Two Years of Tax Cuts for One Year of Unemployment Insurance. Nothing for the 99ers

December 16, 2010 - by Donny Shaw

The Democrats’ epic cave-in on the Bush tax cuts is now complete. Late Thursday night, by a vote of 277-148, the House of Representatives approved a deal brokered by President Obama and congressional Republicans to extend, for two years, the Bush tax cuts for all income levels in exchange for a one-year extension of the filing deadline for federal unemployment insurance. Because the version passed by the House is identical to the bill passed by the Senate earlier this week, it will be sent to Obama immediately and is expected to be signed into law later today.

The bill, H.R.4853, is estimated to cost $858 billion, and is entirely financed by increasing the federal deficit. In addition to the income tax extension and the unemployment insurance, the bill includes a one-year reduction in social security taxes, a two-year reduction of the estate tax (35% with the first $5 million fully exempt), a smattering of tax cuts designed to help middle-class families, and about $55 billion in pork for special interests.

Last week, the House passed slimmed-down version of the bill that would have let the Bush tax rates expire for all income above $250,000 and extend them for all middle and lower-income families, but that plan was rejected by Republicans in the Senate. On Wednesday, the Senate went ahead and passed the full Bush-tax-cuts extension. House Dems had already held an internal caucus vote showing near unanimous disapproval of the Senate bill, and on Thursday they revolted and caused the bill to be pulled from the floor for 7 hours. In the end, however, the majority of House Democrats voted for the Senate bill because it we the only option they were going to get from the Democratic leadership for keeping tax rates for the middle class from going up on January 1st.

Conspicuously missing from the bill is an extension of unemployment insurance for “99ers,” unemployed workers who have exhausted all of their available benefits and are still unemployed. This is a mounting crisis in the U.S, with millions of people who lost their jobs in the deepest part of the recession set to exhaust all government support and face a job market with a steady 9%+ unemployment rate. The Congressional Black Caucus talked about pushing for 99er relief in the bill for a second, and, according to OC commenters, the topic came up several times in the House debate before the bill was passed. But, in the end, the leadership just did not encourage the 99er advocates at all, and the bill was passed without even having a 99er-related amendment formally proposed at any point in the legislative process.

Harry Reid or Nancy Pelosi could have given us a tier 5 at anytime, they still could if they wanted to, all they have to do is attach a 3706 to the continuing resolution or the defense bill, it would guarantee passage, they refuse to help us.

Thia is the only president and only congress in US history not to extend unemployment when the unemployment rate has been at 7.2% or higher.

We are suffering more and longer under worse conditions than anytime in US history, This administration and leadership has the WORST RECORD IN US HISTORY when it comes to helping the unemployed.

  • PROFITGHANDII 12/17/2010 9:43am

Republicants do not care about you in the least. Democrats know they will refuse to vote yes or will hold up anything to help average wage slaves or unemployed.
If Democrats had said no, nothing positive for anyone in these groups would occur, because Republicants are looking out for the 2% failure filthy elite and non productive value less elite rich.
Look no further than Republicants for these shenanigans and giveaways to the elite and further enslavement of the average American. Why would anyone vote Republicant? Patent failures through and through, anyone unemployed had no business voting Republicannt and has no room to complain, this will get worse with the new partial power these callous thieving failure filthy elite suppoting anti American Republicants come into power next year.

  • PROFITGHANDII 12/17/2010 9:47am

So Republicants don’t mind deficit spending huge amounts to reward their failure filthy elite value less rich handlers. Now we got that clear, the Republicants are looking out for the elite, this doesn’t change and is a no brainer at the ballot box , so why did you re-elect these thieving failure filthy elite economic buffoons.

