The Week Ahead in Congress

July 18, 2010 - by Donny Shaw

The big item on the agenda this week will be the unemployment extension bill that’s been stuck in the Senate for the past month and a half. Sen. Robert Byrd’s [D, WV] interim replacement, Carte Goodwin, is going to be sworn-in to the Senate on Tuesday at 2:15, and immediately afterwards, he will vote with 57 other Democrats plus Republicans Snowe and Collins in favor of “cloture,” which will end the filibuster and allow the bill to move forward towards final passage.

As I explained Friday, after they pass cloture, the Senate will still have to take one more vote on the bill (within 30 hours of passing cloture) before they can send it over to the House of Representatives for the final vote before it is sent to Obama for his signature. As you’ll see in the schedule below, the House is already anticipating having the bill sent over to them from the Senate sometime this week. This whole thing should be wrapped up by the end of the week. In the meantime, when they’re not working on the unemployment bill, both chambers will be voting on all kinds of other stuff, like small business loans, safer oil drilling technology, and helping Haitian orphans. Take a look for yourself below.

First, the House schedule:

MONDAY, JULY 19, 2010

Regarding California, when you all are saying “claims” your meaning time cards right? Our claim is already filed and we are just stuck in limbo until this bill passes and is signed. Once the bill is signed by the president, then EDD will send out our time cards for all the past weeks, so we can then recieve our checks. Correct?

Yes it is true. 268,000 unemployed Californians are on a extension waiting list. Our respective tier extension ran out in June. We received notice that we would receive claim forms if the bill is passed. No approval for the next tier was granted; ergo, no claim forms. If you received approval you are in a different boat. California ran out of money for the extensions and has to borrow money from the federal government; this can only happen if the bill is passed.

although I doubt the Senate will start the vote until the Obama press conference is over. Can’t steal TV time from the Annointed One.

Yes it is true. If your extension ended, no claim forms were sent out. They are waiting for the passing of the bill before they send out claim forms.

And it’s not just in Congress! It starts at your local level. That’s where they start! If they can’t get it right on the small scale, what makes you think they can do ANY better in a higher position??!! Yet they keep getting voted back in because people are too damned lazy to check into what they’ve been up to. Sad and sickening.

So here we are today. Now Obama is suddenly speaking up…may I remind you that the presidency is the coveted title all these politicians hope to get??!! As if you should believe the president because he said so…UGH! Break out your chess board and think.

I hope through all of this, people have opened their eyes to what their government has turned into. This isn’t a party thing NOR a recent thing. It does exist though and it will continue to fester as long as the sheep (US citizens) keep following blindly. Just keep following that little club of power driven, manipulative, deceitful monsters straight to the ugly end. May God have mercy on us all.

starfishncoffee 07/19/2010 6:38pm

I have to say that my heart breaks everytime I see a post blaming one party or the other. If you are in the mindset of blaming by party, then you are duped, distracted and truly need to step back and see the big picture through someone else’s glasses. You are being played like a violin.

This is NOT a party thing! This IS a disgusting, blatant display of the REAL people that have been elected to supposedly SERVE the public. They ALL play political chess ALL the time. It’s a power hungry machine that has gotten too big for itself because of the common citizen’s complacency and ignorance.

How many of you will be checking in daily to see what Congress is up to AFTER this whole thing is settled and you have your checks coming in again?! You don’t have to post your answer…just think and answer honestly to yourself. Every day that goes by and they are not being watched closely, they are like unminded children. Out of control and up to no good, doing things they KNOW are NOT right.

computerwerks 07/19/2010 6:13pm

I think congress being overwhelmed with all of this that week is a understatement

Reid is trying to get the best bill passed. I know we are all desperate right
now. This has gone on far too long. We need to look at the big picture.
If FMAP is passed it will help 300,000 people keep their jobs, and think how
it will help the States and Local government if this is passed. How many jobs
could that save? I think if they try to separate the two they won’t get the
other passed and then they will just add that many more to the unemployed.

