The Week Ahead in Congress
July 12, 2010 - by Donny Shaw
As Congress returns from their week-long vacation this afternoon, all the big items on the Democrats’ legislative agenda remain stuck in the Senate where the Democrats are one vote short of overcoming Republican filibusters due to the passing of Sen. Robert Byrd [D, WV].
Senate Democrats have 59 votes right now for the two big bills they are trying to finish up, the bill to extend unemployment insurance benefits and the financial reform bill, but they are both being filibustered by the Republicans and it takes 60 votes to break a filibuster. Because of that, they will stay on hold for at least the first part of the week as the Democrats wait for West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin to appoint an interim replacement for Byrd and provide them with the 60th vote. Manchin said on Friday that he would not appoint a replacement until after the West Virginia state legislature meets in a special session that has been called for on Thursday, July 15, to vote on a clarification of the state’s law on filling vacant Senate seats.
But it’s still possible that a Byrd replacement will come earlier than Thursday. On Saturday Manchin told Politico that he was meeting with election attorneys over the weekend who would give him “all the pros and cons” on appointing a replacement earlier in the week versus waiting until after the July 15th legislative session. Once Manchin names his replacement, the unemployment insurance bill will still have to jump through several procedural hurdles, which I have outlined in this previous post. The financial reform bill, on the other hand, is in the form of a conference report, which is “privileged,” and will be able to pass a little more quickly.
Anyways, all of that is on hold for now. Please keep checking back in with us here, or at Twitter and Facebook.

I’m watching CSPAN now, and have been watching it for a while, if you want to see how your tax dollars are being used go to CSPAN, they are just setting there having a quorum call waiting for Senators to speak!! Its been going on for hours with no one speaking!!! Everyone looks like they are ready to fall asleep!!! They are and have been doing nothing for hours! Must be resting up after there long vacation!! Assholes! I wish I could get invited to speak in front of the Senate cause I would tear into them like a fat person tearing into a case of twinkies!!! God dam!! I would start with your fired, your fired, your fired, you can stay if you stop acting like an asshole, and you your fired to the 54th power! Not only are you fired but Im gonna kick your ass all the way out of the Senate Hall, down the hallway and keep kicking your ass until Im sure out out the front door you ass clown!!!
My unemployment benefits have expired. I hoped for an extension but now waiting with thousands of others. So many older experienced people looking. This blog has made me more aware of what is going on in the Senate. I thanked my two senators for voting yes.
I am at a loss for words. Depressing comes to mind, so does eviction, no electric..ect. Im tired of crying, plus it does no good. WAKE UP MANCHIN! I know that he knows how this is affecting millions of people who honestly need this help.I hate being at the mercy of other people. Stress is getting to the point where I have a constant headache. You know, the senators and whoever else will have to answer for their actions one day.
I just Senator Murry office here in washington state and asked the questions on why aren’t they moving forward with it.. her statement to me was they need more compromises on the bill and passing it before the month long recess in August is looking very GRIM………
BUSH ADMIN/GOP/REPUBLICANS/FREEDOMWORKS NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS ARE TO BLAME. THEY ARE THE GREEDY AND SELFISH MONSTERS.
+THEY OWN THE WEALTH, THEY OWN OUR COUNTRY, AND THEY WANT TO KEEP IT THAT WAY.
+THEY CANT COMPREHEND THE SUFFERING THEY CAUSE TO MILLIONS OF AMERICANS.
+THEY ONLY HAVE ONE THING IN MIND, MAKING SURE THEY DONT LOSE THEIR WAY OF LIFE…BILLIONS OF $$$$.
+THEY HAVE BEEN BRED TO CHEAT THE SYSTEM, THROW OUT SCRUPLES IN THE NAME OF MAKING MONEY, AND EARN AS MUCH AS THEY CAN OFF THE BACKS OF HARD WORKING AMERICANS.
+THIS IS NOT WHAT OUR FOUNDING FATHERS HAD IN MIND.
Oil & Gas Industry, history of strong influence in Washington. Individuals and political action committees affiliated with oil and gas companies have donated $238.7 MILLION to candidates and parties since the 1990 (Bush Senior term) election cycle, 75% of which has gone to REPUBLICANS…
Former oilmen George Bush and Dick Cheney occupied the White House for 8 yrs, the oil and gas industry could not win support for repealing bans on drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. However, Congress voted in 2008 to lift a ban on offshore drilling… story on opensecrets.org
Drilling bans were lifted during Bush’s last months in WhiteHouse in 2008. The After consumers & transportation industry & economy felt the pain of $1-$2 price hikes of gas, during Summer 2007. It was “the straw that broke the Camel’s backs”, PUTTING USA/AMERICANS INTO TAIL SPIN.
