The government is already backing millions of risky loans. Banks have failed because of loans to builders. With the government backing builders’ loans, there will be even less incentive for lenders to be responsible, and tax payers will again be saddled with the bill. This bill is a very bad idea, and is offensive, corporate welfare, for an indsutry that has acted irreponsibly, even criminally in some cases, helping to take out the economy. (E.g. HUD’s RESPA violations name many builders, HUD has fined builders millions for predatory lending, the govt settled a large criminal mortgage fraud case last year w/a big builder, and congress had to ban money laundering down payment programs used heavily by builders to get people into over inflated houses.) Taxpayers have had enough of paying for bad lending and bad business.
