Dems Will Have 60 Votes for Passing the Unemployment Extension Bill Next Week

July 12, 2010 - by Donny Shaw

Apparently West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin’s chat last night with election attorneys didn’t convince him to go ahead with appointing an interim replacement for Sen. Robert Byrd [D, WV] before the legislature in his state meets on Thursday. Here’s the latest on the situation, from the AP:

West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin says he’ll make a temporary appointment to the late Robert C. Byrd’s Senate seat by Sunday.

Manchin said Monday he could announce his pick as early as Friday.

That means this entire week will go by without any Senate work on the unemployment insurance extension bill unless Sen. Ben Nelson [D, NE] or another Republican changes their position on it. It does sound pretty certain that there will be a replacement for Byrd by the beginning of next week, but, in that case, even under the best-case scenario, it will take the Senate until the end of next week to get the bill to final passage. And then the process of implementing the extension in the 50 states begins…

On the bright side, when Congress does finally get the extension done and it is signed into law (most likely during the final week of July), the bill is will allow for benefits to be paid back retroactively to everyone who has been cut off since they expired on June 2nd. By the end of July, 3.2 million unemployed Americans will have had their benefits cut off prematurely due to the Senate stalemate.

The news does not care, I have written to all of my local channels as well as all of my senators… They do not CARE. We pay them 70,000 to 109,000 a year… They think we are content making 200 a week and are being spoiled. They have it backwards…….

I am hoping for the best but already planning for the worst. I have no problem pitching my tent on the lawn in front of the capital in Washington DC, and when I get tossed out of my house, I am loading my bicycle up with my camping gear and me and the dog are going to make the trek. I’ll be looking for others to join me along the way. Hopefully by the time I get there my little parade could be 12 million strong! 12 million pissed off people get a lot more mileage than a roomful of fat ass lobbyists! HELL YEAH!

I’m all the way out in California so it will be a looooong bike ride, but I’m with you. I’m about a week away from eviction anyway so what do I have to lose?

I went to Sen Cornyn’s Facebook page, and the comments there were overwhelmingly in favor of him voting for the unemployment extension. Being a Texan myself,I also left a comment telling him to vote for it. I’ll tell you right now that I’ll be devoting all my spare time campaigning for whoever his opponent is next time he’s up for reelection.

Thank goodness this place is sane. I cannot read the comments at the Huffington Post anymore. Every time they run a piece about unemployment, the “get a job you leech”, and “I’m tired of my taxes paying your welfare” crowd comes out in force. It makes me angry, but then I have to laugh at anyone who thinks their job is secure these days.

Well, the race is on to see if the UI extension will be passed before my savings run out at the end of this month. Good luck to all mu fellow unemployed people.

It’s a shame how ignorant Americans can be isn’t it? It’s because they lack knowledge. That is another game plan for Congress. To control what the people know so they can continue to do what they do. It is their fault why we’re in the economic crises we are in but look who is suffering, not them. Shouldn’t we be throwing them out by force by now>

minortimes: I know! I, and many others, have tried to point out the facts to them ; 1)We are getting unemployment because we USED TO have jobs, 2) There are 6 applicants for every job opening. I’ve stopped replying to them because after a while you realize you can’t get into a battle of wits with an unarmed man. I had posted that my employer and I had paid into UI for years, and I was simply getting my money back. Plus, I owe almost $1000 in taxes on UI I’ve collected so far. A man replied, “Boo,hoo. Get off the government teat!” I replied that I would get off the government’s teat if they will get off of mine. Wars, corporate bailouts, tax cuts for the wealthy. The average American is beginning to look like a dried-out victims of the soul-sucking vampires in the movie Life Force.

But hey, if you all want to vent some rage, go reply to those types over at HuffPo. Quite entertaining.

EVERYONE who reads this website and who is fed up with this nonsense you be spending 20 minutes a day out of their time e-mailing and calling ALL of the senators who said no and give them a peice of their mind. One thing that we have that they have shown they don’t is a backbone and heart. So lets start the warfare

I watched CSPAN all day today or should I say from 2:00 pm EST when they showed back up to work, until they adjourned at 5:45 pm EST. It was god dam amazing!! They did nothing all day, most of the people on at the bench looked like they were falling asleep, and they voted one district judge in Illonis? WTF!!! The only one who did anything today was Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio. He stood up and reamed the Senate out about not passing the UC extension. I have watched this guy for weeks and he truly is trying to help the unemployed!! He chewed the republicans asses out today! and for that he gets an ada boy from me. I to am unemployed and waiting for the extension, I am not in much better shape than most of you here, I went to a church today to a friends funeral and said a prayer for all of you while I was there.

