99ers Crisis About to Get Much Worse

December 14, 2010 - by Donny Shaw

I’ve been trying to make the point that the 99er problem — people exhausting all unemployment benefits without finding a job — is about to get much worse because we’re approaching 99 weeks from the brunt of the recession unemployment spike. Congress is not planning to add more weeks of unemployment benefits and the Federal Reserve is projecting the unemployment rate to stay pretty much where it is for the next year. Putting it all together, this means that for the foreseeable future, there will no jobs and no government support for the millions of 99ers.

This graph from Calculated Risk showing three years of job losses makes it very clear — millions of people who lost their jobs in the deepest part of the recession are about to be dropped off a cliff:

Adding insult to injury, 99ers are not even tracked by the government. The way the employment statistics system works, when people go off of unemployment, they are not considered part of the work force and not factored into the numbers for employed or unemployed. This is why we have no firm number of 99ers, and why it’s so easy for policymakers to ignore this crisis.

Expect homelessness, the suicide rate, and despeartion-related crimes to spike. And remember to look at this when the consumer recovery doesn’t turn out as rosy as expected over the next couple years.

Well jakj1, check the grammar of your statement;
“Secondly caps are considered a childish!”.

You live in a glass house. So stop throwing stones.

bigearl666 has every right to be VERY angry at our politicians.
This person claims to have lost everything and so has a right to be mad as hell and does not need to be polite about it… I wouldn’t!!!

Most every sane and informed American has been pissed-off at these jerks for some time.
If you’re not, then you are clearly a moron.

Comments like what “Taxipayer” left are exactly why foreign countries view us as incredibly ignorant. It is so easy for those who aren’t going through what MILLIONS of Americans are enduring right now to make remarks such as calling we unemployed “lazy”, or “slackers”. The thing is, they fail to see that most (if not all) states require a weekly job search and applications to at least two jobs. These things are checked by the state’s labor and industry department, so one can’t really lie about searching for work. If there are so many jobs out there, why are so many people unemployed? Yes, it is so simple to make such ignorant and insensitive remarks when you don’t have to explain to your children why Santa isn’t coming this year, or choose between paying the rent or putting food on the table. 99ers, my thoughts and prayers go out to you all. I’m only a few weeks away from joining you, with the hopes that congress does something to help!

Well, Congress is full of Christians… who are turning their back on their fellow man. I doubt praying will change their mind.

For everyone that still has a job… this is not over yet. So I wouldn’t be so quick to judge… you might just find yourself losing a job before this is all over with.

Didn’t mean Tier 5 shouldn’t be approved – it needs to be because everyone will suffer. Not only the unemployed suffer but the seniors and any middle American that has a 401K or a pension. With an inflated market the downside has to come. Investment in stock market is also done by middle class (401K, Pensions, seniors pension funds. Seniors that are receiving a pension will have it reduced. All this gets reduced with the market down slide. The Tier has to be approved and paid until jobs are created to cover not only for the unemployed but for seniors too. A senior on a pension will suffer. Some can’t work and will never be able to and depend on the pensions to survive. I just meant this is a bigger issue than is being addressed. Many, many more suffer than is realized without the passage. More people losing their homes, and food.

Senator McCain is whining because Sen. Harry Reid said they have to work on Christmas and New Years! lol Good! They should be working the holidays since they took away ours!!! KEEP EM IN SESSION HARRY!!!!! They don’t deserve a break. They are the cause of many suicides and malnourished families. Why should they get to enjoy themselves!

BenjaWiz 12/15/2010 9:09am

When Wikileaks released classified documents alot of you might have said shame on such a person for releasing such documents but why not release the truth about what Governments do? they should be accountable to you the people don’t agree with them that this was bad because their actions over 11+ years these politicians have showed they do not care about us.

Although I think unions and minimum wage laws have outlived their usefulness, I don’t see them ever leaving. There just isn’t the public support for it, and Congress and the President would be crucified.

Incidentally, I find it curious that you want to take money away from job creators to pay for benefits for people who aren’t working. Do you realize the employment implications of cutting into a company’s income?

that would make since if it was not true that republicans have historically provided more weeks of unemployment benefits then Obama,

Yes, I think we all get that, and so the question still stands unanswered, to reduce the debt you will have to raise taxes. And as a patriot, I say it`s time the wealthy carried some of the load that they have been spared while amassing their wealth, while giving the middle class a tax break.

I think that you are the biggest idiot of all if you actually believe that OBAMA has more power than Congress. If he puts anybody on his plantation I’m hoping it’s you because they always house JACKASSES on plantations.

Unemployed Non-99ers need to WAKE UP:

The unemployed in this country are being sold a bill of goods by the President, the media, phony pollsters and most members of Congress.

FACT: The 13 month extension in this compromise does NOT guarantee your benefits continue for the entire 13 months.
