99ers Crisis About to Get Much Worse

December 14, 2010 - by Donny Shaw

I’ve been trying to make the point that the 99er problem — people exhausting all unemployment benefits without finding a job — is about to get much worse because we’re approaching 99 weeks from the brunt of the recession unemployment spike. Congress is not planning to add more weeks of unemployment benefits and the Federal Reserve is projecting the unemployment rate to stay pretty much where it is for the next year. Putting it all together, this means that for the foreseeable future, there will no jobs and no government support for the millions of 99ers.

This graph from Calculated Risk showing three years of job losses makes it very clear — millions of people who lost their jobs in the deepest part of the recession are about to be dropped off a cliff:

Adding insult to injury, 99ers are not even tracked by the government. The way the employment statistics system works, when people go off of unemployment, they are not considered part of the work force and not factored into the numbers for employed or unemployed. This is why we have no firm number of 99ers, and why it’s so easy for policymakers to ignore this crisis.

Expect homelessness, the suicide rate, and despeartion-related crimes to spike. And remember to look at this when the consumer recovery doesn’t turn out as rosy as expected over the next couple years.

Unfortunately, Unemployment does not provide the lavish lifestyle that is enviable by all of the working class. UNEMPLOYED people barely meet THEIR basic needs with unemployment. For most, that does not include medical benefits. It means partial rent, food, gasoline to get to interviews, and a mobile phone to get the numerous calls from potential employers during this depression/recession. ITS NOT A PRETTY PICTURE and I wish EVERY PERSON DENYING BENEFITS for the 99ers, or unsympathetic, WOULD BE FORCED TO LIVE ON UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS BASED ON THEIR SALARIES, FOR 2 YEARS. I had a very nice job at a law firm in January 2009, when I got laid off. I have 25 years experience as a corporate legal secretary, working in the best firms in Los Angeles. I apply for jobs online and registered with 13 legal agencies. Most people will take any job IF THERE WERE JOBS.

We owe China Billions of dollars. Give billions in add to foreign countries. We are falling apart as a nation. Real politics can make or break a nation. A house divide can’t stand. We have to get back to a United States of America that is where our strength lies. In war we seem at first to be united then when the hard times come everybody wants to bail out and blame someone else for the bad results. We need to quit being double minded on a host of issues. What would we do if North Korea sunk one of our submarines? What would we do if china pulled their navy off the cost of California? What would we do Cuba launched a missile? What would we do if our citizens we being blown up by suicide bombers, Like in Israel? I know what we would do the towers fell and we have been in war for nine years over that issue. Economical strength is your military strength. If South Korea gets into a fight with North Korea we will be in the war too. But we tell everybody what to put up with.

Is Mike Huckabee suggesting part of my idea?
http://www.rantrave.com/Rant/Huckabee-Offers-a-Tier-5-Unemployment-Extension-Solution.aspx
BUT….
Is there enough community hours for 8 – 16 million people every week to do 16 hours each?
How many hours a week does that total with 16 million people?
Who is going to TRACK these hours?
What if someone gets HURT on the job?
Who decides who gets the free community hours the same guy that is getting those rich tax breaks too?
Shouldn’t finding the new job be priority one?
What should be a part of a Tier 5 and what should not ?

I am one of the 99er’s and the end is almost here. I am a 58 year old Vetran who has worked hard all my life. All my savings are gone, I am about to loose my home, and no one wants to hire a 58year old guy. I am screwed. But all the rich politicians don’t care about people like me. This will be the worst Christmas I have ever had. Wall street caused this problem and the Govt bailed them out, who is going to bail people like me out? I guess I’ll be living in my car and begging for food before too much longer. But then again maybe the end will come before too much longer. Thanks Washington.

spayne 12/16/2010 2:58pm

I will never give up! We have to think positive! I am a full-time student in college and a 99er. My family and I don’t even have a Christmas tree much less presents! Without a tier 5 we are going to loose everything. I have barely fed my family for the past 3 months and now I am strapped for cash. Our government is f**cked up! they sit in there buisness suites acting like they relate to us poor people. That is BULLS**T! Now I have spoken my mind. I am a surviver and I will pray until the ship sinks which I will never let it! Lets all think positive together and prey and maybe we can get something going. Our energy together can make a difference! Now I have spoke my mind!

