Senate Must Act Right Away to Expand Jobless Benefits

The nation is experiencing what is widely described as the sores financial crisis since the Great Depression. No one knows ho much worse the situation will get, though everyone expects job losses and unemployment to rise considerably before the economy turns the corner.

In rare bi-partisan fashion, the House of Representatives has sent the message loud and clear to the Senate that it must enact the extension of jobless benefits before more workers find themselves struggling to support their families due to the economic downturn without any means of federal support.

Presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama is a co-sponsor of the Senate measure to expand EUC benefits, while Senator John McCain has not taken a position in support of the Senate proposal to expand jobless benefits. Meanwhile, the White House, in response to repeated questioning of Press Secretary Dana Perino, refused to take a position supporting the measure that passed the House of Representatives (White House Press Briefing, dated October 8, 2008).

The Senate will be returning November 17-19th for a brief lame-duck session. Between now and then, every effort should be made to ensure that the Senate considers and passes legislation that would extend unemployment benefits as was done in the House of Representatives in order to address the severe hardship faced by record numbers of unemployed workers.

No. My husband was planning on retiring after over 30 years of very hard work but went back when I lost my job. He is working 600 miles away from home you do what you have to do. If and when you grow up you may or not get it. I’m guessing you never will. Now go put your pimple cream on and take your pills.

30 years in a union job..seems you got $$$$..enjoyed your life huh? welcome to the real world honey!

OK…We spent a page talking about unions here. We are getting a little off track, with all the new news today. The unions are backing us, love them or hate them, they ARE helping us get an extension.

We need to work on putting pressure on the Senate, so when they come back, they can not ignore us.

Good lord it seems like the gov’t has been blowing money like it’s going out of style, but forgot us!!! Is there a way that they can get called back for an emergency vote? They’re just campaigning, I can’t think of a better way to gather votes for cryin out loud.

  • Anonymous 10/17/2008 4:23pm

What makes you think the are going to pass it when they come back ..especially the Senate ..when some of them might have been voted out ..I have a bad feeling it’s not going to pass until Jan

I hear what your saying and you might be right. The republicans just might be so upset about losing big time in the elections that they will try to stop the government from doing anything until they’re replaced. There is another possibility though.

If the elections are a landslide and i am talking huge democrat victories then they might go with the tide of the nation in a attempt to save what left of their political careers. If the nation is calling for changes that might listen. Not to help us mind you but to help themselves. There is life after losing a election if you play your cards right and they know it. But like i said, you may be right.

If they knew we would run out the 1st of Oct ..they would have passed it before they left ..they didn’t
I don’t see them passing it when they get back “a new economic rescue plan” It’s been mention ..that some republicans in the Senate are against it ..and so is Bush.
So that leaves waiting until Jan…

We need passage of extended unemployment benefits asap, the senate needs to look at the hardship that millions of americans are experiencing who have exhausted their benefits…Congress should reconvene and pass this as soon as the election is over…this should have happened before they all left…
