Official Summary

5/20/2010--Introduced.Gestational Diabetes Act of 2009 [sic] or the GEDI Act - Amends the Public Health Service Act to require the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS), acting through the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), to convene a Research Advisory Committee. Requires the Director, in consultation with the Research Advisory Committee, to develop a multisite, gestational diabetes research project within the CDC's diabetes program to expand and enhance surveillance data and public health research on gestational diabetes. Requires the Secretary, acting through the Director, to award grants to nonprofit organizations or state or local health agencies for demonstration projects that build capacity with key stakeholders, build new surveillance systems, and implement and evaluate evidence-based interventions to reduce the incidence of gestational diabetes and its recurrence and to prevent type 2 diabetes after pregnancy. Requires the Director to conduct and support public health research regarding gestational diabetes, which research shall include:
(1) developing and testing novel approaches for improving postpartum diabetes testing or screening and for preventing type 2 diabetes in women with a history of gestational diabetes; and
(2) conducting research to further understanding of the epidemiologic, socioenvironmental, behavioral, translation, and biomedical factors and health systems that influence risk of gestational diabetes and progression to type 2 diabetes. Requires the Director to encourage postpartum screenings after gestational diabetes within the state-based diabetes prevention and control programs to reduce the incidence of gestational diabetes and its recurrence, progression to type 2 diabetes, and its related complications.
