"The Creature From Jekyll Island", 1994
    pg 541 (A Pessimistic Scenario)

The crisis has been a blessing for politicians. They have thrived upon it and grown in stature because of it. It has given them an excuse to swarm through the country on fact-finding trips, to appear in shirt sleeves at town-hall meetings, to give speeches, and to be seen on television- all the time expressing grave concern and appearing to take charge. It has legitimized their role and somehow made them seem more necessary than before. They have been converted in the public eye from oafs and bumpkins to serious-minded statesmen.
The party in power said it inherited the mess. The previous party blamed the current one for dropping the ball. Both parties, however, agreed on the solution: MORE OF EXACTLY THE SAME POLICIES THAT CREATED THE CRISIS: EXPANDED POWER TO THE FEDERAL RESERVE, MORE GOVERNMENT CONTROL OVER THE ECONOMY, MORE SUBSIDIES AND BENEFITS, AND MORE INTERNATIONAL COMMITMENTS. These were called "emergency reforms" and became law. The same men who created the problem prescribed the solution. The public was grateful to have leaders of such vision and wisdom.

Corporations will pay tax for items purchased as well. Everyone pays taxes in this system. It just changes how we're taxed.

PLus you will need to have a sales tax of anywhere between 30 and 45%... Plus 6% sales tax here in MN would make things very expensive.

Please provide sources for this information. MIT has done a lot of research to come up with the 23% inclusive, 30% exclusive rate of being revenue neutral.

It doesn't matter if the government stops collecting the Federal Income Tax. If they want more money all they got to do is go over to the Federal Reserve and get a loan. As soon as the government deposits the loan in a bank that loan becomes new money, diluting the value of the money already in the system. This is inflation, and we pay for it. So we can pay taxes or we can pay for inflation. We pay either way. What we really need to do is end the Fed.

What we really need to do is re-evaluate what the federal government is spending their money on and decide if it's efficient use of our tax money.

Paying federal income tax, is not mandatory but rather voluntary. That's the secret. Research it before you say this is not true. Only business profit and investment gaines are taxable under the entire code. It really doesn't apply to you and me, really. WE just succumb to the fear and contractual agreements we sign (W4's or no job) saying we agree we owe this tax. Soooo given that, why would be want a National Tax that would then be mandatory on the people, I ask?

The best thing to do is have this country America, have it's own banking, printing it's own money, not Fed. res. private banking money charging high interest to America, (of course we wouldn't charge ourselves interest on money we would need to run the country), and allow the rest of the money to come in from where it always came in and that is excise taxes, import taxes etc.

No real need for a mandatory National Tax that would never stay the same but rise and rise and rise.

Please provide legal precedent for this position. I have seen numerous legal cases in which people have been civilly and legally held accountable for not paying FICA taxes, but have not seen a legal precedent where a citizen was found not guilty of tax evasion when they in fact did evade paying taxes.

If it can make Ghietner, Solis, or Rangel pay their taxes, I'm all for it.

This tax would be a great answer, but the raising of taxes under this bill should and must be voted on by the general populous of the UNITED STATES and not by CONGRESS or even the PRESIDENT-it must stay with a GENERAL VOTE for APPROVAL. If not it would take a "HARE'S BREATH" before the rate would be driven through the roof. GOVERNMENT is supposed to work "FOR THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE" therefore the PEOPLE should hold the "PURSE STRINGS" not a Congress that is so far out in "LEFT FIELD".

I agree with you, but we need to remember that we are not a true democracy. In our republic we can only vote for someone to vote for us. Then hope that they vote the way they promised. To do what you say would undermine the constitution and the vision of our forefathers.

A Flat tax would level the playing field. You buy - you pay taxes.

