Rep. Berkley Tells 99ers to Keep Waiting

September 23, 2010 - by Donny Shaw

Finally, something like a real update for all the 99ers and unemployed exhaustees out there. Unfortunately, it’s not very good. Via Arthur Delaney at HuffPo:

Rep. Shelley Berkley [D, NV] has introduced legislation (H.R. 6091) to help the “99ers” — people who haven’t found work after exhausting all 99 weeks of unemployment benefits available in some states — but her first priority is preserving those 99 weeks.

“For people that have not exhausted their 99 weeks, the latest extension of unemployment bennies will come due at the end of November. That to me is first and foremost,” said the Nevada Democrat in an interview with HuffPost. “Then I would like to see another tier created, which is what my bill does.”

Berkley’s bill would give the unemployed an additional 20 weeks of benefits in states where the unemployment rate is above 10 percent. Nevada’s unemployment rate is 14.4 percent — highest in the nation.

So, no action on a fifth tier until the current level of federal benefits is extended. The current benefits are set to expire on November 30, and if the history so far of the 111th Congress tells us anything, it could easily take them well beyond the expiration date to get an extension bill passed. If Congress doesn’t get out in front on this, we could easily be looking at debate of an extension of the current benefits lasting through most of the lame-duck session and pushing 99er legislation up against the adjournment date.

Berkley seems to understand the issue. “There’s some sort of misconception here that if somehow you don’t extend unemployment benefits, that poor people are going to disappear. They don’t. They end up on welfare, they end up on food stamps, they end up homeless and they end up desperate, so the idea that they’ll just go away is ludicrous,” she told Delaney. Of course, this is especially true for the long-term unemployed who have exhausted all their benefits without managing to find a job. The longer you’re unemployed, the fewer resources you have to work with and the harder it become to find a job. In past economic crisises, the recovery reabsorbed this part of the work force. But that’s not happening this time and a lot of economist don’t see it happening any time soon.

Why wait to take on this? The House is way ahead legislatively, so if Berkley and the Dems are serious about addressing a tier V, they should do it now.

If it wasn’t for Harry Reid and Nancy P I would have lost my house, I cant believe that anyone is giving him a run for his money. The guy came through, it was a fight but they came through, and I’m sure they would do it again if they had a little help.

Republicans admit knowing that there are no jobs but in the same breath proclaim that unemployed Americans should just go find jobs. Intelligent? NO Educated? NO Republicans keep coming up with illogical “solutions” that aren’t solutions. I write Republicans all the time and suggest to them that if they truly believe that unemployed Americans can find things (jobs) that are not there they should demonstrate how it’s done. I suggest that they find something that does not exist – such a unicorn. I tell them to spend the day looking for a living, breathing unicorn and during their search take no income and eat make-believe food. If, at the end of the day, they have not found a unicorn and STILL believe it is possible to find one REPEAT the experiment each day until they are able to comprehend that something that does not exist cannot be found. This is step one-problem identification. Once they do this – THEN, they are ready for step 2- logical resolution.

There is actually someone in Congress that understands that there are no jobs! When there is a job opening because of death, etc. it goes to a family member of the business who has lost their job, not someone like me looking for a job.

Re: Bill H 6091, is the unemployment rate in any given state have to be over 7.5% or 10%? The explanation of the bill has always read 7.5% and yet I’m reading 10% on your update today. I’m two years, two months out of work and my unemployment ended the end of June. Savings dwindling, will have to sell my house, cannot afford my property taxes and I’m over 60 years old. I’ve worked since the day I could get working papers. I never expected this nightmare after working all my life. Appreciate knowing the correct information regarding this bill. Thank you.

you are confusing 6091 with 3706, 3706 is for state at or above 7.5%

bugsy166 09/24/2010 6:42am

WE 99ers MUST vote in order to make sure and get RID of the senators that opposed the Tier V……..so dont listen to anybody that says NOT to VOTE!
It make more sense to ACUALLY VOTE this way YOU ASSURE that a certain canditate doesnt win!!!…..BUT if you do nothing at all than you have ABSULUTELY NO CONTROL AT ALL. It must of been some STUPID pollock who came up with the NO VOTE IDEA!!!

beenblue 09/24/2010 4:07pm

I WOULD FRENCH KISS A RATTLE SNAKE, BEFORE I WOULD VOTE REPUBLICAN !!! I MAY HAVE LOST MY JOB, BUT I HAVE NOT LOST MY MIND….

beenblue 09/24/2010 4:56pm

WHEN OUR BENEFITS EXPIRED LAST JUNE WHO WENT TO BAT FOR US ?? IT SURE WAS`NT THE REPUBLICANS, OR THE TEA PARTY MEMBERS, THEY WERE TO BUSY TRYING TO KILL ANYTHING THAT LOOKED LIKE CHANGE—— HERE`S THE WAY THEY VOTED NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO,NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, HERES THE WAY THEY VOTE NOW NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO,
I THINK IT`S PRETTY OBVIOUS WHO`S STALLING THE RECOVERY SO OBAMA LOOKS LIKE AN INEPT PRESIDENT, AND THE HOUSE AND SENATE HAVE BEEN CRIPPLED, BY STALLING AND FILIBUSTERING. THE REPUBLICANS HAVE NOT SHARED IN THE RECOVERY OF THIS NATION, OR IT`S PEOPLE, THEY ONLY SPREAD HATE AND FEAR, AND THATS ALL THEY DO, AND THEY DO IT WELL WITH THE HELP OF THEIR PROPAGANDA MACHINE FOX NEWS " ALL HATE ALL FEAR ALL THE TIME 24/7 "

TheDutchess 09/25/2010 6:33am

You know, it’s really amazing that after coming off a summer of filibustering by the Republicans, that some of you still got it twisted. Get rid of Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi? People, how we seem to forget that if it wasn’t for them trying to get the bennies through, we would have gotten nothing, if it were up to the Republicans’ John Bonehead, oh I’m sorry, I meant Boehner, we would have been without the entire summer. I have hit my 99 weeks and have been without for a few weeks. Thank God that my husband found a good paying job. We would have lost our house like so many others. So, you think the solution is to vote out Harry Reid? This problem didn’t manifest overnight and it’s not going to get fixed overnight. Just because he’s not voting on the 99 weeks does not mean that he should lose his seat. Cont’d…..

