New York Metro Area - Emergency #PIPA Protest Tomorrow
January 17, 2012 - by David Moore
For readers in the NYC metro area — tomorrow, join me & over 12,000 others who have RSVP’d for this emergency NY Tech MeetUp protest of NY Senators Schumer & Gillibrand’s office, in opposition to their continued co-sponorship of the #PIPA internet censorship bill. Latest developments: state of PIPA play in the Senate, by Public Knowledge, our allies in the American Censorship coalition.
I’ve lived quite happily in NYC for nearly a decade now, and the past five years have seen a remarkable acceleration of its development as a robust tech community — which has now come together as a diverse movement (tech entrepreneurs, non-profits, venture capitalists, independent media) to protest the terrible PIPA legislation … and demand Sens. Schumer & Gillibrand switch sides immediately and convey to Sen. Reid that they’ll be voting against it on Jan. 24th when the Senate returns.
Time »12:30 – 2:00 PM
Where »780 Third Ave (at 49th street) — outside the offices of New York Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand.
What to Bring »Your bodies and your minds, your co-workers, your friends, your family, and your social networks.
Who Will Be There »Everyone who cares about the New York Tech Industry and the future of the web. Special guest speakers to be announced.
How To Sign Up »Please RSVP here to show your support.
Tweet This »I’ll be at the Emergency NY Tech Meetup on January 18 to stop SOPA and PIPA. Join us: http://nytm.org/sos
… though PPF operates as a web-based team, I’m proud to be active in the NYC tech scene, with a pronounced affinity for our not-for-profit & open-source allies. Big appreciations to the NY Tech MeetUp for coordinating this robust community response and being willing to mobilize membership in such a direct & hopefully impactful fashion. I’ll be pogo-ing on the sidewalk and loudly professing my love for p2p free political speech on the open Web, supported by net neutrality, independent media, and comprehensive electoral reform for true #opengov. In the most-short term, mostly opposing PIPA.
SOPA may be significantly hobbled in the House — its sponsor, Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX), just announced today he will seek to have it marked-up again as soon as Feb. 2012 (!!?!) — hey it gets complicated; it should’ve been a clear non-starter; it’s preposterously bad legislation & a terrible legal framework with or without China-style DNS blocking; Congress is systemically corrupt, remember) — PIPA is still very much alive, and has far too much support — past OC Blog coverage.
Apologies that this post is NY region-specific — wherever you are, you can whip the Senate against PIPA on our wiki community project. There’s just a week left to kill the worst net legislation in history. Spread the word: http://nytm.org/sos. Press interested in covering the protest should contact Andrew Rasiej, chair of the NY Tech MeetUp.
