99ers Crisis About to Get Much Worse

December 14, 2010 - by Donny Shaw

I’ve been trying to make the point that the 99er problem — people exhausting all unemployment benefits without finding a job — is about to get much worse because we’re approaching 99 weeks from the brunt of the recession unemployment spike. Congress is not planning to add more weeks of unemployment benefits and the Federal Reserve is projecting the unemployment rate to stay pretty much where it is for the next year. Putting it all together, this means that for the foreseeable future, there will no jobs and no government support for the millions of 99ers.

This graph from Calculated Risk showing three years of job losses makes it very clear — millions of people who lost their jobs in the deepest part of the recession are about to be dropped off a cliff:

Adding insult to injury, 99ers are not even tracked by the government. The way the employment statistics system works, when people go off of unemployment, they are not considered part of the work force and not factored into the numbers for employed or unemployed. This is why we have no firm number of 99ers, and why it’s so easy for policymakers to ignore this crisis.

Expect homelessness, the suicide rate, and despeartion-related crimes to spike. And remember to look at this when the consumer recovery doesn’t turn out as rosy as expected over the next couple years.

Idea to help every 99er. Special tier 5, draw UI on Tier 5 until the National rate drops below 7.5%.

Reasons
No one is on UI because they want to.
No one gets rich off UI.
Every dollar UI puts 1.70 – 2.00 back into economy.
Reduce burden on other assistance programs. it is gonna cost one way or another
Getting UI have to keep actively searching for work.
Gives a more accurate number of Unemployment.
Keep people off the streets, in homes, food, bills paid.
US goal get people back to work, People use UI to find work.
Everyone can have “enough time” to find work during this economic storm.

If it costs 80 billion for 4 tiers of UI for 13 months and say there is an equal number of 99ers, to the 4 tiers then this system could run for 10 years for same value the top 2% get in Tax breaks for 2 years.

Stops UI bickering in congress and gets focus creating jobs to get National rate down to stop Special Tier 5.

Once National rate below 7.5% Special Tier 5 would end 30 days from announcement.

Weird, the White House say`s there is nothing more they can do for the unemployed, and at the same time increase our debt 900 billion as a gift to the wealthy (MERRY CHRISTMAS). Right now the senate is talking about having to cut spending in the near future to make up for, what their doing now. When they cut spending do you suppose that they`ll cut anything that the rich receive, or what remains as a life support for the common man ie. social security, medicare, medicaid, healthcare, no child left behind, food stamps, welfare, do away with labor laws. In truth are we not looking allot like, what we fought against, and called evil elsewhere in the world ??

Rogue, life is a bitch, karma always comes back to bite you in the ass for the things you say and do…..and someday soon you too could be feeling what these people are feeling. They paid into the goverment for unemployment insurance, its not their fault that the economy went belly up and they lost their jobs. They want to work, none of them are getting rich collecting unemployment benefits, they are just surviving, feeding their familes and keeping a roof over their heads. Your attitude towards them really leaves a lot to be desired, if your mama never taught you to keep your mouth shut if you have nothing nice to say, then allow me. Someday soon you may need these people to back you up when your living out in the street and some uneducated moron tells you to find a job when you can’t.

The version of the unemployment extension legislation that just went through the Senate and is headed for the House includes billions in MORE tax breaks for essentials such as NASCAR and the rum producers in the Virgin Islands (and there are others). Nice to know our legislators have a firm grasp on their priorities………..sigh

Not counting the unemployed that have run out of payments will keep the stats for NYSE and etc inflated and will eventually cause a crisis. All the figures that are reported for daily trading will be inflated … hold on the market will slide when this is all done. Crash????

This is not the CHANGE That I was hoping for, but to be honest, the operative word here is not change, but HOPE.! What`s going to happen when hope is lost, and a new class of poverty is set adrift? I`v got a feeling this is just the tip of the iceberg, and a tempest is on the near horizon. GOD HELP US ALL..

In all honesty, I’ve had several employers mention to me on interviews that they are not interested in hiring people who have been unemployed for 2 years. They always ask what have been doing these last two years. Um, Looking for a job. Also, most of references are past supervisors that are now unemployed and felt the hardship of this recession. Domino effect.

OMG!!! This is absolutely ridiculous…once you run out of 99 weeks, you are not considered part of the workforce?? How much more pathetic can our government actually get? I am disgusted that I live in a country that it’s own government is actually turning its back on their own people!!!

Doing away with labor laws does increase the bottom line, if you own the company. And where do you think the spending cuts will come from ?

BenjaWiz 12/15/2010 8:52am

Washington does not care about the poor they are hell bent on destroying the middle class or whats left of the middle class. Obama is a Wall St. crook and lied about change he’s continued the BUSH Administrations policies they will always worry about themselves.

Pray that you never experience financial hardship. You should not rejoice when others suffer such misfortune. Do not be so arrogant during such a terrible time of financial trouble. Always remember, that we never know what will happen to us in the future. Don’t rely on your false sense of security.

Liberal4Change 12/14/2010 9:07am

Bankruptcy will also increase. We will have a another huge dip in the recession. I’m one of those that was laid off in Mar 09. At least my husband is still working.

I can’t believe that Congress just can’t seem to get it right. Everything is only half done….except for the rich. We just don’t have the lobbying power.

Sher1 12/14/2010 3:11pm

KEEP the FIGHT ALIVE for TIER 5.. www.american99ersunion.com EVERYONE continue to fax that letter to your Congressman and CALL if you can. Nothing has passed and there is NO bill President Obama can sign so lets continue on and fight to demand ALL of the unemployed are included in this legislation. ALL of the UNEMPLOYED!

Liberal4Change 12/14/2010 9:26am

Well, I wonder how many businesses will close down due to the lack of sales? I’m not spending on anything for Christmas. I only have until the end of Januanry on unemployment.

Liberal4Change 12/14/2010 10:28am

Well, Congress is full of Christians… who are turning their back on their fellow man. I doubt praying will change their mind.

For everyone that still has a job… this is not over yet. So I wouldn’t be so quick to judge… you might just find yourself losing a job before this is all over with.

BenjaWiz 12/15/2010 9:09am

When Wikileaks released classified documents alot of you might have said shame on such a person for releasing such documents but why not release the truth about what Governments do? they should be accountable to you the people don’t agree with them that this was bad because their actions over 11+ years these politicians have showed they do not care about us.
