If you really are too damn lazy to do it yourself…..
Fact: Guns prevent an estimated 2.5 million crimes a year, or 6,849 every day. Often the gun is never fired and no blood (including the criminal’s) is shed.
-“Targeting Guns”, Dr. Gary Kleck, Criminologist, Florida State University, 1997
Fact: Every day, 550 rapes, 1,100 murders, and 5,200 other violent crimes are prevented just by showing a gun. In less than 0.9% of these instances is the gun ever actually fired.
- “Targeting Guns”, Dr. Gary Kleck, Criminologist, Florida State University, 1997
Fact: 60% of convicted felons admitted that they avoided committing crimes when they knew the victim was armed. 40% of convicted felons admitted that they avoided committing crimes when they thought the victim might be armed.
- James Wright and Peter Rossi, “Armed and Considered Dangerous: A Survey of Felons and Their Firearms”, NewYork: Aldine, 1986
Fact: Felons report that they avoid entering houses where people are at home because they fear being shot.
- James Wright and Peter Rossi, “Armed and Considered Dangerous: A Survey of Felons and Their Firearms”, NewYork: Aldine, 1986
Fact: 59% of the burglaries in Britain, which has tough gun control laws, are “hot burglaries” which are burglaries committed while the home is occupied by the owner/renter. By contrast, the U.S., with more lenient gun control laws, has a “hot burglary” rate of only 13%.
- Dr. Gary Kleck, Criminologist, Florida State University (1997) and Kopel (1992 and 1999)
Fact: Washington D.C. has essentially banned gun ownership since 1976 and has a murder rate of 56.9 per 100,000. Across the river in Arlington, Virginia, gun ownership is less restricted. There, the murder rate is just 1.6 per 100,000, less than three percent of the Washington, D.C. rate.
- FBI, “Crime in the United States”, 1998
Fact: 26% of all retail businesses report keeping a gun on the premises for crime control.
- U.S. Small Business Administration, “Crime Against Small Business”, 1969, Senate Document No. 91-14
Fact: In 1982, Kennesaw, GA passed a law requiring heads of households to keep at least one firearm in the house. The residential burglary rate dropped 89% the following year.
- Dr. Gary Kleck, “Crime Control Through the Private Use of Armed Force”, Social Problems, February 1988
Fact: A survey of felons revealed the following:
• 74% of felons agreed that “one reason burglars avoid houses when people are at home is that they fear being shot during the crime.”
• 57% of felons polled agreed, “criminals are more worried about meeting an armed victim than they are about running into the police.”
- Dr. Gary Kleck, “Crime Control Through the Private Use of Armed Force”, Social Problems, February 1988
Fact: Firearm misuse causes only a small number of accidental deaths in the U.S. For example, compared to accidental death from firearms, you are:
• Four times more likely to burn to death or drown,
• 17 times more likely to be poisoned,
• 19 times more likely to fall, and
• 53 times more likely to die in an automobile accident.
- Dr. Gary Kleck, “Crime Control Through the Private Use of Armed Force”, Social Problems, February 1988
Fact: In 2001, there were only 65 accidental gun deaths for children under age 13. About 11 times as many children die from drowning.
- National Center for Health Statistics, and the National Spa and Pool Institute
Fact: In 1993, there were 1,334 drownings and 528 firearm-related accidental deaths from ages 0-19. Firearms outnumber pools by a factor of over 30:1. Thus, the risk of drowning in a pool is nearly 100 times higher than from a firearm-related accident for everyone, and nearly 500 times for ages 0-5.
- National Center for Health Statistics, and the National Spa and Pool Institute
Fact: Medical mistakes kill 400,000 people per year – the equivalent of almost three fully loaded Boeing 747 jet crashes per day – or about 286 times the rate of all accidental firearm deaths. This translates
into 1 in 6 doctors causing an accidental death, and 1 in 56,666 gun owners doing the same.
- Medical death statistics from Dr. David Lawrence, CEO Kaiser Permanente. Gun deaths 1993, CDC report
Fact: Less than 1% of all gun homicides involve innocent bystanders.
- Sherman, Steele, Laufersweiler, Hoffer and Julian, “Stray bullets and ‘mushrooms’”, 1989, Journal of Quantitative Criminology Deaths
Fact: About 11% of police shootings kill an innocent person – about 2% of shootings by citizens kill an innocent person. The odds of a defensive gun user killing an innocent person are less than 1 in 26,000. And that is with citizens using guns to prevent crimes almost 2,500,000 times every year.
- C. Cramer, and D. Kopel "Shall Issue: The New Wave of Concealed Handgun Permit Laws”. Independence Institute Issue Paper. October 17, 1994
I could go on, but you get the point.
1,334:528 ≠ 30:1
You really are dense. Read it again and when you understand it, do the math.
HEY CONGRESS! Remember, you work for us. Let us also remember that we have the right to ask them to step down if they are not representing the goals, needs and rights of their respective constituencies.
We do not have to set back and accept their voting patterns which are based on an internal process of ‘saving their job’ more than saving their charges.
If your Congressman or Senator is failing, make it VERY PUBLIC, as many times as you can, on as many blogs as you can. Email the very public News entities who can post your true feelings about Political Failure.
What have you got to lose? Your freedoms that the boys in Iraq, Afganistan, Vietnam, Korea, and the WW2 laid down their lives for.
They say they are doing for the good of the Nation, but its for their own that they craft a bill to remove our rights while giving themselves raises, full benefits, and full retirement as nothing but “PART-TIME” workers.
