Obama's 'American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan'

January 3, 2009 - by Donny Shaw

In his weekly radio and video address this morning, President-elect Obama gave the most detailed description yet of his economic stimulus proposal:

Here are the five things he says the stimulus will do:

  • double renewable energy production and renovate public buildings to make them more energy efficient;
  • engage contractors across the nation to create jobs rebuilding our crumbling roads, bridges, and schools;
  • update and computerize our health care system to cut red tape, prevent medical mistakes, and help reduce health care costs by billions of dollars each year;
  • build 21st century classrooms, labs, and libraries;
  • provide direct tax relief to 95 percent of American workers.

Obama will meet with Democrat and Republican congressional leaders on Monday to negotiate the size and scope of the stimulus package, and on Wednesday the House Steering and Policy Committee will hold the first hearing of the 111th Congress to discuss the proposal.

    It’s what he did in Chicago. Get the federal government to build, maintain and renovate more building in Chicago. Public buildings, schools, labs and libraries.

    Who is engaging the contractors? Federal government, state or city?

    His tax relief is 600 dollars I’d rather pay in taxes with a decent income.

    Did Ombama hint on George Stephanopolis’ program that economic help might be accompanied by changes (cuts?) in social security and medicare?

    Everyone is thinking and will do anything just to save money. President-elect Barack Obama’s proposed stimulus package would provide businesses with billions of dollars in refunds on taxes they paid several years ago. The Obama speech is sparking many talks about the new stimulus package and the payday loan reform going on in New Hampshire. Barack Obama gave his economic address today, and a few Republicans had something to say about the plan. Fortunately, everyone agrees that a stimulus package is what the American people need, and they need it fast. Too many people need a payday loan nowadays just to get by. Not surprisingly, though, House Minority Leader John Boehner and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell agreed that the plan was too costly. Boehner declares that “we can’t buy prosperity with more spending,’’ and McConnell suggested that money given to states should be loans instead of grants. I think law makers all over the country realize the dire economic straits the nation is facing and the need for action. Time is of essence, or our great grandchildren could still be dealing with the economic fallout.

    Where is the actual stimulus plan? I found one of the drafts earlier but haven’t found the one that was passed.
