This is old news (about a possible second stimulus package), but the excerpt below does mention the name of Sen. Reid’s spokesperson. It’s possible he would know more than the staff people who answer Reid’s phones…in case anyone cares to call him. His name is Jim Manley.
“A Senate GOP leadership aide said Republicans are skeptical of a second stimulus but did not suggest there is outright opposition to another package.
Jim Manley, a spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nevada, left the door open to the Senate taking up a bill.
“Sen. Reid tried to pass a second economic recovery bill last month, only to be obstructed by Senate Republicans,” Manley said. “Recent developments only reinforce the need for additional action to reinvigorate the economy. Republicans are trying to block a second attempt at a Stimulus Package including unemployment benefits extension.
People let’s keep up the pressure on McConnell and the Senate. Here is a email address to the Louisville Courier Journal. McConnell’s hometown paper. I have been sending them articles and writing in about this issue. I got a reply back and said they are looking into it and might put something in the paper next week about it. McConnell does not want his name in this paper about UE it will destroy what’s left of his chances for re-election. So please write this newspaper and share your stories whether you are from KY or not even if it’s a letter to the editor format. They might print it. Also continue to call his office and let them know you have contacted the media including this paper and used his name. Fight fire with fire.. Keep calling him.

Disappointing to click thru and see that that same story has been posted her about 20 times on previous pages. Though you are keeping it front and center with the repost. I am a DEM, so keep that in mind when I say this: To state that the Republicans are ‘trying’ to block a second stimulus is not quite it. The Republican aide said that they would not dismiss it out of hand but that the question that needed to be asked is whether the package is truly stimulative. That differs significantly from the spin you put on it (that the Repubs are more or less rabidly and unanimously opposed). Of course the bill will meet with some resistance. But I think less so than during that last week in Sept., first week in October, due to all that has happened since. Some top economist (Nouriel Roubini) are calling for a stimulus asap, along with lots of other govt. interventionist measures that he says are critical to stabilizing the financial markets and the economy. Teh current environment may be the ‘big scare’ that the White House needs to sing a different tune about a stimulus.

even after her husband nearly lost his senatorial career for ‘lobbying’ on Keating’s behalf before a senate banking regulatory committee, cindi and her father, jim hensley, maintained their partnership in a Keating real estate project for the next 11 years. when they sold, they netted tens of millions of dollars in pure profit, as well as significant tax deductions during that time based a real estate depreciation loophole (a loophole now closed). in short, cindi made out like a bandit on an asset that somehow managed to survive Keating’s bankruptucy proceedings, even though the old and infirm who made smaller investments in Keating deals got shafted. they lost it all worse, Keating sold these investments to the ‘little people’ at Lincoln Savings and Loan so that it would appear they were insured by the F.D.I.C. now ponder all the monetary benefits that would come her way if john were elected president. tsk, tsk.
Apparently you weren`t paying attention to the actual debate and vote process in the July u/i extensions . The republicans NEVER would have gone along with the u/i extensions and only did so because it was attached to a war supplemental .They fought that tooth and nail every step of the way .One thing i will say for the republicans ,they hate the little guy and they aren`t afraid to tell you that .
No, I did follow that battle. In this instance, I was taking what that Republican aide said at face value, which is that they have not ruled out a stimulus. Since UE will be part of that, perhaps it stands a chance. The way you put it, Pelosi is wasting her and everyone else’s time, because its a done deal that the Republicans will block it in the Senate. If so, we need a majority vote in the House. Think that’s right…if not, perhaps you can enlighten me.
Imagine how great our economy would be right now if Congress and Bush had split that 700 billion ‘+’ to the american people? I am no mathmetician but I am estimating it would maybe be in the 50,000 range per family. That would allow people to catch up their mortgages, businesses would prosper bc people would actually be buying from them, which may lead to more jobs, people would be paying on their credit cards and maybe even splurging on a few luxuries,,,How great would that be for our economy,,,but no, they blew it all on Wallstreet and it sure isn’t helping them, seems to be would of helped “mainstreet” more and then maybe would of helped Wallstreet.
sounds good, but in practice doesn’t hold water. without central bank’s intervention in the financial markets, we would have no economy left right now. look what is happening even WITH their intevention! there’s still a lot of work to do. as one leading economist put it: we are on the verge of a system financial collapse, unless all G8 leaders AND emerging market leaders can come up with a specific multi-part action plan, and get it done ASAP. the markets are tanking on fear, and they are waiting to hear the specifics of the governments’ plans before Asian markets open Monday. we shall see.
you say, let them fail — give the money to me. but every single thing we do — borrow, spend, jobs creation — is all tied to a stable financial system and a stable dollar. even if you are not IN the stock market, you are still affected every single day by that system. the stabilization of our entire society is at stake. you would have that 50K, but you would have no bank to go to to borrow to buy a home. you would have no lender willing to give you an auto or student loan. your credit card company would cut you off and demand immediate full payment of the balance. your bank would send you a notice stating that it no longer had the funds to stay in business, due to the run on its accounts. agribusiness would go out of business without access to credit. in very short order, grocery stores shelves would be stripped bare and there would be no more food in the pipeline. then, you and every body else could revert to what we were doing before central banks were established, and that is to put our cash or trinkets or barter beads in a hiding place, and plant and harvest crops to survive. and hope for the best.
what we (we’re all in this together) did for the financial system was necessary. do i like it? hell no! am i mad about it. YES. because apparently this was preventable. i would like to see some people prosecuted. but i can handle the 2,300 per person extra debt that that bailout is costing me. it’s not unmanageable.
would i like to have that 50K? YES. but i am under no illusions about what letting the financial markets fail would mean for our country.
for now, we can do the next best thing, which is get that 150 billion stimulus through. it’s not 700 billion, but it’s a lot. and a good start. and for ‘us’, not wall street.
This is an outrage! I am disabled and not able to work, I have to pay income tax on my support and it is taxed twice. This is not how I want my tax dollars spent! Please do the right thing and fire the person responsible at AIG for this “splap in the face” to the poor people who have been laid off, lost their homes, lost their retirement, an lost their hope for the future!
If you are disabled then why speak on this forum? If you are drawing unemployment benefits, then clearly you are guilty of fraud. Spare your outrage, it’s people like you the Republicans use to vote down unemployment extensions.
Just because he’s disabled does not mean he does not want to work or cannot, he may just be disabled from a certain type of job – lifting or whatever.

On the other hand, by attempting to pass legislation next month, Democrats would have to negotiate with President Bush, whose term runs until Jan. 20, 2009. Additionally, Senate Republicans, with 49 seats, could block any measure they opposed.
