The country is broke, trillions in debt, they eat grass and roam free and they have grass and are roaming free, why try to feed them cake and put them in a barn. When is enough wasted $$, enough $$$? they have what they need and there are to many of them already.

nodakrider – You have it exactly backwards. If this bill passes the horses WILL be left alone and save tax payers millions. What we’re paying for is having the BLM round them up and put them in holding pens – forever. This has cost tax payers billions of dollars over the years with no end in sight unless we can get this legislation passed.

There are hardly “too many” of them. The BLM has just about “managed” them into extinction – and spent our tax money to do it.

Maybe you should READ the bills before you comment on them.

This bill needs to be passed to protect our wild horses from slaughter and set more humane wild horse management policies. This bill will save tax dollars as well as wild horses.

I agree with the sections stating horses should be assured to not be used for slaughter or commercial purposes in adoption, however the US government does not need to spend cash in tracking and R&D of the horses and defintely doesn’t need to waste cash for expanding horse sanctuary acreage, There are plenty of wildlife reserves already in existance that can support the wild horses. Introduce them into already owned wild life preserves rather than aquire new ones dedicated to horses.

You missed the point too! See my post above. The bill will make the BLM leave the horses mostly alone and SAVE tax payer money. NO ONE have even considered R&D, and the land is not a “sanctuary.” It is PUBLIC LAND. WE the American people own it! The bill restores those acres of this public land where the BLM has illegally removed the horses. Good grief!

    READ the bills before commenting.

I think this bill is a good idea; especially the contraceptive part. I think this program has needed to be re-vamped for a while. I’m only hesitant because the nation really does not need to be spending this kind of money at the moment. If we hadnt have had the trillion of dollars spent on bailouts, then maybe we could do this. But right at this moment, I think this bill should wait for a better national economic atmosphere.

You didn’t read the bill either. This bill SAVES tax money, not spends more!

Why do we need for the Federal Government to spend tax dollars on this bill? While I want to see the Mustangs saved from slaughter, there are other ways to do this. Before our government was so determined to run every aspect of this country, independent groups used to form to raise money and accomplish the things that the group was interested in without federal involvement. That did work for this country and did not take tax dollars from the poor & middle class, who already cannot afford these taxes! We used to be a county that could take care of ourselves and our interests without Big Brother’s intervention except in National Crises. Thanks to our government & its insatiable appetite for tax money, those of us who wish to help others and animals can no longer afford donations to do so. We don’t need this bill. We need less government & less taxes.

Let them lie and die as nature intended. Man cannot do a better job than God.

This must be liberal legislation, they can’t find enough ways to waste money.

Shelly Berkley voted YES on this and every other bill that costs money.

In the words of Obama, “We are in the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.” At least before he recently sarted saying “we underestimated this recession.”

The humane thing to do would be to provide birth control and/or abortions to these horses. If it’s good enough for humans, then it’s good enough for horses! How’d you feel about partial birth abortion on a cute, little, almost born, mustang pony?

The country is in trillions in debt. We pay an estimated 26 BILLION a month in INTEREST on the money we owe. We must STOP spending, fix our budget, regenerate revenues, and then we can talk about protecting horses.

HR1018 is trying to find some reasonable management plan for free roaming equines in the US. The Feds have spent MILLIONS rounding them up and holding them. Many in support of this bill want the Act of 1971 restored to it’s state before it got RAPED by Burns-MT. You want to talk about saving money? Invest in decent science and management. Everything costs money, some are worth it….preservation of open wild spaces (and that doesn’t include cows and sheep, loggers or miners!!!!) for America does. (con’t)

    Pass HR 1018 into LAW!

  • coeurdefer 07/22/2009 2:30pm

(con’t) Let’s see, about 2,000,000 in 1900 and now down to 16-20,000 (free roaming…and that’s questionable because of the moving of herds, poor population methodolgy, etc) and 30,000+/- in holding. Yeah, you folks against this bill are informed, subject matter experts and are certainly beating the snot out of the wild equines based on my math. Hey, where’s the complaint about the money the Feds and States spent rounding them up, warehousing them and the poor collection of revenue for mining, logging and ranchers using public lands???? Nonexistent!

Pass HR1018 to and through the Senate and then to LAW!

Well, you’re closer to the others, but still missing the point that this bill will SAVE millions, not SPEND millions more.

  • MorganLvr 12/31/2009 5:48am

I already have. Thank god this bill has already passed. I hope you folks above have educated yourselves and will pressure the Senate to pass their version.

@MorganLvr, all those people commented long before you posted anything. I agree with you, these people didn’t actually read the bill. They do not realize that the BLM has been slowly taking away the public lands that were designated for the Mustangs in order to graze cattle. Ranchers have taken control of the BLM once again and they have been making the same arguments against Mustangs since the inception of the BLM. They have created this fake “surplus” of Mustangs by removing too many of them and putting them into so called sanctuaries. It is sad that they have succeeded in making people think there are too many Mustangs when in reality the BLM has been stealing the land set aside for them.

  • silverfang77 05/10/2010 6:00am

I support this bill because I believe mustangs and wild burros have a God-given right to roam freely without the fear of harassment by people. GW Bush did a real number when he signed legislation stripping these animals of their federal protection in 2005. Why? So the land could be cleared for the commercial interests of drilling and mining.

Also, the cattle grazing. I forgot about the most obvious one. The bottom line is the government works for the corporations who want the mustangs and burros removed, rather than for the people who want them left alone.