It’s total B.S. What really gets me is that even if you’re able to maintain the stupid license required to own a gun, you still have to wave your rights, allowing the officials to enter your home at any time (without a warrant) to make sure your gun is locked and out of reach of children. They hide behind the “we want to keep children safe” caveat, but really that’s just their way of taking away our rights and getting around the warrant process. How am I going to keep my kid safe if I can’t get to my gun when I need it? Basically, if you own a gun, you’re opening your door to officials at any time. Welcome to the start of socialism/communism/total government control. So, if this passes, I can say, “hey criminal, come into my house and do whatever you want. I have a gun, but don’t worry because it’s locked up securely enough that I can’t get to it in time to protect myself.” Congratulations criminals. This is your lucky day! Sleep easy fellow Americans!
The way things are going we will have to change our initials. Welcome to the U.S.S.A.. The Ununited Socialist States of America.
It is our second amendment right to keep and bear arms. WHEN GUNS ARE OUTLAWED, I WILL BECOME AN OUTLAW!!!! I do not think this is the approach our government should try to take. Good for you I agree completly with you. If we keep voiceing our opinion maybe they will hear us!!!
I couldn’t agree more with you. Haven’t Congress been hearing whats going down in Mexico-unarmed citizens and fully armed drug traffickers. The same thing will happen here with all of these unnecessary restrictions. Continue buying AWs and ammo before it is too late.
At the end, it says that this bill WILL become law in one year. It was put up last Jan-Feb (2009) so my question is, has it already become a law? And what happened to the good old days when AMERICAN citizens VOTED?? If our representatives or senators are voting FOR this, we should make sure they are out of office ASAP!! And to Shaniqua12…let go of the spelling fetish, it makes you look ignorant to nitpick at something so inconsequential.
I agree completely!!! I believe that the majority of people in this country want to be taken “care of” by our government so they can sit on their fat asses watch T.V, play on the computer, get drunk or due drugs or all of the above. The major problem here is that these people vote, and they do not have a clue that the government will be happy to take care of them, but at a SERIOUS PRICE!!!!! All of our freedoms!!!!!! Get off your asses, work, pray, and fight!!!!!
Pull your heads out of your asses america!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am a US Marine, I swore to defend our constitution from all enimies both forign and demistic over 12 years ago and every four years after that. This includes our second amendment. That being said, I’ll make sure this gets passed around the ranks and see what me fellow Marines think about it. I bet they will all go take leave and buy more guns and prepair for another war. OOOOOOHRAAAAAAAAA !!!
I do understand why you think the HR 45 Bill should be passed. However, my concern is the people on the streets. They have more opportunities to obtain firearms illegally. This would make it much easier for them to injure or kill more innocent people because we, as the innocent people, wouldn’t be able to defend ourselves against something like that. I wouldn’t have so much of a problem with this bill if you were able to keep illegal arms off the streets. They’re the ones that concern me. Not the ones that don’t want to cause harm to anybody. It looks to me that it’s much easier for the people that don’t have any business having guns (the criminals) than it is for someone who wants or needs to defend their home and families. In essence, I do not agree with this Bill. I believe we as the United States of America, have the right to bear arms!!!!
Like your comment. Trying this “reply” route because system won’t take my comment!
This bill is an outrageous attack on the 2nd Amendment. It is one of several efforts by this Congress & Executive Branch to increase the power of Government over the individual. H.R.45 would circumvent the Supreme Court’s affirmation of the 2nd Amendment’s applicability to individual citizens. It strikes at one’s very ability (and biological necessity) to defend oneself, family and property. H.R.45 proves the correctness of Albert Camus’ judgment made over 60 years ago: “The greatest evil of our time is the state, whether of the right or the left” (from memory, but intent is accurate).
This is just another Gun-Control Bill that the Anti-Gun people want to push through during a Democratically controlled Congress. There are already enough licenses for firearm ownership, we do not need more. Vote against this bill!
The National Rifle Association is against this bill and so am I, All Senators and Representatives must vote NO!
if the national rifle association told you to shoot yourself with one of their rifles, would you do that too?
what a dumb ass!!!!

Excellent post!

I agree 100%. Why impose restrictions on the law-abiding citizens? It is the criminals they are after – why don’t they try cutting down on the illegal sales of firearms instead of adding to the legal sales which already has enough restrictions of its own. Tas payers dollars could be doing a lot to cut down on the illegal sales but you have to think, are the black market people smarter than those in the government and law enforcement or are they allowing this to go on so they have something to bitch about and to restrict the law abiding citizens even more…? I believe the government needs to get their heads out of their asses and pay attention to more important things.
You are 100% right, this HR 45 would be a severe breech of all Americans civil rights, including 2nd ammendment rights.
Passage of this law would criminalize all law abiding citizens who own guns.
Not to say increased taxes on registration, fees etc is NOT in our best interest. I read below … there will not be enough jails to hold us all or the courts would overflow.
Is George Soros footing the bill for $$$?
The second ammendment IS my license to own a gun. Period.
Fellow Americans and patriots, this continual assault on the 2nd amendment has absolutely nothing to do with safety or keeping guns out of the hands of criminals. No my friends, as has been proven so many times now, this is ALL about disarming the public so that they have no means to defend themselves against their own tyranical government should the need arise. Not only did the Founders create this to make it possible for the populace to repel invaders from without, provide food and defend themselves, but also to have the means to rise up and remove a government that no longer represents their interests in any fashion. Everything else the leftists say is just a smoke screen to hide their real intent. Once you understand this, the rest becomes HD clear. If they are ever able to disarm us, freedom will become a distant memory.
I wonder does this cover home made fire arms
“Columnist David Codrea of Guns Magazine, calls it a “ridiculous affront to liberty.” “This is nothing less than a declaration of war on American gun owners,” Codrea writes in Gun Rights Examiner. – Drew Zahn, WorldNet Daily
War is a viable option. I need to start another group "1 million rednecks – with guns.com.
