How do Extended Benefits Affect Unemployment Duration? A Regression Discontinuity Approach

Abstract:
This paper studies a program that extends the maximum duration of unemployment benefits from 30 weeks to 209 weeks. Interestingly, this program is targeted to individuals aged 50 years or older, living in certain eligible regions in Austria. In the evaluation, I use sharp discontinuities in treatment assignment at age 50 and at the border between eligible regions and control regions to identify the effect of extended benefits on unemployment duration. Results indicate that the duration of job search is prolonged by at least .09 weeks per additional week of benefits among men, whereas unemployment duration increases by at least .32 weeks per additional week of benefits among women. The salient differences between men and women are consistent with the lower minimum age for early retirement applying to women.

Found this on Yahoo News and unemployment extension is included but it may not be until November when they take this up so we will have to keep doing what we got to do!

It’s amazing how information never gets back tous until later, I say this because I wasn’t aware that the White House would have accepted the unemployment extension if it was added to the Rescue Bill as long as the other attachments were not included such as food stamps and medical but Nancy did not want to break up the deal.
I am sorry but our monies have ran OUT and we have no other recourse and there are NO jobs why could she have not just been more dutious towards the obvious and give us something to help us who have no way of paying our bills. Now Mrs. Pelosi I am truly shocked and sadden by your decisions and I know you made a terrible mistake in that you would have saved a lot of families by allowing the unemployment bill to have passed.
if that AP reporter had it correct. i wouldn’t count on it. if you see that stated on other news sources, then that increases the odds that they got it right…everything i’ve read says the white house is opposed to the extension. remember fratto??
At this point and time any one who is sincere about helping the American poor people and restructuring these United States what the hell—they have my vote.
I am tired of working like a dog and watching my money go to nothing. Now I haave to start over again at the age that I am—I do not mind working but I have been working since I was eighteen years of age and had to go to college, marry and raise my kids. Now I am a Grandmother using up all of my retirement funds and hell I am not ready to retire and if I was I have “NO DAMN MONEY”. Whoever or whomever wish to censor this may until it makes sense. I am trying everyday to understand this global mess that somebody got us into and we all are involved some way because it is affecting or is going to affect us all eventually.

The Repugs will block any attempt for a UI extension for now. The Dems will call a lame duck session after the election. We have a good chance of the Dems getting it thru if Obama wins the election. It’s NOT Pelosi’s fault, the current PREZ will veto any UI extension, that’s the deal.

No kidding – because after they voted FOR the bailout, the House passed a stand-alone ui extension, knowing it couldn’t be moved ahead, because the Senate was out. So they now could say how wonderful they were that they voted for ui. But they wouldn’t put it in the bailout.

FEAR is the only thing that gets them moving. Paulson and Bernanke did a GREAT job of instilling great fear into them, but because the first bailout bill didn’t happen fast enough, they had time to question if this was the right thing to do and then vetoed it. Then when the market tanked almost 800 pts the fear was back and they passed it. If we try to play on their sympathy, it won’t work. But if we make them see how scary life will be, even for THEM, if they don’t extend unemployment, then they will listen. FEAR that there will be crime, rioting, looting and that even one of them could become a victim of crime. FEAR is a great motivator. FEAR is what’s destroying the market right now. FEAR is the only thing they will listen to now.
