Dems Will Have 60 Votes for Passing the Unemployment Extension Bill Next Week

July 12, 2010 - by Donny Shaw

Apparently West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin’s chat last night with election attorneys didn’t convince him to go ahead with appointing an interim replacement for Sen. Robert Byrd [D, WV] before the legislature in his state meets on Thursday. Here’s the latest on the situation, from the AP:

West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin says he’ll make a temporary appointment to the late Robert C. Byrd’s Senate seat by Sunday.

Manchin said Monday he could announce his pick as early as Friday.

That means this entire week will go by without any Senate work on the unemployment insurance extension bill unless Sen. Ben Nelson [D, NE] or another Republican changes their position on it. It does sound pretty certain that there will be a replacement for Byrd by the beginning of next week, but, in that case, even under the best-case scenario, it will take the Senate until the end of next week to get the bill to final passage. And then the process of implementing the extension in the 50 states begins…

On the bright side, when Congress does finally get the extension done and it is signed into law (most likely during the final week of July), the bill is will allow for benefits to be paid back retroactively to everyone who has been cut off since they expired on June 2nd. By the end of July, 3.2 million unemployed Americans will have had their benefits cut off prematurely due to the Senate stalemate.

Not cool, Our rent was due 2 weeks ago and our land lord is running out of patients. So this means we are a week away from living in a tent for a couple of until the money comes in? No one will hire me if I am homeless…shoot no one is hiring me know. I have never in my life been homeless and I really do not want to put my 5 year old son in that situation. I even have a marketing degree! My husband is a skilled tradesmen and can not find work either. Please….all we need is one vote….does any of them have compassion?

Just to clarify, it’s Ben Nelson [D, NE] who has been voting against the extension. Bill Nelson [D, FL] has been voting in favor.

God help you I am so sorry! I am praying for us all since our wonderful public servants aren’t doing anything for us except “GOING ON VACATION!!!!”

GabeismyAngel 07/12/2010 1:45pm

This is DISGUSTING! How do these fucking people live with themselves knowing more and more Americans are going hungry and losing everything they have. Real smart way to improve our economy. I hope each and everyone of those bastards that voted no goes through their own personal hell where they too will be asking why. No wonder the rest of the world laughs at Americans. Fucking pigs

This has gotten way out of control. Wish there was a way we could cut off Congress payroll. I live in Texas, which happens to be a red state but I’ve seen more republicans switch over to democrats in the last six months than I have in my entire life. Voting out our senators, Barton and Hutchinson, in November will be a great accomplishment and progress for Texas.

As for the vacations, when does Congress actually work? Where do we go to vote on their salaries? Wish there was a way to eliminate lobbyist.

I am hoping for the best but already planning for the worst. I have no problem pitching my tent on the lawn in front of the capital in Washington DC, and when I get tossed out of my house, I am loading my bicycle up with my camping gear and me and the dog are going to make the trek. I’ll be looking for others to join me along the way. Hopefully by the time I get there my little parade could be 12 million strong! 12 million pissed off people get a lot more mileage than a roomful of fat ass lobbyists! HELL YEAH!

Freedom Works(TEA PARTY)andAmericansforProsperity are organization being used as Fronts and their Activist tap the fears of the “higher middle class” who are trying to protect their small businesses and wallets from being taxed. Protecting what they have worked hard to achieve. Americans (VOTERS) would do well not to be deceived by these organizations true mission: A COMMITMENT TO EDUCATING CITIZENS ABOUT ECONOMIC POLICY (Capitalism AT ITS UGLY, GREEDY WORSE) AND A RETURN OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO ITS CONSTITUTIONAL LIMIT (MEANING,DON’T TOUCH THEIR WEALTH) . The votes to watch are Sen. Olympia Snowe (R, ME) and Sen Susan Collins (R, ME). They actually had the guts to support the stand alone bill in the last vote, and I applaud them for that. It was the combination of Sen. Ben Nelson (D, NE) voting against it, and the missing vote from the late Sen. Robert Byrd (D, WV) that caused it not to pass. With the replacement appointment from Manchin, the bill should pass if nobody switches their vote, and the new senator votes in favor.

CONTINUED… BIG CORPORATIONS, SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS (BANKING/OIL INDUSTRIES), FEW EXTREMELY WEALTHY FAMILIES, AND GOP.
DOESN’T MAKE SENSE, THEY CREATED THE UNEMPLOYMENT, THEY HAVE AND ARE MAKING TONS OF PROFITS, BUT THEY DON’T WANT TO HELP PAY FOR IT.

+-Most big CORPORATIONS have made RECORD PROFITS this year by cutting jobs long-term. They started layoffs in 2007, and putting millions of Americans on unemployment.
+ -They created the business mantra of “DO MORE, WITH LESS”, causing today’s workforce to do more job responsibilities with no more pay. 55% American workforce are working reduced hours, reduction in pay, leave without pay, forced to take part-time to keep job.

