Dems Will Have 60 Votes for Passing the Unemployment Extension Bill Next Week

July 12, 2010 - by Donny Shaw

Apparently West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin’s chat last night with election attorneys didn’t convince him to go ahead with appointing an interim replacement for Sen. Robert Byrd [D, WV] before the legislature in his state meets on Thursday. Here’s the latest on the situation, from the AP:

West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin says he’ll make a temporary appointment to the late Robert C. Byrd’s Senate seat by Sunday.

Manchin said Monday he could announce his pick as early as Friday.

That means this entire week will go by without any Senate work on the unemployment insurance extension bill unless Sen. Ben Nelson [D, NE] or another Republican changes their position on it. It does sound pretty certain that there will be a replacement for Byrd by the beginning of next week, but, in that case, even under the best-case scenario, it will take the Senate until the end of next week to get the bill to final passage. And then the process of implementing the extension in the 50 states begins…

On the bright side, when Congress does finally get the extension done and it is signed into law (most likely during the final week of July), the bill is will allow for benefits to be paid back retroactively to everyone who has been cut off since they expired on June 2nd. By the end of July, 3.2 million unemployed Americans will have had their benefits cut off prematurely due to the Senate stalemate.

go to change.org and sign petition for 99er’s unemployment extension. It is important to get more signatures….goal has not been met yet. Unemployed americans lets stand together and let our voices be heard. The media is not covering this so we have to stand together and do all that we can to get voices heard.

I sent an email to every senator that nay’d the legislation telling them they were not being good to the constituents that vote for them and basically karma will bite them in the end.

When they keep referring to June 2, and the benefits ending, my ceased on June 13. Would that mean I also would be entitled to retro pay?

  • ladbjangles 07/13/2010 2:33pm

If my benefits ended, on june 13 would I also be entitled to retro pay?

call your senators and speak your thoughts, you can get their info on this site. also email the white house …..just to voice your thoughts too…3 holidays they did this, and now stalling again. I WONDER WHO WILL DIE NEXT BEFORE THEY GET IT PASSED.

I hope they make a decision soon I have a job interview tomorrow afternoon, its a part time job but I’ll take what i can get right now. I ran out Memorial Day weekend and only received half of what I would normally get, usually things would roll through automatically to the next level but all was put on hold because the Senate couldn’t pass a bill that would help struggling Americans such as myself and the million other people that need help. I’ve been able to manage to survive barely but I have no idea how much longer I can hold out let alone the others that have nothing as well. I’ve lost everything and my spirit is nearly broke waiting on these clowns. Now we have a governor in W. VA that is holding all the unemployed hostage by our throats for his own personal agenda. All these people are doing is trying to commit genocide. They are no better than some of the warlords over the course of history have done

The picture in the article is actually the Governor putting a wreath on a
symbolic casket of the unemployed! They just want to bury us!

Anyone who votes against extended the unemployment benefits this time around needs to be voted out. Everyone needs to start calling, emailing,& writing the White House & their Congress Representative. The effects of having them continue to drag this bill to fail and then take their sacred week long vacation has already created a negative impact on the economy & if this continues we will reach the point to where the hole will be to deep to dig out.Sharon Angle who is running against Senator Reid does not live in reality, but on fantasy island as she believes that as long as people are getting unemployment then they will not look for work and she believes their are plenty of jobs out there & speaking as an Independent, she is fitting right in with the beliefs our current Republicans in Congress. The President never fixes an issue,he stirs the pot and moves onto something else, like the person who takes somethings apart, but does not put it back together rather goes to take apart something else

Folks! Empower ourselves! Time to move from Comments & calls to senators who view us as collateral damage TO focusing our energy on action – in the streets! In numbers that lamestream media can’t ignore. NO mention of EUC on Network News? OUTRAGEOUS! We may be broke & depressed but we’ve got to start making noise OUTSIDE of the internet. ACT-UP in the 80s re-defined activism, FORCED politicians to deal with AIDS, got drug companies/FDA to push treatments through. The sick were stigmatized then as we are today & most sheepAmericans still don’t care about anything unless it affects them directly. I search daily for signs of a March SOMEWHERE – I know DC is far away but People! Time to turn off the computers and get into the streets, even locally/multi-site, in numbers that CAN’T be ignored! THINK about it, Nov will be too late for many of us. Fewer AIDS folks made a louder roar than we millions, and they were DYING. A call to political action: ACT UP, FIGHT BACK, PASS 5618!! Now!!
