Dems Will Have 60 Votes for Passing the Unemployment Extension Bill Next Week

July 12, 2010 - by Donny Shaw

Apparently West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin’s chat last night with election attorneys didn’t convince him to go ahead with appointing an interim replacement for Sen. Robert Byrd [D, WV] before the legislature in his state meets on Thursday. Here’s the latest on the situation, from the AP:

West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin says he’ll make a temporary appointment to the late Robert C. Byrd’s Senate seat by Sunday.

Manchin said Monday he could announce his pick as early as Friday.

That means this entire week will go by without any Senate work on the unemployment insurance extension bill unless Sen. Ben Nelson [D, NE] or another Republican changes their position on it. It does sound pretty certain that there will be a replacement for Byrd by the beginning of next week, but, in that case, even under the best-case scenario, it will take the Senate until the end of next week to get the bill to final passage. And then the process of implementing the extension in the 50 states begins…

On the bright side, when Congress does finally get the extension done and it is signed into law (most likely during the final week of July), the bill is will allow for benefits to be paid back retroactively to everyone who has been cut off since they expired on June 2nd. By the end of July, 3.2 million unemployed Americans will have had their benefits cut off prematurely due to the Senate stalemate.

Not cool, Our rent was due 2 weeks ago and our land lord is running out of patients. So this means we are a week away from living in a tent for a couple of until the money comes in? No one will hire me if I am homeless…shoot no one is hiring me know. I have never in my life been homeless and I really do not want to put my 5 year old son in that situation. I even have a marketing degree! My husband is a skilled tradesmen and can not find work either. Please….all we need is one vote….does any of them have compassion?

U and the rest of the world….not to make light of your situation….but I have tons of bills and responsibilites too…I do not think anyone really cares (obviously) nothing has been done up to this point and I do not know if it is going to be resolved this month….

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I am thinking that it will not pass this month for the unemployment extension and that the subject may or may not be taken up in September some time for all of us “unemployed”….now I would love to be “WRONG”, but I am just not feeling very confident at all…..they are messing with peoples livelihood and congress does not have any “sense of urgency” and that concerns me….
They are also going on a long vacation in a couple of weeks and they are not moving very fast (in my mind) at all….do you feel confident in any thing they say? I do not! They have only proved for several weeks how we should not count on them!

I hear you nuspirits, My rent was due 2 weeks ago also. I have exhausted all my savings and my 401k while I have been unemployed. I spend about 6 hours a day researching firms looking for work anywhere I can get it. It just isn’t there. Our gov’t has failed again!! I will send out a special prayer for you and the rest of us unemployed that GOD my speak to the hearts of these elected officials and get them to realize what they are doing. GOD be with all of you!!

You can pretty much squat indefinitely in your apartment. it’s very hard to throw people out. Get the news involved.

  • maygo1959 07/12/2010 12:33pm

Does he think if he runs for this seat that the people will vote him in? He has to be crazy? Stop and think about all the
unemployed who are without benefits. That is quite a few votes
    he probably will not get.

I will never vote for Governor Joe Manchin for anything, not governor, not president, not dog catcher, not janitor!!! He has to be so careful to do this right so he can have his job as a senator I say put him in the unemployment roles with the rest of us!!!

The Republicans keep yelling they want to extend UI benefits but not borrow the money. What I want to know is why not ONE Republican or West VA Governor Joe Manchin or NV Senator Bill Nelson will find the money to fund extended UI benefits. The Republicans refuse to borrow any more money which is noble and I agree that but I don’t understand why they won’t do ANYTHING like stop the war in Iraq and Afghanistan in order to fund extended UI benefits?!!! I am starting to wonder if they’re real plan is to permanently stop the UI benefit extensions. If that is the case they should do it now and stop saying next week Gov Manchin!!! It’s always next week!!! Since the first of June you keep saying next week and next week never comes!!! I couldn’t be more disappointed in the whole lot of you. Playing politics with our lives and lying on top of that!!!

  • enrico17 07/12/2010 12:36pm

Who can believe a word this guy says (Manchin) he had changed his timeline so many times that he is not credible and like most politicans cannot be believed. And how do we know that the appointment will vote yes. Reid has to compromise but as the post said before it looks grim if it will make it before the recess. RECESS, Where is the President.

see excerpt from article where Senator wants to know what bills should be passed without pay/go

The good Senator has invited those who would go to his Facebook page to tell him what bills, if any, that the people of his state (and, by extension, the United States) would like for him to vote for, even if it increases the national deficit. Do so.

