This is an Arizona thing that would allow a copper company to mine a patch of land that is good for nothing else. This problem could easily be solved if the Federal Government did not own so much of Arizona.
No, this is an Arizona thing that would give federal park land to a copper company. The “exchange” means the copper miner is giving the government useless land it has already destroyed in the mining process, and taking the land east of Superior. That land is home to some of the best rock climbing in the state, a free campground and native sacred lands. It’s a perfect place for recession-wracked families to take a vacation, or a day trip, without having to spend the kind of money it takes to get to Disneyland, etc.
The copper company owned a mine there years ago, which resulted in the town of Superior being built and subsequently ravaged in the ensuing bust, leaving people jobless and destitute. This bill tosses aside the idea of a sustainable economy in favor of a political favor to a mining company.
Oh, and it’s worth noting: the “federal government” owning “so much” of Arizona means that YOU own it. Perhaps we should be better stewards of our own investment.