I will add West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin’s and Senator Bill Nelson to my list of people I will NOT vote for even if they run for dog catcher. Thank you Joe Manchin for pushing this out just as far as you have been able to. I hope you enjoy unemployment sometime in your lifetime as well. You seem like a guy who like myself has worked hard your life but I wonder how you will feel when you have no income and no one offers you a job or extended unemployment benefits. It seems all of the politicians affecting our lives are hypocrites and deserve to join us on the unemployment roles!!!

Repubs only care about their own job preservation. Repubs are working hard to win November’s election with the help of Tea Party(FreedomWorks) and their BIG CONTRIBUTIONS FROM SPECIAL INTEREST Groups. Fore instance, Oil&Gas Industry Contribution 2009-2010 Koch Industries$724,300, Repubs86% & Dems14%. Also has made big contributions to FreedomWorks/Tea Party funder.
-FreedomWorks Org./TeaParty movement putting a great deal of pressure on Senators to not support UI Ext. with stimulus that would require corporations to help pay back through taxes.
DOESN’T MAKE SENSE, THEY CREATED THE UNEMPLOYMENT, THEY HAVE AND ARE MAKING TONS OF PROFITS, BUT THEY DON’T WANT TO HELP PAY FOR IT.

I Think it quite shameful and frankly immature on Manchin part to further stall an emergency situation such as this. I guess we can now conclude that the American government does beleive in torturing tactics in order to get answers. Perhaps its just a sick joke that’s being played on those of us suffering their tactics. When are the leaders in this nation going to truly grow-up, and handle their positions justly. Excuses are for children, who haven’t a care in the world not for the working class of this nation, who deserves immediate rectification on this score. In GOD We Trust.

Thanx JC

While you pray, make sure your feet are moving, as Ben Franklin said God helps those who help themselves. Times are tough, but remember when a man looses everything he has nothing to loose.Don`t give up YOU ARE NOT ALONE, we are in the MILLIONS, it`s time to get up, not give up!!!

UIAMERICAN 07/12/2010 4:37pm

Hungry, the power is getting turned off, phone will be cut off soon and the eviction notice has already been placed on my door. I guess we AMERICANS really do not matter to our Senators. I am ashamed of our government. I pray for them and I pray for US. It is hard to survive here in AMERICA the land of the free. I feel like a prisoner of our government. A victim of the recession…..Meanwhile they are getting ready for a month long holiday.

TravisNC you should be ashamed of yourself!!! You are the exact reason the senate does not want to pass the UC extension, let alone to have the nerve to come onto this blog and brag how your screwing the system! I hope you get caught you idiot. Good luck with all your new free cheese from welfare, you can make grilled cheese, cheese soup, cheese and crackers now that you have enough money to buy crackers, cheese balls because it takes a lot of balls to come onto this site and brag when there are so many families suffering, who cant eat, and who have no income, your an asshole for doing it, your an asshole for bragging about it, and your part of the reason people are suffering!! Think about it, you ass clown and sleep well tonight!!!

Blogger 07/12/2010 3:05pm

I went to Sen Cornyn’s Facebook page, and the comments there were overwhelmingly in favor of him voting for the unemployment extension. Being a Texan myself,I also left a comment telling him to vote for it. I’ll tell you right now that I’ll be devoting all my spare time campaigning for whoever his opponent is next time he’s up for reelection.

Thank goodness this place is sane. I cannot read the comments at the Huffington Post anymore. Every time they run a piece about unemployment, the “get a job you leech”, and “I’m tired of my taxes paying your welfare” crowd comes out in force. It makes me angry, but then I have to laugh at anyone who thinks their job is secure these days.

Well, the race is on to see if the UI extension will be passed before my savings run out at the end of this month. Good luck to all mu fellow unemployed people.

It’s a shame how ignorant Americans can be isn’t it? It’s because they lack knowledge. That is another game plan for Congress. To control what the people know so they can continue to do what they do. It is their fault why we’re in the economic crises we are in but look who is suffering, not them. Shouldn’t we be throwing them out by force by now>

spiker77 07/12/2010 2:24pm

hey all senators, 700 billion to bailout your buddies, we are the working class of america, we need a little help with stay alive, not getting ahead, just staying alive, they are coming to pick up my cpap and oxygen, as i can longer pay for it because everything else is gone, no more savings, no more 401k, selling off cars , you get the picture yet?? this is happening to millions of us , who are the backbone of this great place, ring a bell yet, the usa??, you make 6 figures, and take more vacations in a year than most of us get in our lifetime, but we still hope, pray , and help our neighbors, friends , kids, grandkids, and now you want to play games with the unemployment benefits,,!!!!!!!, just get the job done, it needs to pass the house and senate on july 13 , no more bs, just get it done , while some can still save their homes, and keep the power on, this is a bigger crisis than the gulf!!!!!

indimom2010 07/12/2010 5:14pm

rlaughli 07/12/2010 1:55pm

It will happen by the end of next week. It would happen today if dickhead Reid would just compromise with the Rep. Senator from Florida and pay for just half. He made that offer to Reid last week and Reid turned him down flat.