I have supported the Fairtax since its creation. I have constantly told people about it. Generating tax revenue through purchase power is the most viable and neutral method ever introduced. To think that you will have a full paycheck that the government doesn't dip their hands into and the ntelling us it is voluntary, which is a lie. To receive monies back into your account up to the poverty level and based on how much you make, meaning that the more you make, the less the prebate is makes it fair to both the low and high income earner since the low income earner will receive a higher prebate than a top dollar earner. Also, since it is based on income, you can forget about welfare vampires taking money from people who live the real American dream, to progress or decline upon your own initiave and actions.

To add a note about any supposed "Intellectual" who says you are paying the "30%" sales tax. Here is why they are idiots. They are not including the Prebate in their equation and they are not removing the taxes currently taken out of your pay from the equation. I am no Rocket Scientist, but I do know numbers. BTW, counting all the taxes we pay right now, the average is 23%.

The income tax should be repealed only for those who make less than $100k annually. There should be no taxes of any kind of food or clothing. The national tax should be a much lower amount only for those who make $50-$100k annually. However, those who don't pay income or national taxes (or make less than $50k annually) should also not have to file tax returns for the fed or the states; meaning 'no pay--no return' and no EIC credits any more.

An interesting idea, have this VAT tax for the entire populace and visitors, as well as an income tax for those in the top 10% or so of income (anyone who takes home more than $118k a year).

That would address the issue of disproportionate wages between the lowest and highest level income brackets, secure against wage loss after a tax decrease, and help the general welfare of the nation.

Now, that would be a bill worth supporting.

This is a USE TAX - How much fairer can it get? When Steve Forbes ran for President, he had studies done on how a flat would work. At the time, if an 11% national tax was implemented (instead of Income Tax), the National Debt would be erased in 5 to 7 years. Then drop the tax to 7% to keep the existing budget without going into debt. It doesn't get any better than that.

The "Fair Tax" is the only voluntary tax. In resonse to "sspsllc" those that make less than $50K use more of the fed resources than those who make more. All citizens should pay taxes, the only fair way is consumption based, rich people will by more stuff, poor people will by less, period.

The time has come. The tax code is unintelligable to but a few tax experts. Lopholes are rampart for the few. The AMT is a political football used annually to appease the folks at home and doesn't meet it's original objectives. No illegal/under the table monies are taxed at any rate - zilch. An equal and fair tax system could only have one rate for all (above the set/changing level of poverty). The numerous rates in the Tax Code in itself are unfair. The time for change is long overdue. Supporting - TAX BREAKS/DEDUCTIONS - encouraging large families made sense in more egarian times but no more. Do away with ALL DEDUCTONS, throw out the tax code, retrain workers in the IRS and implement a point of sale tax at the same rate for all ( poverty level and below would be exempt). Former IRS employees at a greatly reduced number thru attriton would marshall the new tax system..

The tax system is and always has been a bad idea. Now it's completely out of control and it simply has to stop. Why are the simple ideas always discounted? The fair tax is simple, and it would work, just not to the benefit of "big money". Stand up America!! We have to make this change!

Just remember how many people would be put our of a job by changing our tax structure. Entire industries would be wiped out, which is exactly what we need right now...

bdougherty -- on the contrary, Our current tax structure greatly impedes productivity. For example, the wholesale price of an industrial item manufactured in the US includes 35% corporate income tax. The price of that same item manufactured in Ireland includes only 15%.

No wonder our trade deficit is so high. How can we compete in world markets with equipment that costs 20+%?

The FairTax would eliminate all corporate income taxes (which are really paid by consumers, not by corporations, because they are built into the price of the item).

I do support a federal sales tax, However I think 23% is a little high and wander how they achieved this number. I also think that elderly people how have paid taxes all their lives should be exempt from paying this tax. Simply done by using drivers license or other form of Id. when purchasing, a magnetic strip like used on credit cards would apply the appropriate tax.

How ever I dont agree with ending cooperate income taxes in this matter. Retain cooperate income tax and give cooperations tax breaks for creating new jobs. i.e. a company has 100 employees and creates 10% new jobs (10 new perminate jobs) they receive a tax break. Use this a an incentive to creat new jobs. We all know how bad we need new jobs.
