This is going to be highly beneficial to America..the numbers in favor of passing the bill are staggering..the # of patents, publications, and faculty that the highly skilled immigrant community contributes to, on a yearly basis, is indicative of their impact on our technology / economy..If USA needs to stay ahead of the pack, this is a key piece of legislation that needs to happen, and happen quickly…

America does not have PhD shortage as big business claim.
Look at PhD wage at Arizona State Univ: 35,000 yr. At this wage, American kids are smart enough not to pursue their careers in STEM.

Here are some facts.
1. We, the USA has (atleast till date) an edge because of it’s technological advancements and PhDs add to that advancements. If anyone thinks that a country can prosper without technology, we will be dragging ourselves behind. World is not waiting for us. Other countries are encouraging people with higher education to come to their countries.
2. 35000 yr is mostly for postdocs. This is just like saying physicians make 45000 yr just because intern physicians make that much. Will that be a correct statement?

35K per year is a stipend…not a salary..

PhD graduates typically do a post doc before they move on to take up jobs in the academia and the industry…

at the tech firm where I work, we regularly hire PhDs who are both US nationals and foreign nationals..and a typical offer is upwards of USD 120K per year (without including annual bonuses and stock-options)

you make advanced education seem like a joke..These individuals are willing to sacrifice 8-10 years to achieve excellence in their field..and they play a vital role in keeping this nation competitive..nobody is making a case against doing something similar for immigrants in the army…please try to stay on topic…
