huh
What new tax?
It would be nice to do away with the middle man (insurance). It doen’t look like that will happen.
The opponents quote the 10th Amendment to the constitution as their rational for the “unconstitutional” argument: The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.
What they leave out is that other social programs like unemployment and Social Security, have been upheld by the courts as constitutional under the “general welfare” clause of Article 1 sec. 8 of the Constitution. Will the bill congress is working on stand up in the courts? Hard to say. Most of these people scream “unconstitutional” at just about anything. Take it with a grain of salt.
OK, this may sound wacked out,BUT what if each state took the funds out of its lottery commission to fund its individual state’s unemployment extension?? Everyone KNOWS how much money is made by the lottery commission!!! Just a thought. Horray for the great work force recovery bill. Let’s hope it works…(rolls eyes) BUT PLEASE CONGRESS, PASS AN AMENDMENT to the existing tier AT LEAST to get us through to eat, pay for gas to get to our interviews, and to pay for clothing and shoes for an interview!!

Almost nothing the gov’t does is good!
Mediocre is the best they can do (And even that is rare).
It’s breath taking that these selfrightious, arrogant government elitists are so defiant towards the American people. It’s sad that they might really believe they’re doing the right thing. No, that’s not it. It’s their uncontrollable urge for supreme power over the people, all under the guise of “looking out for the little guy” – your typical Julius Ceaser politics.

My point was supposed to be that people should know certian things, but since the issue is not simple and public media has failed to keep the public informed, we end up wasting a lot of time on rhetoric when matters of fact could be stated more simply. I got a little side tracked. It’s late.
That’s really the problem with the whole issue. Since our “news” outlets are no longer in the information business (they are in the entertainment business), and outrageous fights over fictional matters get more ratings than reasoned argument over matters of fact, we’ve ended up with an uninformed public that is rabid about things that don’t exist in this bill because their “news” (commentary) networks are.
The language of this law was carefully crafted so that one can claim it is only ‘regulation’ of the health insurance industry. But there is a large lack of limitations specifying how far that regulation will be allowed in practice. So yes, the talk of death panels is bunk – there are none, but there is no definitive verbiage in it that would prevent restrictions from reimbursing for treatments that were deemed ineffective. That is why this issue is so highly polarized – its interpretation hinges on whether you have a more apprehensive or altruistic view of government or big business.
Let’s see what HAS the free market given me? An incredibly high standard of living perhaps. More selection of goods an services than can be imagined in a centrally controlled economy? Competition is what is is all about. Government run industries have none and do take everything from you for crappy goods and services. This bill effectively will put private insurers out of busienss, forcing a government option as a response to an “emergency”. Or, government control of the companies. In either case, no competition and eventually very expensive very mediocre health care. Unless you are in Congress of course.
But, this always boils down to this: Do you want to be self reliant or do you rely on and trust your government to fix your problems and make you happy? If you do want the government to take care of you, getting you to look at the history and impacts of big government is like teaching a pig to sing. It only annoys the pig and frustrates the teacher.
This bill creates far more problems than it solves PLUS causing costs to rise even more!
It should be scrapped and start over.
The first two goals should be; (1) to make healthcare more affordable for EVERYONE!
and (2) make it more accessible to low wage earners.
Healthcare will NEVER be free!… No matter how much you want it to be.
And expensive care must paid for by “someone”.
For the liberals, that “someone” is just about anybody else who makes a more $$$ than they do!
Problem is, sooner or later, you run out of other people’s money.
This is the core flaw of Socialism.
Last year our federal income tax, alone, was within 3 or 4 thousand dollars of my husband’s entire gross income! We have 4 children and both work full time, plus I have 4 prn positions to keep us afloat. As a health care professional I am livid when I see the amount of my hard-earned $ that our government wastes. When a customer/patient drives up to our drive-thru in a Lincoln Navigator, wearing designer clothes, and talking on a Blackberry then hands me a medicaid card to pay for their medication it is difficult to maintain a professional composure. I resent giving half of my income to these kinds of people. Waste is rampant!!! If our government wants to save $ on healthcare, lets limit access to these programs to only the elderly, TRULY disabled, or critically ill (those with a CRITICAL illness that prevents them from working). I stood on my feet working 10 – 12 hr shifts for the past 2 years with a hemoglobin of 7 (they give transfusions at 5). If I can do it, so can a lot of others
The current versions of health care reform being considered by Congress are an unwanted intrusion. It’s time to “cease and desist” any and all efforts to pass ObamaCare in either the House or the Senate.Where is the transparency promised by President Obama and touted by Nancy Pelosi?
Listen to the voice of middle-class Americans who are demanding you REJECT this mad dash toward socialized health care.
hones
it is a MONOPOLY NOW!
Reform will make it a free market! Get it!
With this bill, we’ll get: a standard for Qualified Health Plans, individual options among those plans; requires those plans to provide coverage for, and not impose any cost sharing requirements for: preventive services, immunizations, and preventative screenings for women and children; reductions in the maximum limits for out-of-pocket expenses, improved Access to Medicaid, and modernizes public health systems. And provides that “nothing in this Act shall be construed to require that an individual terminate coverage under a group health plan or health insurance coverage in which such individual was enrolled on the date of enactment of this Act.”
The Reconciliation bill adds: medical loss ratio rebates, elimination of annual or lifetime limits, no cost-sharing for preventive care, increased penalties for fraud and abuse, and money and more authority for enforcement, whistle blower protection, legislates more transparency from the insurance companies.
Better than nothing.
A Bill of Attainder is a legislative act that punishes a specific individual or group without a trial or judicial hearing. The United States Constitution (Article I, Section 9, paragraph 3) expressly forbids Bills of Attainder, whether at the federal or state level because the framers wanted to make that everyone received due process; that there be a separation of powers; and that no individual or group be singled out for punishment without benefit of trial or hearing. This provision was included in the Constitution because the framers had witnessed how the British monarchy and parliament had used Bills of Attainder to punish dissidents, political rivals and popular movements.
The indoor tanning industry was “…singled out for punishment without benefit of trial or hearing” when the 10% Tan Tax (in H.R. 3590) was passed by the Senate. This provision is a Bill of Attainder violation that deprives the indoor tanning industry of their Constitutional rights.
@Analyst1
The difference is that public roads are a public good, financed by the public. Health insurance companies, are not.
Government jurisdiction should be religated to institutions and assets that are public goods.
And this intrusive, over-extending form of government is what those logically consistent ‘tea baggers’ are protesting against.
THESE ARE NOT RIGHTS!!!
We pay sales and property taxes (among others) for these services.
BTW, we are “endowed” with our rights.
The gov’t can only regulate or take them from us.
And, the gov’t has no money it has not taken from us!
So if you think their being generous, you are a fool!
Time to get back to earth and educated moongirl61!

