A card-carrying member of the tin-foil hat brigade.
Rahm Emmanuel
Is a traitor to AMERICA, He has never served in the USA military( he was born in USA). He did enlist in the Isreali Military and fought their war, why should we support a Traitor like Rahm Emmanuel and Obama is the biggest Traitor of them all for signing this bill in the first place.
Your *adult* child has the choice whether or not to engage in any activity they want. If he chooses to do a year of service for his country, he can do it through americorps.gov. As a VISTA, I recommend it (Volunteers In Service To America):
"Each VISTA makes a year-long, full-time commitment to serve on a specific project at a nonprofit organization or public agency. In return for their service, VISTAs receive a modest living allowance & health benefits during their service, & have the option of receiving a $4725 Education Award or a $1200 stipend after completing their service. VISTA members do not provide direct services, such as tutoring children or building homes. Instead, they focus their efforts on building the organizational, administrative, and financial capacity of organizations that fight illiteracy, improve health services, foster economic develop, & otherwise assist low-income communities. VISTAs develop programs to meet a need, write grants, & recruit & train volunteers."
So I missed the section where it says the govt. will choose what volunteer programs your children will be required to participate in without your approval.
Which section is it?
So you don't want your kids to earn college money this way. Fine. They can work at McDonalds, get loans or mommy can foot the bill.
"So you don't want your kids to earn college money this way. Fine. They can work at McDonalds, get loans or mommy can foot the bill."
Who do YOU think will pay for this bill?
It is us middle class taxpayers with our own kids, and our own college costs to pay (continuing education in night school).
People (of all ages) can always volunteer. I was a volunteer fire fighter for 8 years.
Why won't they pay these a minimum wage. Why is this bill going through after being at OC for a day?
The mandatory service will be Ike the military in WW1, they will all have to sue for rights. Obama is a lawyer and wants you to.
When you figure in the education award it is more than minimum wage. Most of the participants are fresh out of college and don't have huge expenses such as car payments, a mortgage, children, etc. It's completely manageable.

Obama is not a lawyer anymore. According to the State of Illinois, he retired after the election.
And you believe that one stops thinking in a particular capacity, which was ones life's profession, especially that of a lawyer? I do believe that was what NAT meant.
Antipoverty program? This is a poverty program.
People choose to do this in order to get money for school at the end of their service term. They can use the education award to pay off loans which were in forbearance during their service term. Not everyone has the skills required to live off meager wages, and it's not hidden from program participants - so anyone who does it knows full well what they're getting themselves into.
This bill makes service learning hours mandatory for secondary schools (Section 120b3b) and funds a study to determine if mandatory volunteer service for all young people can be developed. (Section 6104b6) This bill as written makes volunteer hours mandatory for children in public school and funds exploring the idea of expanding mandatory service for all young citizens. So mandatory service is certainly in this bill as currently written, unless a child attends a private school or is home schooled.
You need to brush up on your reading comprehension skills.
That is NOT what 120b3b says.
It is talking about coordinating service learning opportunities where 90% or more students already participate or service-learning is already mandatory.
In 120(3) it does state
Sec. 1203)
(3) Involving high school age youth in the mentoring of middle school students. Authorizes new Summer of Service programs under which students who will be entering grades 6 through 12 at the end of the summer and complete 100 hours of community-based service learning summer projects become eligible for an educational award of up to $500 from funds deposited in the National Service Trust.
What many do not understand is that Authorized is the same as Mandatory in the definition.
Containing or constituting an authorization and/or command.

My son worked at a fast food restaurant, while getting paid, for the summer and received scholarship money from his employer for his education. In fact, he paid for two years of his college this way and had a little bit of money to add to the economy. Let the American people do what they do best, work hard, create innovative incentives, freely volunteer their time and resources. It is not the government's responsibility to do this. This particular bill outlines where students, veterans, and retirees will be serving and for how long. We do not need layer upon layer of government programs...that is not their role.

He worked for Chick~Fil~A! I'd say it happens every day, other fast food chains offer the same thing.

Section 120b3b states:
"service-learning is a mandatory part of the curriculum in all of the secondary schools served by the local educational agency." This is taken directly from the bill so it is not paranoia. This is forced service and not volunteering. It must be stopped!

Learn to read.
Read Bill H.R.1444. It explains very well what they want to do. But of course they must study how to do it first by setting up the commission in H.R.1444.
Oh yeah, H.R.1444 does talk about creating, expanding and promoting service options for Primary and Secondary School students, oh, and college students, and a 4-year institute with a focus on training future public sector leaders, and don't forget service among the "baby boomer" generation.
And do not forget, a quote directly from the Bill:
"Whether a workable, fair, and reasonable mandatory service requirement for all able young people could be developed"
Wrong. This is mandatory and it's unconstitutional. You have no right trying to come in here and spew out garbage to make Hitler's Youth Program sound palatable. America is not going to stand for this.
Play by play:
>>"Wrong. This is mandatory and it's unconstitutional."
I don't see any argument here.
>>"You have no right trying to come in here and spew out garbage to make Hitler's Youth Program sound palatable."
I think discussing the bill is the entire point of this forum, and of our right to free speech. I mean, clearly, you are free to make Hitler references.
>>"America is not going to stand for this."
The Serve America Act already has solid bi-partisan support. (http://www.opencongress.org/bill/111-s277/show) This bill is really just a corollary to that one. It's discouraging really to me to see such bi-partisanship and name calling expressed here on an issue of supporting and rewarding volunteerism. I'd like to think we're moving past this as a nation.
If you think partisanship was over, it started up again right after Obama went into office. The first thing Pelosi did was get rid of the right for the minority in Congress to amend bills and you want to talk to me about getting over it?
Since they took over, they have made us broke and plan to put us into debt indefinitely. They want a police state and that's what this is. They want to indoctrinate your children with programs without your permission. They want to put everyone to work for them and then.....
We see a bailout with AIG, another scam. Obama and Geitner KNEW what bonuses those execs were getting and still, they approved it. Now they are acting like they are outraged, when even the execs are saying they knew all about the contracts. #1 on the list of receiving $100K from AIG funds was Dodd and #2, was Obama.
My child is my child, not the government's. I'm sorry that you feel I don't have a right to that opinion, but the Constitution says I do.
Um...solid bi-partisan support does not represent America...unfortunately.
Man, you need to loosen that tin-foil hat!
With school this pay $3.16 an hour. I think it's wrong to pay poverty wages to poverty programs.
