Actually, the world outside the U.S. is starting to question the validity of man-made global warming (see the Wall Street Journal article linked above). I agree, we need to stop funding Saudi Arabia, but this bill is not the answer. The environmental impact of wind farms and solar farms capable of producing enough power to replace coal-fired plants is at least equal to coal mining. Why is clean nuclear power not included in this bill? Why can’t we drill for oil here? Yes, it will take 10 years to see results, but wind and solar will also take time to develop. Why can’t we let our free markets do the work of finding better sources of energy? The government doesn’t need to be funding this.

I really appreciate the change in your tone. Thank you! I will check out Friedman’s book.

I have a question — what does Cognress mean about geologic sequestration of carbon emissions?

On CSPAN Now. Debating HR 2454. Republicans are asking for over 300 additional pages of this legislation that was added overnight. Dems will not produce a copy of the additional pages.

We, the People of the United States, Should Be Taxed for Global Warming Which Doesn’t Exist In Fact?? We, The Peple of the United States, Should Transfer BILLIONS of Dollars Overseas to Appease the United Nations Because We Are A Productive Nation??

As Adolph Hitler said 0ver 70 years ago, “The broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily; and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds, they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods. Therefore, make the lie big, make it simple, keep saying it, and eventually they will believe it. What good fortune for governments that the people do not think.”

God Help Us All!

Really this is just like every other government. There’s the reason they claim to be doing it, and the reason they’re really doing it. They say that it’s to curtail greenhouse gases and reduce global warming, but it’s really just a way to increase taxes, increase taxes, reward friends, and punish enemies.

Read this article to see how monumentally government energy policies fail. http://www.thenation.com/doc/20090420/hayes

lolmao500 06/25/2009 7:45pm

Water vapor in the air is also a greenhouse gas. We should ban it too! And tax it!

Let’s tax air and water… we already tax the earth. Next we’re gonna tax fire? The 4 elements taxed?

This is so ridiculous and SICK.

augrad1996 06/26/2009 3:56am

This bill is a tax on ALL Americans including those making under 250K which the President said he would not do. Also, there is disagreement among scientists that global warming is actually real. Why are we trying to fix something that may not be happening? MONEY maybe???? It seems like Pelosi, Gore and GE will see huge increases in wealth if this bill passes.

Hey everybody, the House is now debating this legislation as a substitute amendment, under H.R. 2998: http://www.opencongress.org/bill/111-h2998/show

BERNARDBUCKMAN 06/25/2009 10:22am

I am with all who are against this bill——this would be a travesty if it were to pass. Our economy is suffering enough and there has been nothing but injustice done to our American workforce. Why can’t we learn from our foreign friends who have already tried and failed on some of these programs that are being shoved down our throats? Americans need to take care of America!

Instead of passing this Energy Tax Bill, how about The United States Government stop being invovle with energy development and accessibility and work on utilizing the Sterling Steam Engine Technology. In addition to, we should also look into Nano-Flower Technology as a short-term energy output with Sterling as well.

unclejessie 06/29/2009 6:05pm

Refineries will close and move abroad to avoid the carbon credit game. Not only will the labor be cheaper, but the emission standards are also super sweet in the 3rd world. Same goes for any other company who can muster the capital to move abroad. The ones that are stuck here to pay the bill are the small businesses. So yea…this is going to help a ton.

Can we live cleaner…sure…why not. Is this the way to go about doing it…hell no. We Americans like our standard of living. If this “change” cannot happen without impacting our standard of living in a major way, I don’t believe the people will let it fly. Congrats Government. You’ve made a country of lazy people…now you’re going to reap what you sow.

Screw the enviroment reasons.

That article says that temperatures rise by about .36F per year. It also mentions that El Nino could cause exactly that much rise in temperature. Is there an article that proves that carbon emissions is contributing enough to global warming to justify a cap-and-trade method? That method could seriously hamper our economic growth.

katolac 07/03/2009 1:13pm

Global warming????? Tell somebody in Mn or Alaska about global warming in the middle of Feb. What is this admin. trying to do? have us all make our cuts while they scoot around the country or world in their private jets? What a bunch of BS.

Great point. Lost in all the arguments of whether this is a good idea or not is whether congress even has the authority to do it. Unfortunately that doesn’t matter any more. It doesn’t win votes to use the constitution. It works much better to pamper everyone and tell us what we can and can’t do. Eventually they will tell us who we can and can’t vote for.

deborahg6 07/02/2009 2:02pm

Dear Roger Charlet,

Nice copy and pasting of that government web site. There is no comparison to this Cap and Trade legislation to the acid rain legislation. Nice try, though. The cost to our current businesses will be unprecedented and will hurt the poor and dwindling middle class. All based on a “theory”. More than 31,000 respected scientists agree. I’m sorry, Al Gore’s life does not live up to his propaganda. I laugh when liberals call conservatives “fear mongerers”. Mr. Gore wrote the book on fear mongering. I even saw him lie to an audience of thousands, blaming man made fires in Australia on global warming…while they cheered him.

