July 22, 2010 - by Moshe Bildner

Two major pieces of legislation moved forward yesterday, as the President signed the financial regulation bill H.R. 4173, and the Senate passed an unemployment insurance extension H.R. 4213, by a vote of 59-39.  Here’s what’s going on in Congress:

President Barack Obama's signature on a bill

  • Democrats in the Senate finally broke a Republican filibuster and proceeded to pass H.R. 4213, a fourth unemployment insurance extension; the bill still must be voted on by the House and signed by the President before it becomes law.  (Christian Science Monitor)
  • Testifying to Congress, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke called the economic outlook “unusually uncertain”, and announced that the Fed would keep in place all financial stabilization measures it has taken since the 2008 financial crisis. (CNN)
  • President Obama signed into law sweeping new financial regulations in H.R. 4173, ending a quest that had begun as early as 2007.  Minority Leader Rep. John Boehner (R, OH-8) attacked the bill, offering his now-standard call to repeal the new legislation.  (AP)
  • Congressional Democrats are divided over proposals for new energy legislation; liberal members are pushing to enact a comprehensive energy and climate change bill, while more conservative members, worried that a large energy bill cannot get through congress before the November elections, are urging Congress to consider smaller piecemeal energy reforms.  (Politico.com)
  • Feeling pressure from its Gulf oil spill, BP increased its spending on lobbyists to $1.7 million this quarter. (Bloomberg)
  • The Congressional Tea Party Caucus was officially launched Wednesday by a group of Republicans led by Rep. Michele Bachmann (R, MN-6). (Washington Post)
  • The “Miscellaneous Tariff” bill passed the House easily, despite earlier opposition from Republicans.  (Associated Press)

DOES ANYBODY KNOW IF YOU ARE STILL COLLECTING UNEMPLOYMENT NOW HOW ARE THEY GETTING THE EXTRA 25 A WEEK IF IT WAS STOPPED AND IF SO THEN WHY SHOULDN,T WE GET THE EXTRA 25 ON OUR BACK PAY ONLY ? IM CONFUSED AS NORMAL. IF YOU KNOW THE ANSWERS PLEASE HELP. THANKS ALSO WHY ARE NONE OF THESE NEWS STATIONS COVERING THIS BILL. WE NEED TO CHANGE THAT SOON.

The $25 extra payment ended around June 1st with all Federal Benefits. This new bill does NOT include the extra $25 and you won’t be seeing it in your retroactive payments.

Much like extra tiers or more weeks, it ain’t happening and is NOT likely to happen unless there is a major change of power and brains in Congress.

TAH, I KNOW ALL THAT . THE PEOPLE ON REGULAR 26 WEEKS AND TIER 1 NOW ARE STILL GETTING THE 25 IN THERI CURRENT CHECKS. I WAS WONDERING WHY THEY WERE STILL GETTING THE EXTRA 25 IF ITS FEDERALLY FUNDED.WHY DIDNT IT STOP IN JUNE WITH ALL THE OTHER STIMULUS ON UNEMPLOYMENT?

How do YOU know what people in your state are getting at State & Tier 1 benefits unless YOU or someone in YOUR family is getting the extra $25? Benefits are calculated on the amounts paid in on your behalf and the length of time you worked. Trying to figure out what you think people are being paid is an exercise in frustration. And it’s really none of your business. If someone is getting extra money that is not due to them, you can be sure that the FEDS will catch up to them sooner or later.

Secondly, typing in all caps is like shouting in a public venue. It’s rude and quite disconcerting.

DEAR TAH, I WILL CONTINUE TO TYPE IN ALL CAPS IF I FEEL LIKE IT. IT’S MY RIGHT. UNFORTUNATLY MY COMPUTER KEYS ARE STUCK. SO SORRY IM OFFENDING YOUR UPITITY ASS. WHO DIED AND MADE YOU GOD. I DO KNOW SOMEONE WHO IS STILL GETTING THE EXTRA 25. THE QUESTION WAS IS IT PART OF THE SAME FEDERAL THAT THE REST OF THE TIERS WERE FROM. IF YOU DONT KNOW THE RIGHT ANSWER AND CAN’T GET THERE WITHOUT INSULTING PEOPLE THEN GO TO ANOTHER BLOG. I’VE BEEN HERE SINCE DAY ONE FIGHTING FOR 99ERS EVEN BEFORE THE SENATE STAND OFF. SO HAVE A GREAT BLESSED DAY. YOU REALLY NEED IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SEANURSE>>> IF YOU WERE ON AN EXTENSION BY THE STATE OR REGULAR UNEMPLOYMENT YOU WILL CONTINUE TO GET THE EXTRA $25 A WEEK TILL IT IS DONE. THIS BILL THAT WAS PASSED TOOK AWAY THAT $25 A WEEK PLUS COBRA RIGHTS AND FEW OTHER THINGS. NOW WE NEED TO ATTACH THE TIER 5 AND MAKE IT FOR AT LEAST 20 WEEKS AND GET OUR STIUMULUS BACK!!!

  • jkbrink 07/22/2010 10:30am

I read on another board that for those of us in Tennessee it could take 2 weeks.

