Dems Will Have 60 Votes for Passing the Unemployment Extension Bill Next Week

July 12, 2010 - by Donny Shaw

Apparently West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin’s chat last night with election attorneys didn’t convince him to go ahead with appointing an interim replacement for Sen. Robert Byrd [D, WV] before the legislature in his state meets on Thursday. Here’s the latest on the situation, from the AP:

West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin says he’ll make a temporary appointment to the late Robert C. Byrd’s Senate seat by Sunday.

Manchin said Monday he could announce his pick as early as Friday.

That means this entire week will go by without any Senate work on the unemployment insurance extension bill unless Sen. Ben Nelson [D, NE] or another Republican changes their position on it. It does sound pretty certain that there will be a replacement for Byrd by the beginning of next week, but, in that case, even under the best-case scenario, it will take the Senate until the end of next week to get the bill to final passage. And then the process of implementing the extension in the 50 states begins…

On the bright side, when Congress does finally get the extension done and it is signed into law (most likely during the final week of July), the bill is will allow for benefits to be paid back retroactively to everyone who has been cut off since they expired on June 2nd. By the end of July, 3.2 million unemployed Americans will have had their benefits cut off prematurely due to the Senate stalemate.

well sen. brown is helping now on another bill hr5297 (small business) so maybe just maybe brown will help sen snowe and collins with the unemployment to capitilize on the 60 vote philbuster block. there’s gotta be money there to be made. so brown if not for us, do it for yourself ,either way it still helps the millions in need.

Here’s the problem – a lot of them feel safe. They are not all up for re-election this Nov. Lugar, for example is not up until 2012 and he hasn’t announced that he intends to run.

  • Jonapoo4u 07/13/2010 12:29pm

  • Rose2010 07/13/2010 12:33pm

Because of the failing of the Senate to pass the Emergency Unemployment Act of 2010, how many of you are being forced in to Banckruptcy??? Raise you hands…I would rather be working paying my bills…but why should the Senate care, they have jobs…Hopefully a few will get removed and soon…

  • theunemployed 07/13/2010 12:39pm

just pay attention to everything going on while looking for jobs not there and remember thats what they want, everyone to forget but dont let that happen they need to pay for their actions.down with the no voters and ben nelson (not bill nelson)lol that poor guy is gonna get heat just for havin the same last name.but ben need punched in that big fat ugly sausage he calls a nose.lookin like gonso.

obama kinna reminds me of if dave chappell was president not the race part but in the manner he does things

  • cralford 07/13/2010 1:11pm

I think it is time to contact your Senators. Thank those that stood up for the American people. They deserve to hear our appreciation.

Let those that voted against the the extension know your personal story. A form letter is better than no letter but they need to know the plight of the unemployed.

I know many of us would rather vent in our letter but like it or not we really need to convince one or two of the previous no votes into a vote for the people. I am willing to beg right now.

  • widget02us 07/13/2010 1:25pm

Senator Stabenow is talking about it right now!

  • widget02us 07/13/2010 1:29pm

    I love her!

  • DonnaCane 07/13/2010 1:32pm

CSpan – White House spokesman Gibbs was talking about unemployment until he got a reporter question re: oil spill. The media is treating the unemployment issue as a non-issue. Maybe we should all be firing off massive emails and calls to all the networks, CNN, etc.

Plus the Senate just quickly and efficiently passed Fin Reform bill – imagine that!

Sorry – wrong bill. Was actually watching a house bill passing.

  • shyningglory28 07/13/2010 1:41pm

Great… So I will just keep telling my five kids they can eat next month. I’ve worked my whole adult life sometimes 2 and 3 jobs and yet the government acts like we are all just sitting here waiting for a handout. Tell me if they had to wait even a day for money to eat a meal would they keep handing out these excuses? Its not just the Republican people. The democrats refuse to use money from other resources and compromise. Sure the Democrats are trying to look like the good guys and blame the Republicans but they are all the same monster. The Democrats just hide their monster under sheeps clothing better.

  • widget02us 07/13/2010 1:45pm

I was watching SEN. Debbie Stabenow(MI) on CSPAN2, she asked if they could vote on it tonight or tomorrow and asked for another republican vote (a request falling on deaf ears) but that is something we can only fantasize about.

Donny Shaw, thank you for all of your efforts in keeping us informed. It is very difficult to get a straight answer from anybody…particularly our Senators and Representatives. You are a very trustworthy source and I completely value your opinion and insight. You do a great service to those of us who are unemployed and in need of information. God bless you!

  • firestorm145 07/13/2010 1:54pm

    To Donny Shaw:

Just keep up the good work of keeping us informed about everything

  • widget02us 07/13/2010 1:57pm

I agree. Thank you Mr. Shaw!
