Please send your stories to Jackie, people, She really is really trying to, and will help with the extension. She helped before more than you will ever know.
Please excuse my ignorance on this, but how will the long term unemployed qualify for another extension? Let’s say you were laid off October 31, 2007. That qualified you for the initial 6 months and the additional 13 weeks. Once the extension is exhausted, and you have not generated any other income other than UI, then you are S.O.L. for another extension or even to apply for a new claim, no?
Any “extension” is just added on to your original claim. Some people may be eligible for a second “benefit year” depending on your situation and the state you live in. It is worth asking your state labor agency about it. You may be eligible. The laws vary by the state.
To explain that better,
A second “benefit year” would be like you could collect all over again just like you did when you originally started collecting in the beginning of your unemployment. It is possible in some states.
Thank you very much for responding OOT. I didn’t realize the extensions followed state law since the last extension is being paid with federal funds, I guess? Very confusing stuff, at least for me.
But again, thank you for your kind response.
This is really great. Made me laugh so hard:

I was laid off in 2007 April. I drew regular unemployment until October, just got the extension in July. How will I be able to draw the second 7 weeks if my extension expires in a few weeks? UE in MI.

Well we got the last one passed and surely this one will pass also. It has been a long fight but one well worth all that we went through for months. Now we are continually struggling for a just cause for our right to survive during this turbulent time. We will prevail!!
The thing that sucks is they should have made the extension 26 weeks for the hardest hit states, I’m in a state where the numbers are above 8.5% and aren’t getting any better. Some of us here have been out of work for over a year now, when they get around to passing another extension we will be out of luck.
I’m just worried about Congress dealing with this issue before they break for the elections. You know how long it takes them do things. I’d like to have a Merry Christmas this year.