    Kerlynne 07/22/2010 6:19pm

Sassyamerican>>> in my state (WA) they are saying that payment will be good till May 2011. To me it would make sense that it would stop in November. And yeah… it is going to happen allll over again in November. WE can’t wait around. We need to organize and make our voices heard. Tier 5, make the bill last for a year, give us our weekly stimulus back.

  • college_bum 07/22/2010 11:30am

I just heard the great news, the bill past. But we all should remember this shouldn’t have ever happened. We were given a deadline; though some of us bet the deadline our check were still put on a temporary stop. Again, this shouldn’t of ever happen.
Instead of debating on if we should get our unemployment back they should have been figuring out what to do with all the 99ers out there, because there are more than there should be. I am not a 99er and if I’m lucky I won’t be, but I know how they feel. Day in and day out, all you do is look for work and keep failing. And going to college or having some special skills doesn’t increase your chances any. For I graduated college and failed on finding work.
This problem needs to be fix now! our you’ll have alot of homelss families and college grads.

  • college_bum 07/22/2010 11:37am

If this is a sign of lazy Americans I guess it is . . . too lazy to fix the economic problem. The Americans that get paid to deal with the unfortunate recession, they (the politicians) would rather go on vacation or look at an easier mishap they can fix. Rather than observe the big issues, they avoid the major problems.

  • ExGOP 07/22/2010 11:50am

TO ALL MY FELLOW UNEMPLOYED AMERICANS … LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD AND DON’T STOP FIGHTING FOR YOUR RIGHTS ONCE YOU RECEIVE YOUR CHECKS.

PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION AT THE FOLLOWING WEBSITE:
    http://uspoverty.change.org/petitions/view/the_99ers_need_a_tier_v_added_to_unemployment_benefits

THIS COULD BE YOU! ECONOMISTS PREDICT JOBS WILL NOT BE BACK BY NOV. 30TH! THEY’RE TALKING ABOUT A SMALL PICKUP IN 2012, BUT EVEN THEN THIS COUNTRY WILL PROBABLY NOT BE ABLE TO CREATE 15 MILLION JOBS BY THEN. IN OTHER WORDS, ANY RECOVERY WILL BE SLOW. LET’S START NOW TO HELP AVOID THE CRAP WE ARE CURRENTLY GOING THROUGH.

P.S. PLEASE FORWARD THE PETITION LINK TO FRIENDS AND FAMILY MEMBERS TO SIGN. WE STILL NEED 11,000+ SIGNATURES TO REACH THE 50,000 GOAL.

Hi everyone! Does anyone know how long it will take the state of Alabama to directly deposit the money into my bank account? I’m still claiming every week online & mailed in the document showing I’m looking for work every month regarding the HEB Program(High Extended Benefits). I know the Bill has passed finally & we’re just waiting on the President to sign it into law & I’m absolutely thrilled. I hope & pray it only takes a couple of days to send out Alabama’s retroactive payments into our bank accounts & onto our debit cards. If anyone knows anything regarding the system in Alabama or has any information about when we will get our money, I would greatly appreciate it & many thanks in advance. Brooke:)

  • Brooklyyn 07/22/2010 12:56pm

By the way, I have signed the petition to approve a Tier 5 for the 99’ers & I am still emailing my local State Representatives & Senators as well as all of them across the board in Congress to approve a long term unemployment extension beyond November, to create a Tier 5, to stop outsourcing, & to create more jobs for us that will pay comfortably, so we don’t have to keep suffering & struggling like we are now bc most importantly, we DESERVE it! I will continue praying for all of us & our current unfortunate situations. Stay strong, keep your head held high & continue to let your voice be heard! We will prevail! Love to all. Brooke:)

Congress Passes and President Signs Unemployment Extension (Updated for the week of July 19, 2010)
Legislation was approved by Congress on July 22, 2010 extending eligibility deadlines for benefit extensions to November 28, 2010. Please continue to claim weekly benefits in the usual manner, unless you have received instructions to file a new claim. Claimants whose benefits had stopped because they were not able to begin receiving EUC by the week ending June 6, 2010, or were not able to move to a new Tier of EUC or collect Extended Benefits starting on the week ending June 13, 2010, will receive payment in their account by the middle of next week for back weeks claimed.

  • shyningglory28 07/22/2010 1:45pm

I have a question if someone could answer it. The following is posted by AZUI on the arizona unemployment website " The U.S. Congress has passed and the President has signed legislation that will extend the Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) and Extended Benefit (EB) programs. As soon as DES receives information on when the new law will be effective, we will begin working on restarting these programs. Continue to file your weekly claims" umm doesnt the law become effective the second the president signs it??

YES. Some uninformed intern printed that up.

  • mom2304 07/22/2010 1:57pm

Thank you Jesus that this has finally been passed & from how it looks already signed! I must be honest though & say that until I actually receive money I am worried that Louisiana UI will find some way around paying benefits even though I have only completed Tier 2. They haven’t updated there website in 2 days. What a suprise!WellmaybeI’m being a little impatient. Anyway I will push on & do my best to keep the faith knowing that when I am weak He is strong.

This was not the great recession it is the 2nd Great Depression. I just wish most of these politicians would get off their ideological soapboxes and starting working for this country and the American citizens. We still have to keep the pressure on for the 99ers.
