelson has no obligation to help out unemployed people across the nation because he only has to answer to his constituents. He needs to remember we are one Nation, indivisible.

Never give up…I know easier said than done but when all the dust clears you will be better for hanging on and persevering-yoru family will thank you for it! It can only get better because this is bad but your feeling is the worst scenario..as long as the sun comes up tomorrow, you still have a chance. Talk to someone right away if you are really considering this.

Hello fellow unemployed Americans…Wow!! Isn’t it great that we live in a country where the ruling parties bicker so much back and forth that we, it’s citizens, end up paying for it the most. I will no longer think about the Republicans or the Democrats in the same way ever again. The really sad thing is that a bunch of bills that go through this same process hinge on which fat cat will lose money, and which will gain. It has been long overdue that Washington needs a wake up call to refresh their memories that they work for us, not against us. The all mighty dollar has ruined the reputation of many a good man and woman. Our government is going to change one bit. It does not matter who is in office. It matters who has the votes and who is going to prosper financially from those votes. I pray constantly and I try to think positively about the outcome of this bill passage, but who are we kidding. Happy Independence day everyone!! God Bless the America that could be…

I hope one more republican senator can put the republican/democratic issues aside and vote for the people. This is one vote that would feed families, pay bills and keep the roofs over the heads of struggling families. I would urge the republican senators to take a look at the people of their home states and how will they be celebrating the holiday. The senators will be going home to one of their many beautiful homes and their well taken care of families and have a huge cookout paid for by us. While many of us will be stressed out and scared of where do we go now? How can the senators leave and go home knowing that millions of Americans will not be celebrating, many of us will turn our backs to the country that has turned their backs on us. MAKE A VOTE FOR THE PEOPLE, BE HUMAN FOR ONCE!

  • illucy 06/30/2010 1:38pm

They are not voting on this until tomorrow. Harry Reid probably doesn’t have the votes and there is only one more shot at this before July 4th vacation. If that is what is going on… get it right and do it tomorrow with the votes. I hope so for the millions of americans that need this. Shame on Republicans and the Few Democrats that won’t support this… like Bill Nelson (D) from Florida.

  • indimom2010 06/30/2010 1:42pm

Yes on C span 2 Debbie Stabenow is pleading for the unemployed… God Bless her

Thank You so much Debbie for standing up for us.