<REPUBS/GOP OIL INDUSTRY NEED TO STOP BLOCKING OBAMA ADMIN FROM TRYING TO HOLD ACCOUNTABLE OIL DRILLING COMPANIES TO SAFE PRACTICES, BEFORE THEY DESTROY MORE LIVES!
<REPUBS IN THE SENATE NEED TO STOP FILIBUSTERING UI EXT BILLS AND TAKE CARE OF MILLIONS OF AMERICANS LIVES THAT THEY HAVE AND ARE DISTROYING!
<Bush Admin/GOP wasn’t concerned about losing jobs in 2007 with first largest layoffs.
Yet, now that Obama Admin is trying to help USA by putting pressure on all drilling companies to stop, which would put add pressure to BP’s drilling company from other drilling companies. Now GOP/FoxNews put out the “JOBS CONCERN”, just another smoke screen.
<It is not about doing the right thing for these Americans, it is about money, lots and lots of money for Oil&Gas industry/few Wealthy families who control our Bills with their contributions and media spins.

FreedomWorks/Tea Party movement has some big money donations, and the Oil & Gas Industry Special Interest group that contribute to 80% to Republicans, are lead in contributions by Kosh Industries.
+Here are donation recorded for a few members of the family. This is pocket change for them. The unemployed dont have Lobbyist and Special Interest groups. This is how it appears for Democrats and millions of average Americans. NO MONEY, NO VOICE, NO CRUMBS.

Tea Party Movement benefits from millions of dollars from conservative foundations that are derived from wealthy U.S. families and their business interests. Money flowing primarily through two conservative groups: Americans for Prosperity and FreedomWorks. FreedomWorks receives substantial funding from David Koch of Koch Industries, the largest privately-held energy company in the country, which make substantial annual donations to conservative org…
Letter was written to Senators:
On behalf of hundreds of thousands of FreedomWorks members nationwide, I urge you to carefully consider all aspects of H.R. 4213…
If the bill comes to a vote as currently formulated, we encourage you to vote NO, and will track the vote on our Economic Scorecard….
Signed FreedomWorks President and CEO
(FreedomWorks funds Tea Party ;)
Freedom Works(TEA PARTY)andAmericansforProsperity are organization being used as Fronts and their Activist tap the fears of the “higher middle class” who are trying to protect their small businesses and wallets from being taxed. Protecting what they have worked hard to achieve. Americans (VOTERS) would do well not to be deceived by these organizations true mission: A COMMITMENT TO EDUCATING CITIZENS ABOUT ECONOMIC POLICY (Capitalism AT ITS UGLY, GREEDY WORSE) AND A RETURN OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO ITS CONSTITUTIONAL LIMIT (MEANING,DON’T TOUCH THEIR WEALTH) . Senators aren’t concerned about listening to average Americans (employed or unemployed). These Republicans and some Democrats Politicians work for BIG MONEY.
+They won’t waste their time reading blogs, because they know what is going on.
It does not matter to them.
+They want the states to deal with the problem, and the state politician want to sweep the problem under the carpet. Or make their minimum wage front line employees tell the unemployed “Sorry, there is nothing the state can do for you right now. Good-bye. Click”
+These Senators just care about getting elected in November.
+They are listening to FreedomWorks Orginazation to get them elected. It is the FRONT FOR BIG MONEY and helps pay for Tea Party movement to get them in. +Media points out is Scott Brown, R-MA scenario (He is the wolf in sheeps clothing)
VOTE IN NOVEMBER FOR YOUR SENATOR PICK!
Halliburton, the company once headed by former Republican Vice President Dick Cheney contributed $15,500 to federal candidates during June, according to a Center for Responsive Politics review of their political action committee’s most recent campaign finance filing.
That amount represents the third largest month of donations by the PAC this election cycle.
The giving comes at a time when the Texas-based company is weathering a political storm for its involvement on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig that exploded on April 20 and sunk in the Gulf of Mexico, causing a massive amount oil to spill into the surrounding waters. Investigations are currently underway to determine how and why the spill occurred — and who should be held responsible — by Congress and the Department of Justice. Read Full Story: on opensecrets.org
Tea Party favorite Sharron Angle:
If you’ve been following the ongoing Senate campaign of Nevada hopeful Sharron Angle, you know that she’s sick and tired of the long-term unemployed taking home all of those cushy unemployment benefits. Angle’s angle is that these millions of Americans are just living large on the dole and need to have their unemployment benefits terminated so that they will be motivated to go out and get a job — one of the millions of magical jobs that exist in Sharron Angle’s mind!

Governer Machin (West Virginia) like most Americans. He wants to preserve the job he has(Politician), and advance his career. He is probably making decisions by listening to political power and money. Does anyone really think he or any of the SENATORS who have stood in the way of passing Unemployment Insurance Extension to the millions who need it, are losing any sleep?
