AN OPEN LETTER TO ALL MEMBERS
OF THE UNITED STATES HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
ON
THE RECOVERY OF U.S. NAVAL AVIATOR REMAINS
FROM THE GEORGE ONE CRASH IN ANTARTICA
The 2.3 million members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States and our auxiliaries request your active support and co-sponsorship of H. Con. Res. 301, which encourages the Department of Defense (DOD) to recover the remains of three U.S. naval aviators killed in a plane crash in Antarctica.
On December 30, 1946, a Martin Mariner PBM-5 seaplane named the George One with a crew of nine lifted off from the Antarctic Sea to photograph and map the Antarctic coastline, as part of Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd’s expedition named Operation Highjump. Unfortunately, four hours into the flight the aircraft crashed, killing three members of the crew; Ensign Maxwell A. Lopez (RI), Aviation Machinist Mate First Class Frederick Warren Williams (TN), and Aviation Radioman First Class Wendell K. Hendersin (WI). The deceased crewmembers were buried by the six survivors in a temporary grave under one of the aircraft’s wings. Although the survivors were rescued, the bodies of the dead aviators were unable to be retrieved. Today the three remain buried under 150 feet of snow and ice.
We now have the technology to locate and recover the remains of these three naval aviators, so it’s time to bring them home. Our nation must not turn its back on the families who long for the return of their loved ones.
I thank you in advance for your anticipated support of H. Con. Res. 301 and for your continued interest on issues affecting our military veterans. We look forward to working with Congress to ensure this measure is enacted and DOD supports this recovery effort so the remains of Ensign Lopez, Aviation Machinist Mate Williams, and Aviation Radioman Hendersin can be returned to their families for a proper burial.
It is the solemn duty of our nation to not leave a fallen comrade behind.