Chin up desperatentexas the sun will rise in the morning and we all get another chance to start again. It’s funny how that works that way every day. Try not to be too down… I could start telling you some really serious stories that might make yours seem a little less desperate but I’m trying to cheer you up here not make you feel further desperation. Hey we are in this together and we are all feeling the pinch together.

Same method as in California. Once the extensions are passed the claim forms are sent out.

OnlyinAmerica 07/19/2010 5:34pm
in reply to dlharris1189 Jul 19, 2010 2:21pm

Wrong. In California you cannot file claims unless you receive a claim form. The Unemployment Office will send out the forms to be filled out retroactively as soon as they receive word the extensions have been granted. Retro payments are then paid. This is the way it works in California. This is the way they have been doing it for years. Everyone potentially eligible for the payments is on a list. We received in writing that if the extensions are approved the claim forms will be sent out. We will receive the retro payments.

Watch The Obama Deception documentary at Youtube you will understand that it is both the Democrats and the Republicans who are completely at fault here. This is exactly what they want all of us to be focused on the WRONG ISSUE! Blaming each other’s camps divide and conquer the oldest game in the book!!! Watch The Obama Deception you will be amazed!!! Again I have nothing to do with the producers nor do I benefit from recommending this documentary in any way it just will answer everyone’s questions on the economy and unemployment and why our congress is dragging their feet.

You should be able to. Contact your unemployment office and don’t feel guilty asking you were unemployed by no fault of your own or you wouldn’t have gotten unemployment to begin with. Quit feeling guilty and call them.

I am sure they are “heartless orges”. They went out of vacation three times since all of this started and voted themselves raises this year!!! That in and of itself would have financed a great deal of this unemployment extension but they are all too self centered to worry about our crashed economy and unemployed!

I’d be happy to explain it but in an effort to keep this post short I suggest you go to Youtube and do a search for the documentary The Obama Deception, although I think it would be better titled the Democrat Republican Deception or the Obama Bush Deception anyway this documentary should shed some light on the explanation of why congress Democrats and Republicans alike have done what they have done. And no I do not work for or have any financial interest in this documentary nor do I have any financial interest in the producers of this documentary it is just that it offers a good explanation of what happens when you let foreign banksters run the money of your country. It is worth viewing.

indimom2010 07/19/2010 3:32pm

Thank You Kerlynne. I know on Indiana it just ask how much you earned for the week it does not ask for hours. I really am grateful I finally found a job. But the retro sure would help for what I have lost. Thank You so much

Kerlynne 07/19/2010 3:15pm
in reply to indimom2010 Jul 19, 2010 2:33pm

indimom2010>> you will file the hours you worked. However since you didn’t work for those weeks that you didn’t get paid you will file for those like you didn’t have a job and will get those retroactively up to when you got your job. Here in WA. you can file for unemployment if you are on it even if are working as long as it is less then 40hrs and meets the matrix of unemployment to paid work hours.

Did that help?

indimom2010 07/19/2010 2:33pm

Ok now I know this is probally a really silly question. I did receive a job last week…I worked 18 hours last week . This week will be close to 40 hrs probally 38 or 39 hrs this week. Will I be able to file to get my retro pay for the weeks I lost? Please don’t get me wrong I am very thankful after 16 months to finally have a job….just curious for the lost weeks .

in reply to OnlyinAmerica Jul 19, 2010 11:27am

That is true, every state has different methods for filing claims BUT regardless of how ur state has u submit the claim, whether it is in person or via web, u still have to submit ur claims to receive payment. U can not receive retro payments unless u were filing ur claims.

OnlyinAmerica 07/19/2010 2:10pm
in reply to seanurse Jul 19, 2010 1:50pm

Thats OK. It is rough on all of us. California plans to change to a more modern system by the end of this year. In California we currently have to fill out a claim form every two weeks and wait up to ten days after sending it in to receive a check. The Unemployment office will not send out any claim forms to be filed just in case Congress passes an extension. Once an extension is passed the mailings start a few days later. The crazy part is they will then only send out one claim form at a time for a two week period until you catch up with the cycle.