Donny Shaw makes good predictions. On Dec. 14th, he wrote, “Expect homelessness, the suicide rate, and desperation-related crimes to spike.” Unfortunately, a Florida school board got caught off guard. See for yourself how one fellow reacted when his wife lost her job as a school teacher and their benefits ran out… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQjQOlJvMzE&feature=player_embedded

futa is used for administration costs not benefits, it pays the salaries and water bills at the unemployment offices.

Abaratarrr 12/15/2010 5:52pm

get ready Washington, this is just the tip of the ice burg, people are desperate and have nothing to loose, please provide more weeks of benefits for the long term unemployed. This bill does not help the long term unemployed, Obama lied to the nation when he said that the bill extends unemployment for 13 months, the bill just extends the deadline to sign up for the current benefits, it provides no new weeks, this is why this man is dead.

This is an interview with the wife of the 99er in Florida who’s life ended too soon. I hope that she will be OK

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPsMKXlB4eQ

Contact Nancy Pelosi today (202) 225-4965 or AmericanVoices@mail.house.gov, more benefits for the long term unemployed is entirely up to her at this point, let her know that the 13 month extension proposed by Obama does nothing for the long term unemployed.

um i am a 99er and i was fighting for the extensions to pass i was even contacted by Debbie Stabenow for my story to take to the house to get the Americans want to work act going (which includes a tier five) I had 3 responses because of a limit on characters basically saying myself like so many others in the us are going to lose everything and up here in these areas where it’s colder it will be a lot harder for everyone. I eve suggested people like myself that are going to college and can verify it should have unlimited unemployment till we get done, and tie it in with the fafsa, and no worker left behind programs to prevent scammers…. no worker left behind requires growing professions, and fafsa requires attendence records from the colleges and almost contintious schooling or the payments stop (you can take summers off and just barely stay in the guidelines to not make payments)

@Checkless: You are right but its not going to happen because of the selfishness and greed that reigns supreme in this country. If ALL of the unemployed had been in sinc and fighting for UI extensions mos ago for ALL of the unemployed then it would have happened but the HR 4213 recently unemployed disappeared after the bill was passed and came back boo hooing once again. 99ers GOD BLESS YOU! I hope they call sleep well at night knowing they got a limited UI extension and will get a rude-awakening in January. It was wrong what they did because they didn’t fight for the 99ers and some will say they did and SOME did but MOST did not.

@cszalai: Magnify your ME ME ME reply about 1.5 Million times and we see why those recently unemployed who benefited from HR 4213 2 times, didn’t fight to help the 99ers when they needed it earlier this year and again a few mos ago. As you said selfishly it all about ME ME ME and let the bodies fall. You are one of those folks that would cut the baby in half and I hope your conscience is clear because the extension for those on HR 4213 is not what you believe it to be and you will feel what the 99ers feel sooner than you think.

Now for the other side of the coin…. unemployment gets extended i keep my home, when things break and wear out i have some way of getting it (hint why do you think the spending numbers keep going up and down) not things like dishwashers but clothes wearing out, kids outgrowing and wearing out clothes, vehicles breaking down, etc., and i can make myself presentable when i do finally get a job interview
So you call it scapegoats….. I don’t care who’s fault it is I need to keep money coming in and i don’t care where it comes from as long as it gives me enough money to keep our 5 lives going till i find something to get me and my family on our feet, I’ve paid taxes supporting our government since i was 16yrs old, I’m 43 now. It’s time for me to be helped (and everybody else like me (not the ones sitting around doing nothing but) working extremely hard on getting on my feet to get out of this mess

Ok i got a job in fact i got 2 plus i am attending college full time i have a wife that works and 3 kids….. one job pay minimum wage and the other just above but it is only a 12hr rec….. i don’t even make enough to disqualify myself from unemployment…. also you said a job any job well how are we all to do that when in Michigan were i am for every vacant job out there, there are 5 people applying for it so even if every job got filled tomorrow the unemployment rate would only drop by 1/5th what it is now…. I went from $800wk working to about that every two weeks and when unemployment runs out (if it hasn’t already because of the cut off on Nov 30) in January i will drop to $600mth….. Ok so i got two jobs i am educating myself to get into a growing field) i graduate in June of 2012 with an associate degree…. but here’s the biggest problem NO

Bureau of Labor Statistics does not use unemployment insurance to calculate the unemployment rate. Here is a link explianing how it is calculated

Take any job you can? My husband was laid off 2 years ago and has been looking for a job ever since. That includes McDonald’s, dishwashing, anything to get a job. And everyday the answer is still no job openings. And everyday he is back out there trying again. He even tried to get a paper route. Believe me it’s not from lack of trying. There is just no jobs. And if unemployment extensions are not extended there will be even less jobs. Maybe your right and it won’t solve anything, but tell that to my husband when we lose our home because we can’t afford the bills. Take any job? He would love to.

