Reid Sets Tentative Unemployment Extension Vote for Tuesday

July 14, 2010 - by Donny Shaw

Politico reports:

Reid told reporters Wednesday that West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin has promised to name an interim replacement for the late Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.) this weekend. The new senator, combined with pledges from Republican Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe of Maine to support the revised unemployment bill, would give the majority leader the filibuster-proof 60 votes that he needs to begin moving it to President Barack Obama’s desk.

“If Governor Manchin does what he has indicated to me he will and we’ll have a new senator to replace Senator Byrd, then we’ll vote Tuesday morning sometime on the unemployment extension,” Reid said.

As I reported last night, Majority Leader Harry Reid [D, NV] could have pushed for this to happen faster. He could have rushed the swearing-in of Sen. Robert Byrd’s [D, WV] interim replacement and kept the Senate in session over the weekend to get this done. Instead, he’ll adjourn the Senate on Friday and maybe take up the bill on Tuesday.

what have I done that has made you so upset with me? It was a joke. I normally dont respond to people that go off on me,but I believe you are being a bit unfair. I dont know your story and I am not going to get into mine. I just bet it is very similiar. I dont do drugs and go shopping w/my money. One thing I do agree with you on is that YES! I would go cry to my Mommy if she was still around. I refuse to let this situation or people bring me down. I get thru tuff times with my sense of humor and my trust in God that things will turn around. Why is it only me, that you have come at? Anyway, I hope your day gets better and you chose your name wisely

Its not only you. People don’t need to be sarcastic in this time of need!!!!! You were being that way, so I thought I would be too. To me your attitude was not good for the unemployed people. Yes , everybody is frustrated and people have made worse remarks that I did to you. So sorry if I offended but this needed to be said. Please no sarcasm, people are losing everything and going hungry!!!!

firestorm145-That was really uncalled for! Pammy was responding to the members of congress who feel that everybody who gets UI benefits are addicted to drugs and just want a handout. You need to shut up! That was so rude! Everybody is frustrated right now, but don’t take it out on Pammy!

You read one other post where I was speaking to Mr Shaw where I did not agree with how he laid out his article. I was not offensive, it was an opinion. That was the first and only post that I have made on this site. I cant believe I keep getting pulled back into this high school behaviour. I’m done, with you and your silly comments. I apologize to all that have had to endure this.

Someone I just talked to said they saw on the news today that after 5618 passes it is only going to reinstate unemployment and not backpay for the weeks they waited and hashed out Gov. Manchins successor.
Is this true??! what about people who have house payments/mortgages and utilities. I am so much in debt now already.
Surely that has to be an evil rumour started to torture us, I’ve been filing all this time with my job search records.

    firestorm145 07/14/2010 11:14am

The bill goes retroactive if you kept filing. I have filed for 4 weeks so far and they said to keep filing so when and if it goes through I would get all the backpay that I filed for

My unemployment requires me to apply at at least 5 places per week and fax them proof. So no rich Republicans, don’t get your suits bunched I’m not lying around collecting my starvation rations. Or in this case, not.
I’m also working a temp job for about 1/3 what I used to make but I have no idea how long that will last, it could be weeks.
People who haven’t been laid off in this recession have NO CLUE WHAT IS GOING ON and how hard it is to find jobs.
Especially if you are older, or have been out of work for awhile. You compete for very few spots when they come open and it gets harder each time.

Hr 5618 does include retroactive pay. I believe it does not include the additional $25 that the stimulous pkg gave us

Hey, I have an idea, Congress.
How about passing the Unemployment Extension? That might stimulate the economy a little. Then JP Morgan Chase’s stock portfolios can look rosier.

I believe the delay is that they do not want much news coverage on this. To do a weekend session would draw too much attention to their failure to slowly act. And by waiting next week, will miss the Sunday news programs cycle.

It’s pathetic. There has been more coverage on Palin’s daughter’s engagement than our plight.

If they would pass this bill, I guarantee JP Morgan Cahses portfolio would look better. They hold the note on my car loan. Or maybe my car, this time next week the CEO could have a little Yaris in their driveway.

  • sruthj217 07/14/2010 11:13am

notstupid, I’ll be happy to take your job if you feel all of this is unfair.
you can take my place! ;)-

  • dennypccc1 07/14/2010 11:20am

As long as you certify your claim, you should be paid all amounts owed since the time they stop paying. My state said they have all the due funds ready to be disbursed as soon as the bill is signed for all back pay. So keep writing to Mr. Ried and urge, beg him to get this done over the weekend, so Monday we can pay our bills.

Well I called Mr. Reid office, asking why can’t he call an emergency meeting on saturday? His assistant told me Reid can not make them stay ! I’m confused I thoiught he had that power ! So I told his assistant that I will be bringing my 3 kids to his office so they can go home with him for the weekend, at least they will have a decent meal, lights and a roof over their heads, soon after that he HUNG UP ON ME ! WOW this is the support we get from our GOVERMENT !

I have been unable to file vouchers since my unemployment ran out, on June 13. I have called the office three times, and have been unable to get any answers. So you believe that I will receive monies from then, to present? Will I have to go back and complete the vouchers, that previously had’nt been there?

  • dwcstmdznr 07/14/2010 11:21am

It does no good to get upset with Reid. He needs 60 votes for cloture so it would do no good at allto call for a vote, say today.I can understand that he needs to wait till next week. Don’t like it but understand it. If you want to get mad at someone look to the gov of West Va for waiying to appoint an interim senator

ladbjangles: I just spoke to an EDD rep, and he said you can go to EDD’s website, go to “ask EDD”, an email a request for continuation forms. That way you will be covered retroactively whene the bill passes. Hope this helps.

  • Emeliz 07/14/2010 11:21am

I agree with FA2010-why worry about the unborn children when kids TODAY are impacted and suffering? The Repubs are cold hearted and seem to think we don’t see that about them. Unfortunately, this issue does not get enough sympathetic support from the public; fundamentally they don’t want to see people getting money without working. It does not seem moral. We just seem invisible to everyone; government and businesses. My sis in law finally saw the light when her son could not find a job anywhere at any fast food business or other low paying job this summer. She was shocked that they wanted resumes for 16 year old school kids, and even so, no openings. I think the media has done a pretty good job with the talking heads and speaking out aginst the Republican vote on this bill. Above all, the Lord is good, put your faith and hope in Him, He sees our struggle and also those Repubs. Some heavenly butt kicking may be on its way for their arrogance. Lord have mercy and give them a heart!
