Can anyone help us or see what’s going on?

My wife and I, Once happy middle class citizens are now both unemployed in Oregon due to lay offs, poor economy. I never thought our country could get this bad financially. It brings me to tears. An extension of benefits would buy me a little more time in hopes that we can find work before things get unthinkably worse for my family. I would rather have a job than an extension but I don’t know where else to look. No one is hiring and even the positions that pay half of what I used to make, do not want to take a chance on hiring someone that will leave for more money eventually. For one opening, companies are getting thousands of applications. I am 43 and I do not remember a time that our country was in this bad of shape financially.

My husband and I have both been layed off in the past four months and have been diligently but unsuccessfully looking for work. Our unemployment compensation doesn’t even pay for our fixed expenses and we are withdrawing from savings every month to live. My benefits expire in six weeks and I don’t know what we’ll do without those to get us through until we find employment. Please extend these for hard working, motivated Americans to get through this dire period.

as far as I can tell: HR 6867 will provide 20 more weeks unem.+ raise benefit by $50 and will not have a waiting week. Im not very good at searching these things but that is what I have gleamed. The bill is in some committee somewhere I believe. Am hoping they get their asses in gear; I cant even find anywhere to even apply anymore.

JHM I’m from New Jersey. On November 28, 2008, I received a letter from the State of New Jersey department of Labor and Workforce Development.
The notice advised me that I maybe eligibile for seven additional weeks of Extended Unemployment Compensation 2008 program benefits beginning November 23, 2008. The new legislation does not allow any retroactive EUC benefit payments for any period between your exhaustion date and November 22, 2008.I’m to receive a new EUC monetary determination by mail no later than December 19, 2008, the instructions on how to claim your EUC benefits on the Internet at www.njuifile.net or by telephone.

Bush opposed extensions of unemployment benefits which would have been included with the economic stimulus package.
    There will be no extensions.

Stimulus package too far too late for the people who really need it, damage is already done to credit worked hard to build.

Yeah, me too….. however I am sure all is cozy and warm at the Whitehouse!!

I worked for years to get my home, and all the equity, GONE!!

I cannot even get a basic job to make ends meet, I am overqualified!! For what?? I want to work, and keep my house, but NO!!

Some one else will enjoy your house as much as you did. Like someone enjoyed my house two years ago when i lost it after going thru all my savings and 401K, and still owe the government for the taxes on the 401K to stay alive. The people that took my house are now out of that house due to no work also. So either the rich will keep getting rich by taking our homes or the government will step in and give us this unemployment extension we need. I am out of work again and broke. I will have to move to Washington soon and live on the steps and eat the crumbs left behind from Congress. Our government does’nt help single men. I wish I could get Pregnate and get everything Free. Oh I forgot, I am a Man.

Don’t pin the pregnant women for benefits. You can thank those who gave it away to the illegals.

I am a single-white female born here and my family been here since the Revolutionary war!! I am facing hardships myself. I have been sued by Morgan&pottinger aka LNVN funding for credit card debts. and If I can’t pay they will take my personal property or my home away!!

The president and congress gave the bankers money and hope for another trickle down event. How about that money be given to us taxpayers to pay for our homes and pay bills so these rich fat cats don’t keep on getting richer off of us.

Thanks Mr president and congress for allowing our jobs to go oversees and lowering our standard of living to third world standards!!!!

My unemployment runs out in 3 weeks, are there any talks that the unemployment will be extended in the near future, or is it a dead issue now? I live in an area where unemployment is high. Its been hard to find a job. If I loose my unemployment before I find a job, I may be out on the street.

I know how you feel. I have not interviewed for any job that had less than 100 resumes submitted!

I’m in the same position in Northern NJ. Something is very wrong out there. I’ve submitted about 100 resumes and not one phone call. Good luck.

A lot of us have run out of unemployment benefits. My area is which has had its housing related industries devastated by the mortgage problems. So the unemployment here is high.

Based on conversations with others who have been unemployed for months, I’m guessing that Baby Boomers are in for a long haul. Our local paper recently contained an article titled “Retaining the Talented Young”.

  • Anonymous 02/18/2008 9:55am

I don’t think the issue is dead, it just didn’t get in with the stimulus package. I think they are going to revisit it. It is my hope as well – my benefits end in a month. I’ve never been this long without a job in 20 years. Very frustrating that they didn’t include it in the stimulus package.

I have been laid off of my job after 29 years of working for a company, and because of my age 57 it will take longer for me to find a job. I really hope that this bill gets passed so that I can have help supporting my family and paying the utility bills. I have been tracking it, and am frustrated that not more has been done with it. It also seems to me that it is taking at least a year for people 57 and older to find quality work. I think these are issues that politicians need to know.

**When you go gray, they want you to go away….. SO help us if that is the case, because we have famalies and children to support. I personally have been paying into the system since I was 15. REach back and extend my unemployment benefits.

I am a social worker and most utility companies have plans if you do not have an income. CALL them and also check with you Community Action agency and call your state Department of Development for help.

I know how you feel, older workers have a very hard time finding employment. I have worked in the building industry for the last 10 years, here in Calif it is a dead deal we are totally dried up. The bank where I worked was bought out and lay off have been going on since 08/2007. I was in the 1st group, management. Now my benefits have been exhausted and I keep hoping something will happen, I turn 61 in April but still have an active brain function. I need that extension.

  • Anonymous 02/18/2008 4:54pm

REACH BACK AND ALLOW UNEMPLOYMENT TO BE COLLECTED BY THOSE WHOSE BENEFITS HAVE RUN OUT. IF PEOPLE HAVE NOT WORKED SINCE LAST MAY AND THEIR BENEFITS HAVE RUN OUT, AND THEY ARE STILL NOT ABLE TO FIND WORK, ALLOW THEM A TEMPORARY EXTENSION OF UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS.

This bill was blocked by the republicans with the help of Nancy Pelosi. I was thinking of voting republican if there was a good candidate for President. This has switched my position to straight democrat. I hope that eveyone out there whos benefits will end will find jobs. It’s getting harder everyday. Good luck.

  • Anonymous 02/19/2008 7:23am

So is there still hope that unemployment benefits may be extended? Or is this a dead deal? I just ran out of my benefits and it’s getting scary!
