If we reformed our system of taxation I would be in favor of flat tax, but I've changed my mind on the FairTax. Please, read these articles and realize that taxation is not the problem, it's spending.

The fair tax is recommended as a stepping stone. Yes, it only answers half of the problem. But the answer to other half is already at hand and does not require the passage of any laws beyond the repeals of old ones.
You are right. Spending is the problem, or part of it anyway. So you need to correct that and reform the tax system. There are so many unfair taxes. I think the best way is to use a sales tax. That everyone will pay their fair share and you can effective discount taxes for elderly, disabled, and the military. This would end loop holes and rich people not paying taxes. Everyone will pay a fair amount depending on the amount they spend.
I'm in TOTAL support of this one also!! Can you imagine the increased income that would come from all the ILLEGALLY earned money that would then be taxed?!?! If all cash-under-table income & money being made illegally were to be taxed as it is spent ... MAN!! Tax the money as it is SPENT & NOT the as it is EARNED (honestly) ... and EVERYONE becomes a responsible contributor ... not only those of us who earn our money legally and pay our taxes RELUCTANTLY!!
It's long overdue. How do we the people get support to get this through the system. This type of tax is long overdue; but Obama wants to levy more and more taxes! Fair tax is a good name for this bill, how can I help?
I dont know how we can get this bill moving but I have the book and I am behind this bill. The only reason for a long tax code is to make it easier for people who wrote them to not pay any taxes!! Sound familliar? So how do we get this going? Lets contact our congress people and tell them to vote yes on this already! WE THE PEOPLE are supposed to have the power so if we ALL tell them vote yes or we will fire them, I think after a few weeks they will listen.
Also please find out where the Tax Tea Party is near you and lets get this ball rolling. We are going to meet in citys all over the nation protesting the wastefull spending of this administration. April 15th 2009! Please come ond let your voice be heard!
When the individuals being nominated to be our governmental guides for the next few years find they can't interpret the tax code...that really says something, doesn't it? And of course, why do we even NEED to interpret it anyway? Call the IRS 1-800 number and you are told their phone converations and information are not legally binding. H.R. 25 would even find the crooks paying their fair share for when they made a purchase, they pay a tax. Priceless!
Where are the dollar figures for what dropping the IRS would save?
And yes, for those out there who would say we musn't because that would burden the poor, provide that "credit" card for swiping at the time of purchase allowing no taxes to be collected. Not being used? A monthly minimum is removed and when the allowable untaxed earnings levels are reached, the card is "voided" for the balance of the year and taxes would be collected on all further purchases.
Do it!!
The ONLY way this will ever pass is FIRE everyone in Congress and get some new people in there to work for the people.
I have never agreed with taxing a person's wages. If you offer a service and provide that service, you are due just compensation for that service. Hence, this is not profit at all and should never be confused with profit. If it is equal to the service that you provided, where is the profit? It is a trade; services for finances. There's no profit in that.
Profit is and will always be earnings above and beyond what you've provided. I've yet to see a company that I've worked for give me more than what I've ever earned through services I provide.
The IRS charges more and costs my family more than anything else we pay for. From yearly deductions to figuring out how much I will still owe to paying more to them after they've already taken 25% of my payroll...
C'mon Fair Tax! It is the right thing to do.
Seriously, I hate this time of year. Sitting down and doing taxes. I waste so much time saving receipts and finding source documents. We, as Americans work hard at having our money stolen and burned. We have to do taxes so the kgb I mean IRS can take it from you. The income tax is a waste of time and money.
If your going to steal from me do it in a more simple manner!
This bill has no chance of passage if it includes the repeal of the estate and gift taxes. These are two of the ways we prevent the formation of aristocratic family fortunes. The estate tax will never be replealed.
The estate tax is a double tax...you earn, pay taxes on the earnings and what is left over is taxed again as you die. What you accumulate in life you have already been taxed for....your children and spouses and grandchildren deserve the fruits of your labors, not some out of control government. To believe otherwise is a mindset I'd rather not contemplate.
This has been a long time coming, however, I don't think this mentally-challenged Congress will go for it. So...2010, we vote "those" out.
I can agree with this bill with one exception there's nothing on property taxes. Property tax should be eliminated because it increases rents, increases cost of living, it's based upon values, a developer can buy out your neighborhood and force your tax rates to go up through improvements. We need a system that protects income and maintains a low cost of living so that we can maintain savings and spend on the prosperity of our production.
This is beautiful and a long time coming
All over America, concerned citizens are rallying to tea parties, trying to make their voices heard all the way to Washington. Enough taxation. Let's take back our country.
This bill is EXCELLANT..!!! I don't mind paying property taxes because all that goes back into my county and local government for schools and roads and thing I use.
