Dems Will Have 60 Votes for Passing the Unemployment Extension Bill Next Week

July 12, 2010 - by Donny Shaw

Apparently West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin’s chat last night with election attorneys didn’t convince him to go ahead with appointing an interim replacement for Sen. Robert Byrd [D, WV] before the legislature in his state meets on Thursday. Here’s the latest on the situation, from the AP:

West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin says he’ll make a temporary appointment to the late Robert C. Byrd’s Senate seat by Sunday.

Manchin said Monday he could announce his pick as early as Friday.

That means this entire week will go by without any Senate work on the unemployment insurance extension bill unless Sen. Ben Nelson [D, NE] or another Republican changes their position on it. It does sound pretty certain that there will be a replacement for Byrd by the beginning of next week, but, in that case, even under the best-case scenario, it will take the Senate until the end of next week to get the bill to final passage. And then the process of implementing the extension in the 50 states begins…

On the bright side, when Congress does finally get the extension done and it is signed into law (most likely during the final week of July), the bill is will allow for benefits to be paid back retroactively to everyone who has been cut off since they expired on June 2nd. By the end of July, 3.2 million unemployed Americans will have had their benefits cut off prematurely due to the Senate stalemate.

Hey, it is not just the Republicans though I do agree they are most at fault. Now we have a Governor wanting to play God. NOTHING GIVES THESE PEOPLE THE RIGHT TO PLAY WITH OUR LIVES!!! THEY ARE ALL SOB’S.

Governer Machin (West Virginia) like most Americans. He wants to preserve the job he has(Politician), and advance his career. He is probably making decisions by listening to political power and money. Does anyone really think he or any of the SENATORS who have stood in the way of passing Unemployment Insurance Extension to the millions who need it, are losing any sleep?

The worse SENATORS are the ones who are LINE THEIR POCKETS big time right now by being the one vote or joining the filibusters that completely blocks UI Ext Bills from passing. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

The MILLIONS of Americans that have been forced into unemployment lines may not have much money, or even empathy from other fellow employed Americans at this point, but you have the power of your vote in November. Take names, and make sure you make it into the voting booth.

  • lifelongtexan_14 07/13/2010 5:59am

This goes to show just how the republicans are heartless and rather just play politics, while millions of americans such as myself are suffering!! I’ve never taken much action with voting, but this November, I’m going to enourage EVERY person I know to vote for ALL democrats.

What they are doing by screwing around is causing many people to lose everything they have WORKED so hard to build for themselves. I have a wife that is 5 months pregnant, and our electrcity is about to be shut off due to Congress not promptly taken action to pass H.R. 4213. I’m disgusted and outraged with the republicans and Senator Nelson(D) voting against this. You areinconsiderate and should be ashamed with yourselves.

And now we have to wait another week until the West Virginia governor chooses a replacement for the late Senator Byrd?!?! Riddiculous.

How are we supposed to survive? We can’t even look for jobs with no home to live and no income to help us get to potential job interviews.

Wells fargo will lay-off some 4000 employees most of them in my city. I really don’t understand how we are going to get out of this mess. The government is completely detached from reality and private businesses are taking advantage of the situations. The same firm I worked for that laid off 70 people won a 360 million dollar project. They have not hired one single person back. They are working the ones that are left 60+ hours because they know that the people who are left are afraid to complain.

Everyone, I would like to propose that we all gather up in our areas plan a date and time and protest. I live in New York and I want to organize and protest event infront of Wall St. Anyone living in the new york area and would like to contact me my e-mail is wethepeopledemandchange@yahoo.com People from other areas please contact me too. We will notify all media and we will protest at the same times and days to show that we’re together and we’re not letting corporate america try to kill us anymore. This is a serious event that I am trying to plan. As I said, I would like us all to protest in all of our areas at the same times and days. We will contact all news and media channels in our areas so that everyone in America can see that we’re coming together because it doesn’t matter what state we live in or what party we belong to. We’re still Americans and we’re still human. We need to do something now!