When Obama said we`re looking for change, I should have taken him literally( hey mister got any spare change?). I can only imagine how much money their spending to decorate the White House, while Americans are pushing shopping carts down the street looking through the trash cans. I think I figured out why vampire movies are so popular, as I know that I`ve been sucked dry, and left for dead. And to make matters worse I got a letter from the IRS, stating they have put a lean on my credit, (that ought to help me get up again) yea, good times !!!! Well “THANK YOU WASHINGTON” I feel the love your sending my way, and I`m wishing you the same.

hey beebblue, you made me laugh again thanks. ok heres one for you. After all this unemployment stress and no work for over 2 years now the I.R.S. sends me a letter today. It started lucky you have been chosen for or 2 year audit of tax years 2oo7 and 2008. now heres the funny part all the info they want receipts and stuff were damaged where I had them in storage. They are unreadable. so I called them today and first I asked them when did they get a sence of humor. he laughed and said they were trying to change the fear behind the irs. well lucky me was told that if i couldn’t get receipts to them id owe them money. so i told him i was a99er not getting any money. He said I would probably go to jail. Then I starting laughing and he thought I had cracked. I told him good at least I would have a roof over my head and three squares a day and medical paid for. He was silent for about two minutes and said I would receive a response letter in the mail.

@SEANURSE, Hi kiddo. Yea, I`ve had the IRS giving me a prostate exam for just over a year now (good times). I`ve got lawyers threating to sue me, and I always ask them to get in line, and if you have a problem with that take it up with the IRS, then get back to me ….(CLICK). It`s like having the ultimate body guard Quedo from the mob, on the other hand it`s also like having a vulture watching over me. Watcha gonna do ??? ya gotta love the freedom of not being afraid of “THEM” anymore. Well I hope Washington has a nice Christmas, and all their tree`s catch fire, while sugar plum fairies shit on their pillows while they sleep…….But I wish you well, and pray a blessing comes your way to light your path, and warm your heart.

One last thing, and it`s just a tip to those who are faced with self employment ie. (panhandling). I find that when asking for money, it`s best to have a gun, and a mask, as these increase your returns in ratio to effort and profitability, and since this is a cash only transaction, you don`t have to report it to the IRS. Thank you Washington for teaching me something by example….

I`M a 99er. I have 19 dollars left. I went back to school a year and a half ago because I felt this was the only way. So far, my GPA is a 3.37. For the last year, I have put in for over 1000 jobs. I have had two interviews and each time one of the interviewers says there must be a mistake, you should be interviewing for a different position.

  • adying99er 12/17/2010 3:01pm

I have 28 years of hardworking experience in this field, but since I am a century old, they feel I do not qualify for the position. I`m not sure what`s left for me to do because now I will not be able to afford the schooling. I am a single parent and the sole provider for my son. I think I`m tired, I`m tired of worrying and feeling sick all the time. This isn`t` life, the world has changed to were only the wealthy will survive and the people won`t fight for what …is..Rightfully ours.

  • adying99er 12/17/2010 3:02pm

The college students in Britain are trying to fight against the government with violence because that is all they have left. In the United States, we have the chance to changes things with the right to vote. Yet the people vote in those who use politics for their own personal gain and then the people, who vote them in want to complain about what is happening in congress and on Capitol Hill. Again another election, the chance to changes things, has passed. I tired of living, I`m tired of trying to make it alone. If you don`t like what is happening, then change it before it is too late.

HEY EVEN MY 72 YEAR OLD MOTHER THOUGHT THAT WAS FUNNY. SHE TOLD ME TO REFER THEM TO THE WHITE HOUSE AND LET THEM DEAL WITH THE IRS. THEN THE IDEA HIT ME THAT I SHOULD CALL A LAWYER. I EXPLAINED IT ALL AND HE STARTS LAUGHING AND ASKED ME IF I WANTED TO SUE THE BANKS THAT CAUSED THE RECESSION. IT HAD ME REALLY THINKING HARD. THIS MIGHT BE THE ANSWER.

the term 99er is the worst thing that ever happened to us(minus loosing our jobs, The term does not represent half of us!

“Before extended benefits expired on Nov. 30, just 24 states and Washington D.C. offered the full 99 weeks. Six states offered benefits for 93 weeks, five had them for 86 weeks, nine allowed 73 weeks, and five states were at 60. Mississippi was alone in offering 79 weeks.”

Hey there Abaratarr, Does it really matter if they call us “the more or less 99rs” S.O.L. is still S.O.L. and we`re all fingers on the same hand, fighting the same fight, some came first, and some will be last, but none will be the least among us.

it madders as much as obama saying and 99% of the population beliveing that the unemployed got 13 more months of benefits.

