The Whig Party was a political party of the United States during the era of Jacksonian democracy. Considered integral to the Second Party System and operating from 1833 to 1856,¹ the party was formed in opposition to the policies of President Andrew Jackson and the Democratic Party. In particular, the Whigs supported the supremacy of Congress over the Executive Branch and favored a program of modernization and economic protectionism. Their name was chosen to echo the American Whigs of 1776, who fought for independence, and because “Whig” was then a widely recognized label of choice for people who saw themselves as opposing autocratic rule.² The Whig Party counted among its members such national political luminaries as Daniel Webster, William Henry Harrison, and their preeminent leader, Henry Clay of Kentucky. In addition to Harrison, the Whig Party also counted four war heroes among its ranks, including Generals Zachary Taylor and Winfield Scott. Abraham Lincoln was a Whig leader in frontier Illinois.

In its over two decades of existence, the Whig Party saw two of its candidates, Harrison and Taylor, elected President of the United States. Both, however, died in office. John Tyler became president after Harrison’s death, but was expelled from the party, and Millard Fillmore, who became president after Taylor’s death, was the last Whig to hold the nation’s highest office.

The party was ultimately destroyed by the question of whether to allow the expansion of slavery to the territories. With deep fissures in the party on this question, the anti-slavery faction successfully prevented the nomination of its own incumbent President Fillmore in the U.S. presidential election of 1852; instead, the party nominated General Winfield Scott, who was soundly defeated. Its leaders quit politics (as Lincoln did temporarily) or changed parties. The voter base defected to the Republican Party, various coalition parties in some states, and to the Democratic Party. By the U.S. presidential election of 1856, the party had lost its ability to maintain a national coalition of effective state parties and endorsed Millard Fillmore, now of the American Party, at its last national convention

True democratic government depends on citizens being able to monitor and participate in the actions and activities of their government. And this is not only true in our country, obviously. Just like Sunlight, My Society in the UK and VisibleGovernment.ca in Canada are applying Web 2.0 tools to facilitate openness and transparency in their governments.

Jennifer Bell, VisibleGovernment.ca’s director, learned of Change Congress‘ national movement to end corruption in Congress. Specifically, Jennifer was impressed by Change Congress asking congressional candidates to make four simple commitments: No money from lobbyists or PACs; vote to end earmarks; support reform to increase congressional transparency; support publicly-financed campaigns. So inspired, her organization has launched I Believe In Open .ca where they are asking candidates to agree to five commitments: Support reforms that increase government transparency and accountability; make campaign promises specific and measurable, and report progress on promises and their metrics at least semi-annually; publish the content of his or her daily schedule (quite similar to our Punch Clock Campaign), including meetings with lobbyists and special interest groups; support reforms allowing free access to scientific and survey data gathered by government institution; and support reforms that make it easier for Canadians to obtain government information they have a right to know.

You can read a good article about VisibleGovernment.ca’s campaign in The Epoch Times, which reports as of October 7, 274 voters and 111 candidates across Canada have signed up. The newspaper quotes Jennifer advocating for the creation of “tools outside of government that give a window on what’s happening inside, and provide incentive and visibility for [government] to modernize their (information technology) systems.”

Re BANNING AOL IPs and the trolls who hide behind them.
As a former moderator, I would suggest this site’s admins to go ahead and do it. I’m aware of the rule regarding it, from back when people used AOL for everything. Times have changed. It’s been a long time since people used AOL as their primary ISP. Everybody has their own broadband these days, so the solution for anybody concerned (like the trolls) is for them to just launch a normal browser.

Moderators, go ahead and ban the AOL IPs when they abuse this site. They’re abusing AOL and do not rely on the service to get here.

also says that as many have stated before that the democrats(pelosi) and 7110 is the reason we do not have an unemployment extension, I am sick of politicians playing games with our lives for votes.

There are as many posts on here ABOUT the trolls as there are BY the trolls. You people just don’t understand; if you respond to them, you’re only encouraging them. There will be no IP banning or any such nonsense; i don’t see why you’d want that anyway. An open forum with trolls is far preferable to a closed forum of a few registered people who all agree and just reinforce each others’ opinions.

Though if moderators are considering banning anyone, they should ban not only trolls but also the people who respond. They’re equal parts of the problem (such as it is).

I’ve been coming on this site for months now, and this is the first time I have responded. I have to sift throught pages and pages of nonsense everytime I come here to find anything useful. I always ignore it but this time I lost my temper.
