Crazy House
August 1, 2008 - by Donny Shaw
The House of Representatives voted to adjourn for their month-long August recess at 11:23 this morning, but the Republicans just won’t go home. Despite the lights and microphones in the House chamber being turned off, Republicans are standing their ground, protesting the Democratic leadership’s refusal to allow votes on domestic oil drilling.
The Crypt’s got excellent coverage of the event. Check it out:
> . Update 4: Republican leaders just sent out a notice looking for a bullhorn, and leadership aides are trying to corral all the members who are still in town to come speak on the floor and sustain this one-sided debate.
>
>Also, Republicans can thank Shadegg for turning on the microphones the first time. Apparently, the fiesty Arizona conservative started typing random codes into the chamber’s public address system and accidentally typed the correct code, allowing Republicans brief access to the microphone before it was turned off again.
>
>"I love this," Shadegg told reporters up in the press gallery afterward. “Congress can be so boring. … This is a kick.” .
And:
> . It has been quite the scene on the House floor this afternoon, as GOP staff members have kept the chamber filled with an eclectic assortment of people.
>
>Boy Scouts, members of the German army, stray tourists and even members in shorts and t-shirts have all been spotted on the floor at different times.
>
>"You are not witnessing a revolt," said Rep. Mike Pence. “You are witnessing democracy in action.” .
Also, since the House is officially adjourned, C-SPAN isn’t covering any of this (they have no control over the cameras they use). Thankfully, some members of the GOP are keeping us updated on Twitter and Qik.

We need to revise the way congress currently conducts(or not)business.
The idea that the people's representatives, paid by the people they are supposed to represent, can ignore a serious problem affecting every tax paying citizen, is the result of years of self-serving laws that have evolved through the elitist system practiced by congress.
Nancy Pelosi doesn't have to worry about the price of fuel, her only complaint is that she doesn't have enough fuel in her taxpayer-provided jet to make it non-stop from Washington to California. Why shoud she allow a vote that might hinder the Democratic Presidential candidate's chances for a win. The people paying over $4 a gallon,
her state being the highest, don't rate
her attention even though they pay for her salary and impressive list of benefits.
Impeachment is not a word people like to hear but maybe it's time to get congess' attention by firing the worst of them. A concerted effort by middle class taxpayers is needed.
It's already been well established that drilling off our coastlines for oil will NOT bring down gas prices.
The Democrats are courageously refusing to drive more holes into our delicate ecosystems because they have taken a principled stand against a foolish and dangerous proposal.
Do you help an addict by making him sell his clothes to buy more drugs?
"It's already been well established that drilling off our coastlines for oil will NOT bring down gas prices."
Says who? Just the prospect of increased drilling (when the President lifted the executive order) brought prices down. Anyone who claims that the price of oil is not immediately affected by futures markets is either naive or disingenuous.
"It's already been well established that drilling off our coastlines for oil will NOT bring down gas prices."
So who did the well established documentation on that? Whoever it is sure needs a lesson on supply and demand. We are not talking about tomorrow or even next week here. Drilling is a long term solution but unless we address the situtaion now, you who don't want to drill but certainly want to complain--and all the rest of us will be paying much more than $4.00 a gallon in the very near future. Drilling is not the total answer, but it is a viable choice given what we have to work with. Do you realize that we use over 20 millon barrels of oil a day and import nearly 75% of it? With oil at 125 a barrel that amounts to over $56 billion each month which would work out to approximately $186 each month for every man, woman, and child in the U.S? Talk about spending your money wisely..thats pretty close to months rent for many people.. Come,..wake up..look at what's happening here.
Repairs
oil markets may be a little more complex then intro to macro economics.
The energy crisis is a fire under our ass to figure out some comprehensive sustainable strategy. Dilling in ANWAR, offshore, and tapping the strategic reserves would all only momentarily provide relief as well as delay our nation’s dialogue on energy. What then are we going to do when oil again reaches 4 plus dollars in the future. Congress is dysfunctional; we must work in the clutch.
So much for capitalism regulating itself...
"Capitalism regulating itself..." ?
19th Century myth. You see capitalism regulate itself with the mortgage crisis. Who helped finance the sale of Bear Stearns so that J.P.Morgan Chase would buy it? And did you notice how the offer was raised to $10.00 per share once the government did that? Some self regulation.
Take the market speculation driving up oil prices. There is an example of a market "regulating itself". All of this has come about because of the Government deregulating the commodity markets. (Check out the Enron Loophole).
These Republicans staying at the House is just a show. A meaningless show in an election year. Brought to you buy the oil industry who is having a field day screwing over you and me.