The masses now believe that the unemployed are eligible for 3+ years of benefits, when no one gets even 2 years and many only 60 weeks, that hurts us.

SItting here reading about everyone that is out of work with degrees is amazing. I am an ex-convict, I have been arrested over 30 times. I came here from California to Ohio (which has a high unemloyment rate) with $100, no home no job. Within a week I had a job working in a factory for minimum wage. Two weeks later I had a second factory offer making $1 more an hr. I took the higher offer of $8.70 and found a part time job working at Walmart for more money. Sure the first week I came here I went to shelters and heard the stories about people losing their jobs and they said they were collecting $350 a week with unemployment and why would they give up unemployment for the less or less amount of money and have to work. Now the joke is on them, I have gained a second raise and I am making $10 an hr now with benefits while they have nothing because it wasn’t enough.

    Dear Rocky,

It sounds like you figured out that your career as a criminal kept returning you to the slammer, so lets agree, you were not very good at it, but 30 times shows persistence. Now it seems that you want to use that persistence to stay out of jail, and that`s good, and I`m happy for you. But while you were trying to build your career using short cuts, allot of these people started from nothing but invested everything to work their way up the ladder, and allot of those years were spent going one step forward two steps back, and lets say after 20 or 30 years you`re finally enjoying the fruits of your labor, and then SURPRISE it`s gone, though you did everything right and played by the rules, man that`s gonna mess up your perspective on life don`t you think?. I`m not saying that`s everybody`s story, but it`s allot of peoples story, and their just trying to come to terms with it.

cont. I guess what I`m trying to say is, just because you were in jail, I don`t assume that you`re a baby raper, or a serial killer, as that would be a blanket assumption on my part, and I would be judging you from a bias point of view, and showing how ignorant I am. Well I do wish you the best, and keep up the good work.
    Sincerely, BB

  • Rationalview 12/18/2010 8:30am

Honestly, I don’t believe there is anything more that we can do – government officials (NJ Republican) don’t even want to allow the unemployed to receive what they have been – let alone increase the benefits to help the 99ers. So, I guess welfare and food stamps are the only answer – guess they don’t realize that is truly a hand-out that comes from another pocket in the government’s pants.

  • beenblue 12/18/2010 9:06am

Do you feel alone in this?. You`re not, and you`re not the only victims of a moral and ethical decline in this country. The Zadroga bill, also called 9/11 1st responders bill, has been filibustered by the Republicans non stop. These people set aside their personal lives 24/7 for 10 months to dig for other peoples loved ones in the contaminated rubble of the twin towers. Now their dying from cancer, and other diseases from the toxic conditions they were exposed to, and nobody is telling their story either, even though the bill is offset by closing tax loopholes, and it`s a standalone bill. So we are not the only ones this country, and its media is ignoring, to the shame of a government who turns its back on its hero`s, and news agencies who don`t report it.

P.S. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A WIN, WIN, IF THE DEMOCRATS PICKED IT UP AND RAN WITH IT, COMBINED WITH THE UNEMPLOYED IN THIS COUNTRY, IN THE AFTERMATH OF REPUBLICAN RULE. THE DEM`S COULD OF HAD A LAND SLIDE VICTORY.

P.S.S. This could also have been reversed, and the Republicans could have rebranded themselves, as looking out for all Americans. This is ridicules, no ones asking the right question.