I REALLY DO AGREE, BUT I HAVE BEEN THINKING, I KNOW ADANGEROUS THING FOR ME TO DO. WE HAVE BEEN GOING ABOUT THIS ALL THE WRONG WAY. WHAT ARE THEY STALLING ABOUT??? MONEY TO COVER THE EXTENSIONS RIGHT? WELL HOW ABOUT A HUGE LAWSUIT AGAINST ALL THE BANKS THAT GOT US HERE IN THE FIRST PLACE. WE CANT SUE THE GOVERMENT BUT NOTHING AGAINST THE BANKS. IF THEY CAN PAY BONUSES AGAIN I THINK THEY SHOULD PICK UP THE UNEMPLOYMENT AND JOBS TO RESTORE AMERICA. IT IS ONLY FAIR. WHY SHOULD THE AMERICAN PEOPLE PAY HIGHER TAXES, SUFFER ON UNEMPLOYMENT,LOSE OUR HOUSES, BY THE WAY ARE GOING BACK TO THE BANKS,GO WITHOUT FOOD,AND LOSE OUR RESPECT DUE TO NO FAULT OF OUR OWN. THE BANKS ARE MAKING TONS OF MONEY ALREADY. WHY ARE THEY GETTING OF TOTALLY FREE AND WHY ISNT OUR GOVERMENT AND ALL THEIR WISDOM, AND I SAY THIS LOOSELY, GOING AFTER THEM FOR THE MONEY TO COVER UNEMPLOYMENT. LET ME KNOW AMERICA IM READY TO FIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Smalltownhoss 07/13/2010 6:14am

Well, we are stuck behind a rock and a hard place. There’s not enough to jobs to go around, and this is proven. The republican’s and ONE DEMOCRAT Ben Nelson of Nebraska don’t care if we die, and can’t feed our families. Washington is playing there games and these people need to be replaced come voting time.

Yes we are stuck and the job market is less than slim. But I think there was more than 1 dem that voted no on passing ui ext and some rep voted yes

  • beenblue 07/13/2010 6:40am

Please help me to understand something.. Manchin has to pick a temporary replacement, for a position he stated he wants to take when election time comes. This has to be difficult, think about it.. try picking your own adversary. Can the problem really be that ridiculous?

  • firestorm145 07/13/2010 6:49am

Ok Americans, this is ridiculous. Lets fight bgack now before its too late. People are losing everything and this governor is sitting on his butt as well as obama. The president can push for this as an emergency right away. Call, wwrite do whatever it takes to get this done this week. We need help!!!! Stand up and keep fighting for what you believe.

Sorry for the stupid questions, but what are we supposed to believe in? this is like a ship without a compass, and how the hell do you organize the homeless? and can the homeless vote without an address? Try coming back up the ladder from homeless, this is what Washington has or has not figured out. What will they do with us then?

  • sruthj217 07/13/2010 7:01am

This should be the exact same bill as two weeks ago, which had 59 votes YES. With Manchins replacement they should have 60 votes.
The Democrats I assume want to pass this. So at this point it would pass next week.
The only danger is 1) somebody else dies or 2) the Democrats change the bill and add things so more people vote against it.

  • trynghard63 07/13/2010 7:03am

What more can we do? Ive called and written everyone. They do not care! Most of us can not even afford gas now to go to a job interview even if we are lucky enough to have one. They cut our throats and are now sitting back while we slowly die! I guess they are amused at all of our pleas for help. I use to think our president cared, but he is sitting back and doing nothing to help get this thing pushed through. so tell me… what more can we do? The longer this thing goes on the more angry I get at all of our politians! By golly when they wanted the health care bill passed they MADE SURE everything was done to see it happen.

  • sruthj217 07/13/2010 7:05am

I get the feeling when they finally do vote on this it will be agonizingly slow.
Be prepared for another televised hi-stress ordeal!

Another stupid question, when Clinton wanted his budget figured out didn`t he make them stay in their seats until they did? and is this any different?