I have had a problem with additional policies riding the coattail of other policies as long as I can remember. That process has been leveraged by democrats and republicans for years. In fact, the size of many of the policies has been abrused in similar fashion by both parties. I want to see solutions presented by both parties. Don’t base your argument on the size or the bill or how fast the bill is passed. BTW, I am an Independent.
Most of what the Republican party’s original ideology has been warped, and tainted by greed. Especially the part regarding ending slavery, which in some sense isn’t true, yes people get paid for working, but how much, in all reality we should be receiving a minimum wage of 13.78 per hr (based on rate of inflation and consumer price index calculator), but we still don’t even see the $10 per hr. minimum wage yet. When “Big Businesses” close up shop in the US and put millions out of work, how in the world do you expect them to afford any health care costs? You try to live on a fixed income like they have for just one month, I dare you, and see how you fare. Walk a mile in the other’s shoes.
When did we start saying having insurance is a right? Insurance is a privilege, a benifit for those who earn it. The insurance I have comes with my job, its part of my compensation just like my pay check is. Why are we giving compensation to people who never earned it? Whats next, government run car insurance? When we start moving away from a merit-based society, society itself will collapse.

This is the change that we were all hoping for – stopping such criminal activity.
We’ve got to remind these people that OUR VOTES are what they listen to.
Not Lobbyists, Not Special Interests, Not Campaign Donations, Not Unions, Not Corporations.
The law that was passed declaring that corporations deserve the freedom of speech and could donate to political campaigns without any tracking is the most recent step to destroying America. Currently, we’re able to track what donations have been made and what politicians have been bought. Soon, we won’t be able to monitor this illegal activity and it will only get worse.
The biggest fears are that this will extend outside our nation’s borders and will allow foreign entities to donate unchecked. The Supreme Court has just sold America to the highest bidder and removed the vocal chords of the American Voter.
Last month our elected officials fed myself and many others to the sharks, when they did not add a tier 5 in Pennsylvania. Since then I have searched the websites of Arlen Specter and Bob Casey, to see if they were addressing this issue. What I have found is that they all just seem to be ignoring it. They are not mentioning unemployment at all. The are all shouting and throwing their hands up in praise of some workforce recovery act. I received a response to an email that I sent to Casey, about my need for a tier 5, and he responded by telling me about this great work force recovery bill they passed. He did not even mention the word unemployment in it, not once. These politicians want to tell us they have created jobs – why don’t they offer us one then? Now they are going to give an extension to others and not to us. If they give an extension to any they should give one to all. I have been looking for work, for so long, and now I don’t have any money at all to look for work.