The worse SENATORS are the ones who are probably lining their pockets big time right now by being the one vote that makes completely blocks UI Bills from passing. That would probably be Senators like Jim Bunning, R-KY on the obvious ungly corrupt Senators list.
The millions of ordinary Americans that have been forced into unemployment lines may not have very much money, or even empathy from other fellow employed Americans at this point, but you have the power of your vote in November. Take names, and make sure you make it to that appointment.
Repubs only care about their own job preservation. Repubs are working hard to win November’s election with the help of Tea Party(FreedomWorks) and their BIG CONTRIBUTIONS FROM SPECIAL INTEREST Groups. Fore instance, Oil&Gas Industry Contribution 2009-2010 Koch Industries$724,300, Repubs86% & Dems14%. Also has made big contributions to FreedomWorks/Tea Party funder.
-FreedomWorks Org./TeaParty movement putting a great deal of pressure on Senators to not support UI Ext. with stimulus that would require corporations to help pay back through taxes.
DOESN’T MAKE SENSE, THEY CREATED THE UNEMPLOYMENT, THEY HAVE AND ARE MAKING TONS OF PROFITS, BUT THEY DON’T WANT TO HELP PAY FOR IT.
CONTINUED… BIG CORPORATIONS, SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS (BANKING/OIL INDUSTRIES), FEW EXTREMELY WEALTHY FAMILIES, AND GOP.
DOESN’T MAKE SENSE, THEY CREATED THE UNEMPLOYMENT, THEY HAVE AND ARE MAKING TONS OF PROFITS, BUT THEY DON’T WANT TO HELP PAY FOR IT.
+Most big CORPORATIONS have made RECORD PROFITS this year by cutting jobs long-term. They started layoffs in 2007, and putting millions of Americans on unemployment.
+They created the business mantra of “DO MORE, WITH LESS”, causing today’s workforce to do more job responsibilities with no more pay. 55% American workforce are working reduced hours, reduction in pay, leave without pay, forced to take part-time to keep job.
It’s so amusing to see you white people cry justice and nothing gets done! Grin and bear it! We been doing this for awhile and nobody cared. If you are not part of the status quo, you realize you aint s**t!
Hey Crazy! How are you, safe and secure…for now. If you have nothing nice to say then say nothing at all. People here are hurting and not a one of them hurt you. Your low self esteem shows. The people here are hard working people and do not deserve you comments. Sorry you are so opressed. Grow up! No one here sees white or black but you. If your so amused give me your address and I will amuse you. Or are you to scared
Where are you crazy… calling you out.. the white woman all of 5’2" from pa will come and kick your fucking ass. You have no right to torture these people with you racist comments. They are suffering enough. Come on bitch, I promise to amuze your ass. Let’s see if you have the balls.
crazyhorse, you are one ignorant person. How you can say something so idiotic. Assuming everyone “crying” for their jobs is white. I am not! I am Mexican! What many would consider the lower class American citizen from an unbran area. But I earned a Bachelor degree while I was working a full time job. Unfortunately, I was laid off while I was going to school and since then couldnt find any work. Many places dont want to hire a freshly graduated college student. And the low paying jobs are too afraid to hire me, in fear that I will quit too early on for a better job offer.
So, don’t assume anything. Everyone is suffering lower and upper class citizens. Just be thankful you still have your job and quit pulling everyone that lost theirs down.
Did I really just read that?
This is no place for racist comments. We can flag people like that cant we?
We need to do something more drastic. This can not happen! I worked my whole life and I will lose everything. Maybe Manchin should lose everything he worked (LOL)for. We need to keep on his ass! Call him! If you are close by go to his office, his home, bring your kids! Show him what it is like to be hungry and scared.
I can’t believe someone would post a racist commnent at a time like this,. We need to all stick together, I don’t see no color in this situation. We are all Americans!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It is pretty bad. I went to the food stamp office today to see if i could atleast be able to feed my children. Guess what i do not qualify. My husband gross is to much. please! He grosses 748.00 but only brings home 300.00 a week. that is supposed to pay mortgage, lights, gas, and buy food. They have lost there minds. least to say we will be losing our home soon and the kids go back to school soon. How am i supposed to put them threw school? People are destitute, and the fat cat senetors don’t care, cause they can set down for a great dinner every night and not worry about what there going to feed there kids. While we all are having nervous breakdowns trying to figure out how to put food in our childrens mouths. It’s pretty bad when i don’t eat supper so i know my kids stomaches are full. They deffinetly need to get there heads out of there butts and pass this asap. I look for jobs for hours everyday and guess what out of the 25 apps I put in a day, i get nothing!!!!!
sorry everybody!
