Pay attention. They want to do both the income tax and a federal sales tax!!
I find it rediculous I have $300-400 come out of my paycheck bi-weekly, and then have to turn around and pay sales tax, amongst hundreds of other tax scenarios. I am trying to afford school, and am barely making it all the while paying taxes so some other non working drug using sucker and live and drive a cadillac and get schooling for free. Where's the fairness in this? I say this is a first great and much needed step in the right direction to get people back to work --stop paying for them to slid by with MY TAXES...
I am definitely for a flat-rate tax -- more like 15% not 23% -- but I'm not at all positive that this one would work best. Open-ended as it is, the rate could be increased "at will." Should be reworded to include that it could only be raised by a "majority vote of the people." In addition, repealing a Constitutional Amendment would take time. All could be worked out over time. Unfortunately, left to the devices of our Congress & Senate, they would find another way to "part a man from his money." Our Congress/Senate is out of touch and out of control!
If all illegals and tourists joined in, we should do better than the present tax system where we the middle class carry all the burden.
How would this affect an individual such as myself who is single, unemployed (not for lack of trying) and raising 2 children? I do have an income, social security death benefits with no taxes taken out, it is $1000 a month. So who can tell me how this would affect people like me? Would it make it easier to buy a little food and pay bills every month or harder?
This bill may have a provision to repeal the Internal Revenue Code, but it does not repeal the 16th Amendment. We could always revert back and end up with both.
We should repeal the 16th Amendment and taxes will be collected by the states (in a manner of their choosing) then passed on to the federal government based on population (i.e. California has 12% of the US population and pays 12% of federal taxes).
The many loopholes in our tax code allows the wealthiest of us to avoid more in taxes than many of us make in a year! We should change the system so that our consumption based society can more fairly tax its citizens. The wealthiest members who consume the most should pay the greater burden in taxes. Boil the tax code down to something manageable!
So does anyone know if this will effect real estate and larger purchases such as vehicle and rv purchases?
You'd pay 30% tax on new cars and homes. Got an extra $6,000 for the tax on a new $20,000 car? Or how about $60,000 in tax on an new $200,000 home? I damned sure don't! (And since the tax does not increase the value of the car or home, you're not going to get a lender to loan you that money. You'll need to pay IN CASH at closing.)
10% is a better number than 23%, especially since the GOVT has proven that they are not the ones to spend the money in a reasonable manner-I don't trust them but if it is raised from 10% then it should take a majority from the populous of this NATION-from the people themselves NOT Congress!!
It amazes me that the majority of the American people support action being taken to reform the tax code. This plan would be widely supported because it not only simplifies the tax system, puts more of our money back in our pockets to spend as WE see fit, but also will continue to take care of those Americans who do not have a reliable source of income. Sounds like a win-win to me! I'm not a mathematician, but it seems to me that the purchases by the American "elite" (Hollywood, successful business men and women, etc.) would significantly contribute to both the federal budget AND the reduction of the national debt. When a percentage of taxes scales at the same rate from the bottom up, it puts an equal burden on Americans no matter the economic situation. Americans are "created equal", right? So why shouldn't we all be TAXED equally?
This is the major issue I see:
The MAJORITY (vast majority I would venture) of Americans would support this legislation, however Congress will not (and hasn't since it was introduced) pass this bill. Why? As other posters have stated we MUST as a NATION rise up and say, "HEY! We voted you in! We can darn sure vote you out and elect another Representative who will ACTUALLY VOTE THE WAY THE CONSTITUENTS WANT!"
I'm tired of self-serving politicians who have closed ears to the people they represent.
After looking at the votes for the bills on this site, I'm thinking that the members here are crazy conservative~
Like seriously,
I always imagined the internet as a place full of liberal-tech savy-kids.
You don't have to be a crazy conservative to believe in smaller federal government.
The problem is that those who can avoid income tax through loopholes and tax shelters are the ones lining our government's pockets. This is a fair way to tax the rich as well as giving a break to middle and low income families. So it will never happen.
Repeal the 16th Amendment, but don't replace it with a federal sales tax! Repeal the 17th Amendment and return taxing power and federal tax liability to the state legislatures!
When the states are writing those big checks out of their own coffers you will see some fiscal responsibility in Washington!
Why should we repeal the 17th Amendment? Direct election of Senators seems like a good idea to me...
The Seventeenth Amendment is damaging to federalism and state sovereignty. Originally, the senators would consult their state legislatures about impending legislation in Congress. This gave the state governments a say in Federal affairs. Now, senators consult the corporations and wealthy individuals who contribute to their campaigns.
Everyone knows that the Constitution was designed as an intricate system of checks and balances, but most people overlook that the election of Senators, the senior house, by the state legislatures was another check in the system.
Repealing the 17th would go a long way towards reducing the power of Washington.
All of these clowns are corrupt, that is why they don't have a Corruption Elimination Bill, please sign our petition. The right is only mad because the left now has the control of the corruption. All this effort and none on the true problem.

This bill is a step in the right direction for this country. As a candidate running for US Congress in Massachusetts against Barney Frank, I will say that I would vote for this bill 100%, and will help to promote it in Congress if I am elected. What I need is the support of the people to help me win the election and put this country back into the hands of the people.

This bill is great. No chance it gets passed unfortunately.
So, the answer to a sick economy is to increase prices and decrease consumption, thereby lowering corporate revenues? Sounds like a plan...
Let all hope that some of our representatives read some of these comments and start to think about someone other then themselves or what party they are supporting. Maybe one day a representative with think about the people rather then big business for once. LOL like that will ever happen!
I would like to see no taxes on necesities such as ground beef and other unprepared foods, t-paper ect. A small tax on non-nececity foods such as ice cream, snack cakes frozen TV dnners and the like.
This would give people an incentive to buy things that they need to prepare, making their money going further.
Graduating the the tax up on things that are not bacis necesities, but are needed such as clothes with the highest tax on luxuries.
This would eliminate the need to send checks out because what you really need is already tax free.
This bill would also get taxes paid on illegal money, meaning drugs money or other that in todays system goes unreported.
The IRS would be able to stay as the governments auditing agency to ensure that business collet and turn in the taxes they collect.
No need to complicate things. Food and medicine are already exempt from the current federal sales tax, so you could easily just up the rate without causing any hassle.
Think about the cost to business of having to buy all new cash registers, the paperwork deciding which category every item goes in, and all the other headaches.
Last time I worked retail, the registers could already handle multiple tax rates, to account for items taxed by the state but not the city, etc.n Defining the categories would be the biggest hassle, but the items should already be categorized (and probably labeled to indicate category) by the manufacturer, if for no other reason than to keep everything consistent.
Since we're not allowed to walk around naked, certain clothing should be considered basic necessities. Which items fall in that category would have to be carefully defined, though.
A tax on income is essentially rent for living here. Something like FairTax is like paying for services. You can use them, or not use them. You're not required to pay part of your paycheck to the government.
This is the 5th or 6th session of Congress that this bill has been introduced. It's submitted on the first day of the session, is referred to Ways and Means, and dies there with the end of the Congressional session 2 years later. It has ZERO chance of ever making it out of Ways & Means for good reason -- it would be resoundingly defeated on the first vote. Both parties have been in control of Congress at one time or another during this farcical bill's 12 odd year history, and neither party gives it any serious consideration at all. It's a political ploy for its sponsors who use it to whine to their constituents that they are "trying" to "fix" things, but "nobody will listen."