Funny thing happened today! I applied for welfare on the 23rd. Guess what. I got it! I will get 180.00 more than I was receiving from unemployment plus all rent paid and plenty of food in the refridg…God Bless America and the Great State of North Carolina…I suggest everyone on this forum to apply. It’s a no brainier? I have pride but I give up! It’s about my family now and not pride..Thank you Senator Burr for waking me up. Because my wife has a mediocre job and I’m unemployed they gave us a better deal than these dumbass Senators! YOU WIN!!! On top of that I don’t even have to look for a job as long my wife keeps her minimal job! This is great…America at its best! of course i have side jobs and make alot of non taxable income but who cares…I win!!!!!!

TravisNC you should be ashamed of yourself!!! You are the exact reason the senate does not want to pass the UC extension, let alone to have the nerve to come onto this blog and brag how your screwing the system! I hope you get caught you idiot. Good luck with all your new free cheese from welfare, you can make grilled cheese, cheese soup, cheese and crackers now that you have enough money to buy crackers, cheese balls because it takes a lot of balls to come onto this site and brag when there are so many families suffering, who cant eat, and who have no income, your an asshole for doing it, your an asshole for bragging about it, and your part of the reason people are suffering!! Think about it, you ass clown and sleep well tonight!!!

    Listen jakj1,
At least he’s not robbing some old lady or out there busting up some young college student for a few dollars. He’s was in the same boat with us. He has to take care of his family too. If I wasn’t so proud, I would have gone to the Welfare last week like I planned. It’s going to be a long hot summer. People are going to be beaten for less than that. I am ready to get down with an armored truck – for real!

  • charulata 07/12/2010 4:28pm

I am so sick and tired of congress playing with our lives what the hell is wrong with everyone in Washington. i am so sick of worrying and crying everynight i’m not even sleeping anymore. somebody needs to put a quick end to this madness we are losing everything. WHY CANT THEY SEE THIS WE ALL NEED OUR CHECKS AND NOW>

  • indimom2010 07/12/2010 4:35pm

TravisNC that hurts the people who are really trying . To say you are getting welfare and taking non taxable side jobs. Most people are really trying and I am not saying you were not but to say you are taking side non taxable income is not right. That is what gives people a bad name. It also is not right that they have not passed the extensions.

Hungry, the power is getting turned off, phone will be cut off soon and the eviction notice has already been placed on my door. I guess we AMERICANS really do not matter to our Senators. I am ashamed of our government. I pray for them and I pray for US. It is hard to survive here in AMERICA the land of the free. I feel like a prisoner of our government. A victim of the recession…..Meanwhile they are getting ready for a month long holiday.

While you pray, make sure your feet are moving, as Ben Franklin said God helps those who help themselves. Times are tough, but remember when a man looses everything he has nothing to loose.Don`t give up YOU ARE NOT ALONE, we are in the MILLIONS, it`s time to get up, not give up!!!

No he may not be robbing some old lady for busting up some college student, but he is taking advantage of the system and bragging about it. He notes that his wife is working yet they are still eligible for welfare, he brags that as long as his wife keeps her minimal job they get welfare, and he does jobs on the side that he does not claim to welfare? How is that not cheating the system? He clearly notes that he doesnt even have to look for a job because he getst welfare now. Read his post again, slowly and tell me again what to read into it. I am not picking on him, if he has it so good then he should not be braging about it hear. I have been following these posts for over a month and he is the only one I have seen brag about screwing the system! Good luck with your armored truck, I think you have more common sense not to come onto a blog and brag you just knocked off an armored truck, thats all I am saying.

I have been doing that for weeks now and everytime I send them and email a few days later I get an email back from the White House talking about something completly different than the email I sent them. You will get a form email back from them, one that they push a button and it goes out to thousands of people. I sent them an email about the delay in passing the EU extension and I got and email back about the oil spill in the gulf! I sent an email about the Senate going on vacation without passing a EU extension and I got an email back thanking me for being concerned about Yellowstone National Park?

  • jakj1 07/12/2010 4:40pm

  • Smalltownhoss 07/12/2010 4:44pm

I feel this whole process, and suffering we’ve went through is a problem and should not be tolerated. Where we have say and control of the situation is by who we vote/ELECT in office. This is not our fault, but we must not vote for people based on there feelings on one subject that tickles our fancies. We have to look at who did us wrong in our time of need. I dedicated this facebook account to bringing light to those who’ve been voting no, to us paying our bills. ONE THING FOR SURE IS THERES NOT ENOUGH JOBS FOR EVERYONE. And our economy was getting better till Washington started playing there usual control and leverage games. And we are the one to suffer.
Two ways to find this facebook…..
    1) Facebook People search POLITICAL BETRAYAL

Yes it is just horrible …what they are doing to the unemployed. It’s not like we are not trying. They need to wake up and understand what needs to be done…PLEASE SIGN THE EXTENSION. THEY HELP PEOPLE IN OTHER COUNTRIES AND FORGET THE PEOPLE HERE IN OUR OWN COUNTRY./…….VERY VERY SAD!!!!!!

  • UIAMERICAN 07/12/2010 4:57pm

We should freeze all of congresses pay till they resolve this issue. No time off and no pay… Let them walk in our shoes just to see how hard it is..