Here’s a great rebuttal to the above propaganda folks.

The bill will impact all of the American middle class for the worse. It will slow or prevent our economic recovery period. In these times America needs cheap energy. What about the impact it will have on trying to sell your house if it does not meet the new standards and your not allowed to sell it before you upgrade. HOW DO YOU SPELL MORE FORECLOSURES?

toolib 06/24/2009 6:28am

i just mailed my congressman from utah. i hope he understands what this is because i heard on Glen Beck that they give more time to talk about post offices (census) than to talk about Cap n Trade.

Does anyone understand why there is so much mayhem in passing so much legislation?

GIANT LOLZ there. If I wish to contribute to charity, I will do so on my own will. Nobody should be federally mandated to contribute to (in this case “the prevention of global warming/climate change/whatever they’re calling it now”) your charity or anyone elses.

You mention “continually rising gas and oil prices” being a source of pain? Just THINK of what will happen when companies have to begin paying this tax. It won’t be just “gas and oil” that will be rising any longer. Need to ship something? Oh noes! The shipping companies are evil because they have an enormous carbon footprint! Your $5.00 shipment just became $15.00. I’m almost certain I won’t have a job any longer as the company I work for is almost certain to either shut down or pack up and move overseas due to the tax they’ll end up having to pay.

This is a solution looking for a problem. I assume the problem will be “Government wants more of our money, how do they get it?”

bmwtriton 10/26/2009 7:02pm

Almost all of the institutions trading permits are owned by Al Gore or Goldman Sachs. This Cap and Trade system is nothing more than government-sanctioned FRAUD. This system is starting to look more and more like a criminal enterprise than a federal program. The biggest proponent of this program was Enron. I wonder why. This bill seems perfect ways for the Mafia, money-laundererers, and terrorist financiers to scam the system and gain easy funding for their nefarious activities. Anyone who administers this program, as well as anyone in Congress who votes for this fraud, should it become law, should be investigated and maybe prosecuted for fraud. These officials could keep Bernie Madoff company.

European countries have tried this system for years. Their carbon emissions have gone up 5% over the last five years, while the emissions from the US have gone down 1% over the same period (without this system). So, even if you buy into the climate change crap, this system will do nothing to benefit the environment (and in fact will do just the opposite). It will do nothing but create a new market for carbon credits (that is, it will create a bunch of Enron’s … who, interestingly enough, was one of the biggest proponents of cap-and-trade before they fell apart).

bmwtriton 07/14/2009 6:47pm

All this bill does is open the way for fraud. It cannot be too hard for a company or individual to manufacture counterfeit permits to either sell or avoid paying the fee to buy a permit.

Also, this is the biggest scam the government has ever come up with. The government will give the permits to those who pay bribes or give campaign contributions. Bernard Madoff would be impressed with this scam.

Drill our own oil, yeah. Destroy thousands of acres of natural habitat, disrupt natural ecosystems, and rape the land even more than we already have, just to prolong our addiction to the most inefficient and dirty fuel out there. And what about when there is no more oil? Where will we be then? I’d rather use the sun’s energy, which will be around for 5 billion more years, or the wind, which has always and will always be blowing, or heat from geothermal vents in the earth’s crust, which will be around as long as we are. Nuclear is a temporary solution, but also a very expensive one. Nuclear power plants are not very efficient and produce many tons of radioactive waste. I’d rather clean up the planet.

“The carbon level in the atmosphere is at an all time high for a period in our planets history in which it was acutally capable of sustaining life…”

Sure, if you don’t include anytime before the ice age….. which was caused by an asteroid/comet hitting the surface of the Earth, throwing it into this erratic cycles of warming and cooling.. You could say that we exist due to an imbalance of weather, not in spite of it. We are still cooling than the Cretaceous period, when life on Earth was drastically reduced by previously mention event.

It seems to me that the only people that support this bill, dont have a whole lot to say other then something bashing the GOP. The people who only look at party affiliation are the problem with this country, they vote for reps. and then the reps. vote for bills according to the way their party wants them too. Last time I checked we were all AMERICANS and should have the best interests of AMERICA in mind regardless of party affiliation. If we dont get back to being strictly AMERICANs this country is done for! P.S. Cap and Trade is just another way to tax the AMERICAN people, it may create green jobs, but the amount of jobs being “created” wont outnumber the amount of jobs lost due to the larger expense of cap and trade. Opportunity costs people, opportunity costs!! Basic economics.

please stop insulting NASA. I recommend you actually read the literature on their website that explores the causes of climate change that they are observing on earth.
http://climate.jpl.nasa.gov/causes/
Here, ON THEIR WEBSITE, NASA states that "On Earth, human activities are changing the natural greenhouse. Over the last century the burning of fossil fuels like coal and oil has increased the concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2). This happens because the coal or oil burning process combines carbon with oxygen in the air to make CO2. To a lesser extent, the clearing of land for agriculture, industry, and other human activities have increased concentrations of greenhouse gases.
