Rep. Giffords Shot in the Head, Condition Unknown

January 8, 2011 - by Donny Shaw

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords [D, AZ-8] was shot in the head today while appearing at a public even in Tuscon, Arizona. At the time of this writing, 2:50 p.m. ET, reports are conflicting as to her condition. Some outlets have reported that she has been killed, while other say she remains in critical condition. [UPDATE, 3:17: KOLD News out of Tuscon reports Giffords is alive and in surgery.]

NPR describes what happened:

Giffords, who was re-elected to a third term in November, was hosting a “Congress on Your Corner” event at a Safeway in northwest Tucson when a gunman ran up and started shooting, according to Peter Michaels, news director of Arizona Public Media.

Giffords was talking to a couple when the suspect ran up and fired indiscriminately from about four feet away, Michaels said.

The suspect ran off and was tackled by a bystander. He was taken into custody. Witnesses described him as in his late teens or early 20s.

Giffords was transported to University Medical Center in Tucson.

At least 17 others were shot in the incident and 5 have been confirmed dead, including an aide to Giffords and a federal judge. Our thoughts are with Giffords and the other victims of this awful tragedy.

I’ve been armed for a long time. There is a time and a place for everything. Yosemite Sam political rhetoric is dangerous.

LucasFoxx, Your comment was actually open for interpretation, but some people are looking for the occasion to be offended, and calling you a fascist was out of line. I believe in the right to bear arms, for hunting and home protection, but not at political rallies.

It, was a terrible incident and he did not need to resort to such extremes. Yet, congress needs to help 99er’s and extend unemployment. Add more weeks or add tier 5. HELP those in need The media is trying to spin it as if it had nothing to do with politics. Yet, I am not so convinced due to the political atmosphere that we have been exposed to. Also, he was in her district and was not happy with what was happening in his district. Still, this does not excuse his actions he could have been proactive in other ways. Violence is not the answer. Ever!!!

now congress is using this incident as an excuse to take next week off work! people are suffering, congress needs to go to work and pass a tier five unemployment extension immediately, millions of people have had no income since march, Obama flat out lied when he said that he was extending unemployment benefits for 13 months he simply extended the deadline to sign up for the current extension for the newly unemployed.

Loughner was unemployed, it makes people crazy after a while, a grown man forced to live with his parents because he can not find work is humiliating!

I fear that Washington’s inaction to help the unemployed is creating millions of Loughners.

Congress please help us, please go to work, please provide help to the millions of people that are desperate and suffering before more unemployed people are pushed over the edge as Loughner was.

“Any effort to expand unemployment insurance benefits will take place in the House of Representatives. On Wednesday, Speaker of the House John Boehner announced that the House will meet for 9 days in February and currently there are three days scheduled in March for the House to meet. That does not seem to leave a lot of time for any legislation that may expand unemployment benefits to even be considered – let alone passed – before April at the earliest.
While there are rumors – and please note that I said these are “rumors” – that a bill may be introduced in the House that will create a Tier V, given all these facts, as well as discussions I have had with people in DC, I have come to the reluctant, yet I beehive well founded conclusion that any bill that envisions expansion of benefits will have to be full paid for (that is not considered “emergency spending” if it has any chance at all of passage in both the Senate and the House of Representatives.”

i feel for her family, but because of her lack of effort to help the unemployed, people are starving and freezing to death this winter. Allowing people to freeze to death is not a violent solution to the government trying to get the unemployment people off the books, but the more unemployed that the government allows to die off this winter the better the unemployment rate will look, keeping the stock market high and the rich happy.

Violence is not the answer, but how can it not be expected when people kids are suffering, people are loosing their homes, their lives and their children, unemployed men are going to jail in record numbers for not being able to pay child support even though their are no jobs(at lease those guys are warm and get to eat) it is only going to get worse if nothing is done to help the people in this country that are loosing everything.

A tier five unemployment extension is desperately needed, people are dieing!

“Loughner was unemployed”

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/social/dems08/gabrielle-giffords-shot-c_n_806211_73218712.html

Gabrielle Giffords voted against an unemployment extension and voted to give amnesty to illegal aliens who are keeping our unemployment rate high.

People are desperate and have nothing left to loose the economic situation in this country is causing a huge increase in mental illness, i fear that if unemployment benefits are not extended for the long term unemployed (99ers) and if nothing is done to provide jobs for the hungry and now mentally ill masses, incidents such as this one will become a daily occurrence.

We have a wonderful system of government that allows us to change things with elections, people need to know that now more then ever, violence is not needed to change our government we just need people to pay attention to who they are voting for in the primaries.

To bring up the 2nd amendment issue at a time yesterday morning when they didn’t even know for sure if Congresswoman Gifford had survived is nothing more than opportunistic. You aught to be ashamed, but since you brought it up let me remind you that if someone had been armed they may have all survived. Don’t think that just because you want to impose your dictatorial governmental policy on the rest of us that you will be “SAFE” by abolishing the 2nd amendment! You need to seriously reconsider your foolish ideas and your rude sense of timing. I pray for Congresswoman Gifford her family and all those hurt by this insane tragedy! I pray she lives to fully recover to fight another day for what she believes is right! That is a free republican form of government! That is what our government and our forefathers fought to give us shed their blood!!! Not your Facist ideas of freedom!

LucasFoxx 01/09/2011 3:29am

Sad and frightning. They were screaming about “2nd Ammendment remedies”. What did they think that would look like?

Political assassinations are something that cannot exist in a democracy without serious repercussions. Presidents quickly became ensconced in a protective bubble after Lincoln’s assassination, and the same thing is in danger of happening to congresspeople. This attack is both chilling to democracy and an attack on the forms and institutions of democracy. The American political tradition is under attack here. But how should the country respond? The death penalty seems appropriate, but does it provide any value compared to supermax lockup, essentially political exile?

This is a sad day for America when censorship is taken to an extreme like this, and assassination is extreme censorship. The blogs are spewing vile unfounded opinions from the left and the right, that is reflecting the extreme polarization in this country. It truly is a sad day, and my heart goes out to the Gifford family.

suzieqs 01/08/2011 11:25am

I didn’t know her personally, but I feel sad for our country that we have people who feel that only violence can solve their problems. It’s a sad day once again for our country, and a sad, sad day for the Gifford family. May all of our prayers help to give a measure of comfort to her family, and I agree zegota that there should be a place for those of violence.

zegota 01/08/2011 9:27am

I don’t think I’ve ever been sadder than this. Giffords was an absolutely wonderful person I had the pleasure of meeting multiple times. I wish I believed in Hell, so I could imagine a place where her assassin, and the people who support him, will spend eternity.