I am a staunch advocate of tax reform, and I have been a proponent of a flat tax plus a sales tax for years. I only have one problem with this bill. The provision to repeal the bill if Amendment 16 of the Constitution is not repealed with in 7 years of passage, combined with the statement of dissolution of the IRS past 2013/14. What happens to the country if 16 isn't remanded? No IRS, (would be outlawed by this bill) and no tax structure either.......Very Very Dangerous. Historically America has not quickly ratified any Amendment to the Constitution, why should this time be any different? I am the first to agree we need to have a MAJOR T.E.A. party, and reform our tax base to keep in time with the global economy, but it is incumbent upon us to do this responsibly and to eliminate as many "loop-holes" and blind spots as possible....It can be done,,,it SHOULD BE DONE, and this may be the bill to do it,,,it just needs a couple of amendments.
This bill is our only hope to correct all the wrongs we've done to tax policy in the US since 1913 with the introduction of the income tax. Just look at all the other tax legislation being reviewed by ways and means right now. We're at 70,000 pages of tax code and no signs of slowing the complexity are in sight. Even PBO's recent announcement that off-shore tax havens will be pursued adds complexity (and an additional 800 IRS agents) to the current tax code. Let's all support this bill (progressives like me and conservatives alike) and end the madness now, PLEASE!
Support the Fair Tax (www.fairtax.org)
* Allow American products to compete fairly
* Bring transparency and accountability to tax policy
* Ensure Social Security and Medicare funding
* Close all loopholes and bring fairness to taxation
Sounds great! Now, how do we make it reality?
This bill needs to move forward. Right now it is in the House Ways and Means Committee with no scheduled action. Everyone that supports this bill needs to do what me and others on this site have done: Write your representatives in the House and your Senators in the Senate. This is important. The future of our country depends on what we do now. The House and Senate bills will only move if we all unite and start making our voices heard.
Will the FairTax do anything to shrink the size of the federal government? Also, what would stop the politicos from steadily increasing the sales tax rate over time?
While it may not immediately shrink the government's massive size, it is a step toward clearer accountability as to how the government gets funds and how it spends those funds. Also, if the American people can get this bill passed, they will certainly be able to keep the rate from getting raised. The tax situation got as bad as it is because voters became apathetic; this bill could be a drastic shift in the right direction for our country amidst all the bickering between the two parties that in the end amounts to a lot of noise and not much else.
The other day while watching the news they had a segment on the last election here in Ca, and good ole Feinstien and Arny were at the podium during a spech and she said she cannot understand and was dumbfounded as to why props 1-a through1-e did not pass....and she was really serious about it, all would have increased taxes accross the board in some way and would have put the State into a much deeper debt.
She Just Aint Listening To the people...I am done with the IRS and we all should take part into getting this Bill Through, which I believe is very Possible. We cannot sit idley by and let others do the work. I belong to the Fairtax.org group and I am finding other grass roots groups. I print out Literature and I do Post them on Billbords at Stores, post offices, and anywhere else I can tack one up and I do talk with people about it....more to definately come....
Imagine taking home your entire paycheck every payday. Under the Fair Tax, instead of paying out of your paycheck, you pay tax on your spending habits. Those who are frugal, buy second hand (no tax on second hand good) and husband their money do great under this plan. That is the American way. Those who buy new, buy big, live lavishly, pay a 23% tax on those goods and services. And because there are no taxes levied between businesses (business don't pay tax on construction supplies) everyone benefits and the economy gets a boost.
The benefits of this bill are too numerous to cover in a forum post, but for me, the biggest one of all is one of principle. The current system is involuntary and coercive, which effectively makes it armed robbery. But there's never going to be an armed federal agent telling me he will arrest me if I don't buy a new stereo.
Never say never
I love this country, but I DON'T trust this administration. 23% sales tax on everythingwe buy, hmmm. This does include the added value tax, doesn't it? Added value, or hidden value? This way they can tax us with the added ( hidden ) value tax, and we won't even notice, because the tax will be reflected in the cost of product.
SOCIALISM DOES NOT WORK!!! THANKS ANYWAY!!!
Although this tax system is leagues ahead of the current one, the problem in this society is too much government spending. Simply changing the way taxes are collected will do nothing to stop the rediculous waste of the government. Getting rid of income tax and offseting that with an equal drop of government waste would be like rocket fuel for our crippled economy.
This new way to collect the same taxes is more fair, but it doesn't solve the real problem. Therefore I am against it.
That's the dumbest thing I ever heard. If you are for this tax reform as well as spending cuts but won't support it until you get both, you'll never obtain either one! We've got to take ground where we can get it!