HOW CAN WE GET ALL OF THE 99ER’S TOGETHER AND HAVE A GIANT MARCH ON WASHINGTON??? I AM SO DISGUSTED, AS YOU ALL ARE. THEY USED US BY INCLUDING US AS THEIR LEVERAGE AS THE OTHER 98% OF AMERICANS. WE WERE NOT IN THAT PERCENTAGE!! THEN DAGGER #1 WHEN OBAMA SAID DURING THE SIGNING THAT THIS WAS FOR THE PEOPLE WHO TRULY DID NEED IT – “THE MIDDLE-CLASS WORKERS WHO NEED THE HELP RIGHT NOW! THEY WILL BE HAPPY WHEN THEY OPEN THEIR PAYCHECKS IN JAN. AND SEE MORE MONEY IN IT”! HIS OWN WORDS!!! THEN DAGGER #2 HE STUCK INTO US WAS WHEN HE SAID “THIS WILL ALSO HELP KEEP 2 MILLION PEOPLE OUT OF POVERTY”!!! THE HELL WITH THE MILLIONS OF US WHO ARE NOW IN POVERTY AND HAVE BEEN!!! WAIT UNTIL THOSE 2 MILLION ON THEIR LAST TIER OR STATE EXTENDED START DROPPING OFF AT THE RATE OF 30,00 PER MONTH REALIZE THEY ARE NOT GOING ANY FURTHER BECAUSE OF NO TIER V!!! ALL HELL WILL BREAK LOOSE THEN I HOPE. THEY THINK THEY ARE GETTING IT FOR ANOTHER 13 MONTHS!!! THEY SURE AS HELL DID USE US AS PAWNS FOR THIS ONE!!!

  • gerryd 12/18/2010 10:15am

WELL OFF TO THE WELFARE ROLLS FOR US UNEMPLOYED!! WAIT UNTIL THE MIDDLE-INCOME ARE TAXED SKY HIGH IN A YEAR OR TWO, NOT ONLY BY THE FEDERAL THIEVES, BUT BY THEIR SPECIFIC STATE THIEVES AS WELL!!! SOMEBODY HAS TO PAY FOR THE HIGH DEFICIT RIGHT AND THE RISING WELFARE?? THEY USED THE UNEMPLOYED FOR HAVING TO PASS THIS BILL SO FAST, MISLEADING SO MANY PEOPLE TO THINL ALL UNEMPLOYED WOULD BE HELPED, SO GUESS WHO WILL BE USED AGAIN WHEN THE TAXES GET RAISED?? YEP – IT WILL ALL BE BECAUSE THEY GAVE SO MUCH TO THE UNEMPLOYED! THE ONE GOOD PART, IF THERE IS ANY AT ALL, WE WON’T HAVE TO PAY TAXES I GUESS!!! I PREDICT A REVOLUTION AND I HOPE I LIVE TO SEE IT!! i’m with you!! i’m so disappointed in the democratic party. i think that we should appeal to the republicans to get this done. it will make them look good in future and upcoming elections. our president could have dones SOMETHING for us, he did not. he fooled the american people to think that that we would get more in unemployment when in all he did was traded billions of dollars for an extension date. someone in washington should and could have brought this up and pressed it until an answer was given.I WANT THE WORLD TO KNOW THAT I AM NOT UNEMPLOYED BY CHOICE. WE 99ERS ARE BLAMED BECAUSE COMPANIES ARE NOT HIRING. HOW DO GET AROUND SOMETHING LIKE THAT? I FEEL LET DOWN BY MY COUNTRY. WE SEND MONEY TO EVERYBODY AND THEIR MOMMA – MILLIONS AND BILLIONS BUT THE OPPORTUNITY TO DO SOMETHING FOR THOSE WHO HAVE WORKED AND PAID TAXES WAS NOT EVEN ACKNOWLEDGED. WHAT IS IT GOING TO TAKE FOR THE GOVERNMENT TO SEE THAT WE’RE AT THIS CROSSROAD AT NO FAULT OF OUR OWN.

I can’t believe that anyone, especially a former politican would think that people would are in dire need of additional unemployment extensions should be required to perform community service to get those extensions. How dare anyone compare us to someone who has broken the law and we must perform community service or “do something” to get the benefits that we as working Americans are entitled too! Please go to this website and read the article.

    This is the website address:
    http://www.examiner.com/unemployment-in-hartford/unemployment-extension-2010-make-99er-s-do-community-service-for-benefits
Please read and forward this to as many newstations and congressmen/women as possible. Let the world put Mike Huckabee under the spotlight for saying this, maybe this way it will have an adverse effect. We will get more coverage on helping the 99ers. Also, if Mr. Huckabee ever runs for office for anything and you can vote for him – Don’t!