TheDutchess 09/25/2010 6:42am

So, Reid will lose his seat to a tea party supporter, Sharon Angle? Really? Have you all lost your minds? I guess you all don’t have any kids, cause God forbid your daughter gets raped by some nasty AIDS ravished lunatic. She’s gonna have to keep the baby, you know, make lemonade out of lemons. Have you forgotten all the nasty comments Angle has said about the unemployed? We are lazy, and spoiled. She said that she wouldn’t have even voted for the unemployment extension. That’s who you want in office? Then you can forget about getting any additional benefits because she is not going to let that get through. She’s gonna say screw all of you and get on welfare – No extensions because you are just lazy! Read your newspapers. I don’t even live in Nevada and I know how screwed up she is. Please, don’t let that happen. I’m sure Reid has a plan.

So, you think voting Harry Reid out will get you closer to the fifth tier? You think Sharron Angle is going to vote for the fifth tier when if she was in office, she would have voted against any and all extensions? What you need to do is focus on keeping him in office. I think he has to make sure that he will be able to pass another bill without it getting filibustered 100 times. That’s the problem. Once the democrats are able to maintain and even get more seats, then it will be easier for a fifth tier to get through without any hold-ups. The ones that should be voted out are all the Republicans. They were the ones that stopped the process at every juncture. Remember that? Don’t be fooled. Yes, the Democrats are a sorry group, but at least they tried to get us the money that we worked for. If the Republicans get their way, you won’t have to worry about getting Tier 5 because most of them believe if they just ignore us,we will go away, which is not true.

TheDutchess 09/25/2010 7:12am

What should be happening is that the concentration should be on getting all the Republicans out of office that voted against the Unemployment Extension over the summer. Remember that? They had expired and the Republicans voted against it every step of the way. And that one lone Democrat that sided with the the Republicans; He should be voted out as well. Unemployment benefits are not a privilege, it’s an American right. Senator Ben Nelson of Nebraska was the only Democrat that voted against the Unemployment benefits. He should be voted out of office. And he is probably likely to vote against the 5th tier as well. As for those that think the Tea Party is a better solution, think again. Those nuts are not going to change things because they are mad…

Abaratarrr 09/25/2010 11:16am

Harry Reid is the only reason there is no Tier 5, harry reid refuses to allow or a vote that will help us, replacing harry Reid for someone else that will not help us does not hurt us in the least. It does prove to other politicians that we are one issue voters and will fore anyone that does not help us regardless of party.

If harry reid does not end his filibuster against 3706 the unemployment extension he will be fired. If you do not want harry reid to loose his job contact him and ask him to stop his filibuster against 3706, remind him that his job depends on it.

Remind him that in his own state of Nevada that there are more unemployed then there are independent voters. This year the unemployed will decide who runs this country.

He has ignored us since February, If he does not vote for us before the election we will not vote for him.

Kerlynne 09/25/2010 2:50pm

Soooo here we are again, waiting wondering what is going to happen to us. Finally I see in print that SOMEONE gets it!! We aren’t going to go anywhere, expcept to become homeless, desperate enough to … what? steal? and go on food stamps. But our system is set up to only serve the the desperate and homeless. We have to be that way before we can get food stamps etc. I tried to get medical help but make too much!!! on unemployment!! I would have to give up my home the mere $80 a month I spend on food so I can get some medical coverage. I don’t know if going on to a tier V is what we need more then just getting jobs back. Now they say all those people that got jobs because of the stimulus money are going to loose their jobs because there money is going to disappear. They took the stimulas money away when they voted to extend unemployment payment. Why can they keep the stimulus money and those of us that aren’t employed can’t. I guess they are better then us? I am so tired.

eavina30 09/26/2010 6:44am

I feel like the Republicans want to extend bush tax cuts in order to get the uncertainty out of the country. Wasn’t that the policies that got us in this mess in the first place. Corporate business owners are venture capitalist there are outsourcing to save a buck. Do you really think there are going to hire Americans if the can hire someone over seas for probably less than minimum wage! The Republicans want to spend money on border security, I’m all for border control but in a time were the economy is the number one issue don’t you think that should be the back burner. Let’s be real Mexicans are not terrorist. Why aren’t they scapegoating Canadians…, Racial profiling is the reason why we cannot move forward as a country, I guess we feel a culture shock when something other than the norm is confronted. I personally don’t want to pick strawberry’s in 1000 degree weather. Republicans want to money launder Campaign tax money through Wars and National disasters. Regulate and Audit!

that is to bad for the people currently in office because if they do not vote for us before the election we will not vote for them.

Harry Ried just lost this election, Nevada’s unemployment rate is over 14% yet he continues his filibuster against 3706 the unemployment extension.

Harry Reid of Nevada is the reason that there has been not vote for 3706 in the senate and that is why he is going to loose the election.

Everyone that is unemployed or that cares about the unemployed needs to change their party affiliation to independent tomorrow, that will show them that we are paying attention and that we will use our vote.

Changing your affiliation is easy and free you can do it online in most states in a matter of minutes, The political parties monitor voter registration daily.

there are more unemployed people in Nevada then there are independent voters, we get to decide this election.
