NO. This is NOT a loophole for AM and FM radio stations. This is FREE advertising for the songwriters and should NOT be charged to the radio station.

Isn’t it funny how the pro-socialist supporters of Obama were the ones out there demanding that this bill be passed to insure money was secured to THEIR pockets?

    Read:

“* Sheryl Crow, Emmylou Harris, Will.I.Am, Herbie Hancock, Dionne Warwick, Matt Maher, Los Tigres del Norte, and Patti LaBelle came to Washington, D.C. on February 24 to show their support for the Performance Rights Act. They met with various Members of Congress to express why this legislation is so important to them and artists across the U.S.”

    Take note of the names.

I can’t believe that this is even on the table. With this bill (Black) Gospel Music and Black Talk Radio would no longer exist. Black Gospel is the foundation of so many families and means so much to so many Black people today. They are family friendly stations that you can listen to with your kids and not worry about the kids hearing something negative or derogative either from the songs played or the station DJs. Aside from that, passing this bill would also keep up and coming artists from being heard. This bill cannot be passed.

I believe that gospel radio stations need to stay on the air so that this Nation can come back to it’s rightful place unto God. The Nation is already in state of unrighteousness. We need every tool that we can use to touch the people in this Nation from Radio, Talk shows, and televsion to reach out to the people so they can reposition themselves. Exspecially our young people we nee Gospel Music to stay on the Radio, and Black Talk Radio to continue to reach out. This Nation has back slending and we need all that we can to bring it back into line with the Word of God. The Gospel Music, and Black Talk Show do reach out to our people.

would you like islamic teachings played equally as well?

  • mshtowncds 05/13/2009 2:09pm

Instead of making the radio stations pay to play, why don’t you ask the record companies pay a fair price upfront. Not all of us listen to radio stations with a big budget.

I’m opposed to HR 848 —this bill unfairly seeks payment from radio stations when stations have already paid record companies for the right to air various music recordings.

I am a liberal…. but I think this bill should never see the light of day, it is very unfair and I’m hoping that the above mentioned entertainers did not actually take the time to research it and digest it before they jumped on the band wagon…. I will be following this one real close… I think free radio as we know it will ceast to exist like many other things in the country… As for Islamic teachings on the air it seems that America has gotten away from English and traditional teachings so if there is a audience for this and all of the other teachings out there then more power to them.

Anything that adds another level of complexity to our already overly complex copyright laws is a terrible idea.

millions of people listen to radios all day long. it helps them express themselves and it’s something that has been around for many years. there is no reason to allow this bill to become a law. it helps music artists alot, so you wouldn’t only be causing the radio stations a problem. and don’t forget about the ppl workin at the radio stations. that is how they make a living. this bill could cause many more ppl to lose jobs, which is only going to make things worse. let this bill die. it’ll cause so many more problems than it’s worth.

This appears to be a case of cutting off your nose to spite your face, I’m so disappointed in the above people who went Washington Have they forgot how they got where they are? Why not go after the record companies, or is that who told you all to go to D.C. Shame. Shame.

I am a Obama supporter and a African American. I have read this bill and I think that it should pass. I’m 30yrs old and I find it rediculous how we are acting like black radio is in “DANGER” black radio has been in danger for a long time now. Anytime you can turn to a radio station while driving your family home and a song call " BIRTHDAY SEX" is playing that’s a problem. I’m tired of some of these station playing music that put us in a stereotype of bling, drugs and thugs. We are a soulful and harmonizing culture of musician. I am not saying all of our radio station are playing crap but we know which ones are. So let stop playing like radio station are the victims they have made billions of dollars and have been the problem for years.
In this bill SEC. 3. SPECIAL TREATMENT FOR SMALL, NONCOMMERCIAL, EDUCATIONAL, AND RELIGIOUS STATIONS AND CERTAIN USES. I find that section very interesting. We should ask more question about that section.

It appears the vast majority doesn’t understand this bill. To understand how this isn’t a “radio killer” take a look at http://thetechnologist.tv/blog/tim-pandora-comments-hr-848

HR 848 is great!! All music fans should support this bill. Here is a little historical explanation:

When copyright law was being revamped in the 1960s, radio stations (then the only true mass communication media) were able to lobby the politicians to exclude a ‘performance right’ for sound recordings. Broadcasters basically said, “either you allow us not to pay for the use of the sound recordings, or we won’t let you campaign over our airwaves”.

Policitians of course couldn’t lose their direct line to the people, so they made the deal and carved out the broadcasters exception that is currently in place in the 1976 Copyright Act.

But now that the Internet and other technologies such as TV and Satellite have become better communication tools than the radio, Broadcasters can’t use that above argument any more!! The playing field is leveled, and I believe that if digital broadcasters have to pay (see 17 USC 1106(6)), then terrestrial radio should pay as well.