  • Jonapoo4u 07/13/2010 7:38am

i understand that harry reid doesnt have the congress votes to get the UI passed but honestly america is in turmoil over it YOU WOULD THINK it would be top priority right now and not wildlife and the toiletpaper acts of 2010 and how many pens buissness’s are allowed reid could be hashing this stuff out with the republicants

  • trynghard63 07/13/2010 7:47am

Everyone see’s we are not a priority to these people. Haiti is getting money hand over fist while Americans are loosing everything! Im sorry if I offend anyone but Obama could be doing something to help push this along! Are they waiting to see how many of us get to the point of no return and kill ourselves? What are they truly waiting for? 1 more week is going to really do so many of us in. Im sitting here thinking that so many people are going to get desparate and at least in jail you have a roof over your head and food.

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/07/12/jon-kyl-extend-bush-tax-c_n_642862.html

This article proves what we’ve known all along. S. Kyl, the Republican Minority Whip out and out says to extend tax credits for the rich—EVEN IF IT ADDS TO THE DEFICIT!!! Yet he and his cronies are using the deficit argument in their attempts to not extend unemployment insurance. I expect some hypocrisy in politics, but this is a blatant slap to the face.

If I were wealthy, I would expect to pay more taxes. That’s just the way the cookie crumbles. In fact I would happily pay them as it shows I’ve got so much money, it doesn’t matter (ahhh, must be nice) and it is my belief we take care of each other, no matter your party or socioeconomics.

Kyl is delusional and needs medication.

where will the money come from? how about this:
the mint in denver runs 24/7. in one day it produces about 3 million quarters. thats $750,000. in one week thats $5,250,000. over the year it adds up to $273,000,000. thats over a quarter BILLION dollars. and thats just quarters folks. no pennies, nickels, dimes, or bills included. we dont need to FIND the money, we produce it at a rate that is almost unheard of. now here is the kicker, it goes to BANKS daily. those same ones we bailed out. we (read gov’t) can afford to help the unemployed but are too stupid to do any propper accounting.
personally ive lived in a tent and homeless shelter while waiting for my UI to kick in, and im not ready to do that again. if the military wont have me (my last option), i would like to volunteer for the going postal in congress position.

How`s this for an idea, let us move into the foreclosed homes the banks have taken, and since the representatives don`t mind giving them money, pay them to let us watch their stuff!!!!

  • downandout 07/13/2010 8:36am

I am one of the unemployed with no benefits since 6/5. Now,I am terribly ill and have to make the decision not to go to doctor because of no money for co-pay even though i am using a “county” hospital. I have to eat and try to find a job, but it may not matter in the long run. I imagine a lot of people have this same problem, especially the parents of small children. NO ONE has the right to treat us like this. America has become a third world nation in terms of treatment of it’s most vulnerable-the children. All you Senators of BOTH parties, may you rot in hell.

  • beenblue 07/13/2010 8:38am

HOWS THIS FOR AN IDEA, PUT US IN THE FORECLOSED HOMES THE BANKS HAVE TAKEN, AND SINCE THESE A-HOLES LOVE GIVING THE BANKS MONEY ….. PAY THEM TO LET US WATCH THEIR STUFF.!!!

I’m there too. I have $200 to my name and a daughter trying to get through nursing school. We’ve been selling our plasma for gas and grocery money. I’ve been gainfully employeed for 37 years then unemployed for this last year. I did hear that Al-Qaeda and some other fringe groups are looking for some help. Uhoh I guess I just bought myself a cell in a fed center….3 squares a day though and a cot rent free. Hope they dont waterboard me.

Beenblue, I can drive a truck! When can I start….sounds like a short term job though. Its all good though. I’ll do anything to stay away from the handout I paid into for the last 36+ years (UEI). Where did all that money go? Went to Taco Bell today to apply…they looked at me like I had 2 heads. 52 yrs. old and wants to work for TB. Probably wont hear from them.