Contact Senator John Cornyn via his Facebook page.

Another week to wait for action on this bill the congress needs 60 votes. No action for 99ers and yet no jojs for people who are still lookin. I just wonder when will congress drop the gautlent and so no more I think that time is here so I just want to know what are people suppose to do. Jobs is the government reponsoble for employing those who cannot find work and does the government so the bank is closed and you and the family are on the street.

Are the 99ers going to be reconsidered or are we still going to be out of luck? Can they add this back in the bill or are we finished? When you’ve been searching like crazy for this long it is beyond depressing. Where do they think we are all going to go with no income whatsoever? At least it was some help. Medicaid, welfare, homeless shelters, food stamps, is that where they want us? It’s still government money. At least let us keep our pride. I’ve worked since I was old enough to get working papers.

    proudtobehiswife 07/12/2010 4:51pm

There are no bills in the works currently for extending unemployment past 99 weeks, and many senators have said it will not be addressed as 99 weeks is he farthest they have planned to extend it. I read an article about it recently, I will see if I can find it.

Thank You – I will continue to look and read if you should locate the information. When majority of folks are 99wkrs, I wonder what they plan to do with all of us. Because . . . . . unless something opens up soon for anyone, we’ll be these millions of 99ers still without jobs and no money

  • nuspirits 07/12/2010 12:51pm

I am so mad I am crying! Not just for my self but for the millions of people who are in the same situation that we are in. I do not wish this upon anyone. We want to work….there are just not enough jobs. We will even take a job digging ditches if need be. PLEASE STOP PLAYING POLITICS! This is not a “possible scenario” that your analyst say may happen…it is happening now to one out of every ten people. So start implementing something…..ANYTHING!

It seems to me that congress is not really worried about the millions of people without unemployment benefits. As long as their pockets are being overly stuffed, but the one’s who are voting against this bill, which is posted, some of which will be in our shoes come November.

Contact Gov. Manchin here and tell him how you feel (especially if you’re a WV voter!):

  • eavina30 07/12/2010 12:57pm

Write, call, fight, They are up for re-election in November here is the list that voted no
We can’t give up, share your stories, they can’t ignore us forever

  • comments5647 07/12/2010 12:59pm

Enrico17…I emailed Senator Cornyn and asked him the same thing I have asked here and that is PLEASE find the money either within the budget! We all know if it were to their benefit they would do exactly that and like I said I emailed Senator Cornyn and Senator Hutchison on this issue. At least Senator Cornyn’s responded. Senator Hutchison never even acknowledged receipt of my email. There you have it. They have been contacted and still refuse to help us. I won’t waste any more time on them other than to vote them out of office but thank you for letting me know he is asking for contacts.

I live in Pa. Today I just got my letter from the Labor and Industry Board telling me my tier 2 extension would expire on June 5th, 2010. Today is July 12th, 2010. When they do pass the extension I cant wait to see how long it takes to get my letter telling me I can move onto tier 3. I am guessing I will see that letter sometime at the end Aug or beginning of Sept. A holes. On another note I am happy to see the Senate piss away a hole day voting on the nomination of a District Judge for Illinois!! While the rest of us are loosing everything we have!! What a bunch of ass clowns.

  • RealityCheck82 07/12/2010 1:02pm

These stuffed-shirt assholes are obviously too tied up in their own circle jerk to give a shit about all of us Americans that are hanging on by a thread. They know the situation is dire…and that people are losing everything….the truth is they just straight up don’t give a fuck. As long as their pockets are lined and they can stand in the spotlight, there’s no need for sympathy toward degenerate non-workers

  • RobinDarling 07/12/2010 1:09pm

RealityCheck82 – Please start with politician homes…Anyone else may be unemployed and planning to sell their stuff for $$.

  • Comm_reply
    nuspirits 07/12/2010 3:33pm

That is exactly what we are doing…selling our stuff. The only things we will have left is my computer (which may go too, no electricity…no computer) some fold out chairs, our TV, clothes, my 5 year old son’s books and a few toys, and our mattresses. If we loose our home….then the TV and mattresses get sold too. What we had before the economy went to poop in our government’s hand basket (sorry, I am Texan)is a home, new car, a savings, credit (no debt), pretty much living the “American Dream”…you know work hard for what you get. But apparently all those years of taxes we paid are going unnoticed.
