Yes first checked bag fees can seem excessive, but it is nonetheless a shame to see government officials introduce bills based on personal anger as opposed to the need for legislation. Here’s a suggestion for our congresspeople in Washington: if you don’t want to pay for first checked bags, then don’t fly an airline that will charge for one. But please, don’t let your personal dissatisfaction with the industry’s decision to charge for checked luggage get in the way of your ability to legislate effectively. It is not the place of the government to tell airlines to change their business models because the governors would prefer a different model.