Actually, you are considered unemployed as long as you are looking for work.

Unemployment Ins is not used for the unemployment statistic used by the Bureau of Labor(BLS). The BLS use a sample survey called Current Population Survey (CPS) along with US Cenuse Bureau figures to come up with the unemployment rate.

When initial claims are mentioned… theat comes from Unemeployment Insurance.

I seriously feel for these people as I was unemployed as of FEB 2010 up to recently. I just nabbed a job with the federal gov’t and in times like these I’ll take that over a private sector job any day. Most 99’ers are not unemployed by CHOICE. It is not a free ride and it is not easy to just “go get a job”… In the 10 months that I had been looking for work I got a bit desperate and I too applied for the “any” jobs and they looked at my last salary, which was in the 85K bracket, & for the most part said, ‘no thank you…’ They know someone with real life experience/career history is GONE as soon as something better comes along. So it really isn’t as “simple” as some people want to believe it is. In the 10 months it took to get a job offer I had to have applied for at minimum of 2 jobs a day, meaning at least 400 applications, & plenty which consisted of PACKAGES & of all those applications I had gotten a total of 4 interviews. So what does that tell you about the current job market!?

I think that we should continue to contact the House of Representatives to let them know that we so desperately need additional weeks added and a Tier V. If not, they SHOULD NOT pass the bill. Let taxes go up for the wealthy and by the time that they figure out that additional weeks are mandatory there will be some money to pay for it. I want the other unemployment Americans to get their checks. I am sorry if I selfish, but I feel that we all need to get paid and the only way to insure that is for the House of Representatives not to pass this bill, send it back and demand changes. They should have a standoff with the Republicans. If the Republicans are resigned to the unemployed not having money to exist on then they should not get this lavish tax deal at our expense. It’s not right!!!!!

Heck… I had to pay the 300.00 filing fee out of pocket (Borrowed from a friend) and repayed them. No lawyer involved… Just reading and applying my own smarts to get it done correctly the first time.

gerryd 12/15/2010 10:05am

WE DEFINITELY NEED TO BAND TOGETHER AND REVOLT!!! LET’S FIGURE OUT HOW! THERE ARE BASICALLY MILLIONS OF US AND IF YOU INCLUDE ALL THE PEOPLE IN OUR LIVES WHO ARE FEELING OUR PAIN AND ANGUISH DAILY, THAT IS A HELL OF A LOT OF PEOPLE!!! LOTS OF VOTERS FOR 2012!!!!!

gerryd 12/15/2010 9:59am

And Bear – you have EVERY RIGHT to vent. At least we know and experience your pain. I am not offended at all!! Just vent to us – people who care about you. I watched them take my car, at 2 AM, and put it on a Trailer Bed to repossess it. I had it hidden for two weeks in a hospital parking lot, but figured I’d better give it up. The only satisfaction I got was to call the Financial Company and tell them their REPO man should be fired when he could not even FIND my car and I was the one who told them where it was!!! Now they want me to pay them $5000 more!! I gave them the number of the White House and told them they would have to speak to my Financial Adviser!!!!

gerryd 12/15/2010 9:54am

Do you realize just how many of the “long term employed” that these hypocritical, heartless, Dictators have duped into thinking they are included in this Tax Cut Debacle? Many 99er’s THINK they fall into this bracket!! I have 3 friends who are 99er’s and they thought they were included because of Jake Tapper OPENLY LYING on World News Tonight last Friday Night that 9 MILLION unemployed people will get benefits!! He out and out LIED!!!! Typical of ABC – very Republican Biased Millionaires themselves!! Also, many of the current unemployed, the 2 million they keep referring to, are on their last Tier 4 or State Extended benefits and THEN their benefits will stop!!! They THINK they are going to get it until Dec. 2011!!! The unemployed HOSTGES were used and then DUPED by EVERYONE – the “DICTATORS”, the NEWS MEDIA – EVERYONE!!!! Of those 2 million “long termed” unemployed HOSTAGES, approx. 30,000 per month will be losing their benefits but they do not even know it!!! Look out then!!
