Is Taxpayer Money Funding the Taliban?
And to think we have to beg our government for another extension of unemployment.

I’m not going to get into that here, no matter how valid the point is, because this is a board for people that are hoping for another unemployment extension so they can have a means to survive a while longer.

New York – The free-market Mont Pelerin Society held a special session at its meeting in Stockholm earlier this month to reassess Milton Friedman’s famous lecture, “Why the American Economy Is Depression-Proof.” Friedman gave this optimistic lecture in Sweden in 1954, at a time when some prominent economists and financial advisers were predicting another crash on Wall Street and a collapse in the economy.

Now, 55 years later, in the face of the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression, everyone at the meeting wanted to know if Mr. Friedman, one of the founders of the international society, would change his mind.

Nobody knows for sure, since Friedman died before the crisis started. I do know that he consistently refused to make any changes in his bold prediction.

Hi Gramps..hope you are doing okay. MA does get 20 weeks of EB. I am still on the first 13 weeks; it ends this week or next week, not sure. You’ll need to call and speak to a rep. When I had to call about an issue a few weeks ago it was impossible to get through during the week. When I called on Saturday I got through immediately and spoke with a very helpful, friendly person. Please let us know what you find out.

Gramps, did you get your full 30 weeks on your initial claim? If you did, you only get 16 weeks EB. You can only get a total of 46 weeks between regular benefits and EB. That happened to Flyrer08, too. We talked about here -

I hit 26 weeks a few days after the first extension was passed so they cancelled my other 4 weeks of regular benefits so I am getting the 20 now.

When EB first went into effect, they had posted that you could only get a toal of 39 weeks between regular and EB (26 + 13 or 30 + 9) so if you got the full 30 of regular, you only got 9 EB first tier and then the 7 EB second tier. I can’t find it there now but I remember it because I had to go back and find out whether I had gotten my 30 or if they had changed it to 26 (which they did). After the first extension passed, they started only giving 26 weeks.

Hopefully, if they don’t change this bill to a lower percentage qualifier, they will pass S1647 which MA now qualifies for.

Unemployment Jumps to 9.7%; Market Sheds 216000 Jobs – Economy …

The Labor Department said employers cut 216,000 jobs, the smallest since August 2008, and revised job losses for June and July to show 49,000 more jobs lost than previously reported.

They will probably revised the 216,000 jobs too..next month

  • ohionoeb 09/04/2009 4:16am

A gauge of labor market slack that measures the unemployed, people working part-time for economic reasons, and those only marginally attached to the labor force, rose to a record 16.8 percent in August from 16.3 percent in July.

Congress needs to pass a Bill to cover ALL States for “Emergency Unemployment Benefits” .. 16.8 percent in August justifys that..

Congress will probably scratch this Bill and come up with another one for all states..with these numbers being release this morning .. Which in turn will prolong the passing of a Bill.. They should have done this BEFORE they recess..

THIS IS TOTALLY IRRESPONSIABLE ON CONGRESS PART…

  • MBArry47 09/04/2009 4:26am

Unemployment will be THE NEWS for the next few days and Congress will soon be back from the big snooze now is the time to start contacting your reps.

I had to mail out my properity taxes today.. 1600.00 Just hoping that I can get enough money to clear the check…. I hate to pay these. It would be alot to pay these if I was still getting EB,

  • ohionoeb 09/04/2009 4:56am
    1600.00 ? I don’t have 16.00..

I’m pissed off about these unemployment numbers today ..WE NEED JOBS..PERIOD

I’m am so sick of relying on Congress for unemployment benefits ..They never pass them before peoples benefits run out …then our bills get behind ..

We NEED JOBS .. a steady pay check ..so our Rent,Utlities get paid on TIME ..

While unemployment is rising.. Pelosi is worried about ramming a public health care option down everyone’s throat whether they want it or not. Obama is sending more troop to fight wars he promised to end.

Let’s worry about the regular people that need jobs, need to stay in their homes, and need to feed their kids. This politics as usual stinks and is definitely not changing anything.

You must have health coverage , I think the majority of the unemployed don’t so I am for universal health care, if I have a cronic disease I should be treated a well as the congressman and woman I vote into office.

I’ve also emailed my legislators AGAIN and The Ways and Means committee. I hope this is addressed on Tuesday. I see on the Senate schedule that the tourism bill is up that day. Doesn’t mean S 1647 won’t be addressed though. House calendar is not updated.

The only thing on the senate schedule Sept 8: CALENDAR OF BUSINESS Tuesday, September 8, 2009 SENATE CONVENES AT 2:00 P.M.

Ordered, That at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 8, 2009, the Senate
    resume consideration of S. 1023, a bill to establish a non-profit
corporation to communicate United States entry policies and otherwise
    promote leisure, business, and scholarly travel to the United States;

This is more important then addressing Unemployment Benefits (S 1647) .. UNBELEIVABLE..

  • ohionoeb 09/04/2009 8:21am

The number of weekly hours worked remained at 33.1, above the low of 33 reached in June. That figure is important because economists expect companies will add more hours for current workers before they hire new ones.
