I see a lot of comments flying around about making seed saving illegal. What provision in the bill are people getting that from?
I likewise would appreciate someone pointing out the section / clause referring to restrictions on seeds.
“And Other Purposes”, basically can be whatever they deem necessary. These are words that Shoud Not Be In Any Bill Passed by our Senate or House of representatives. It gives them the power to do anything.
saving seed is illegal when you plant a seed designed by monsanto. you sign a technology agreement when you buy. this is just expanding this power a little at a time.
Below is a link to a petition I started against this bill. It will be sent to Washington DC. Please sign, add a comment such as you have on Open Congress, and share with others to sign and comment upon. Thank you, Evelyn Bone

Where does reply go?
They can also take farmer’s to court who live next to farms that use monsanto seed, if the pollen travels to their farm and fertilizes non-monsanto seed, monsanto has been known to file a lawsuit against the farmer who didn’t even buy their seed and was saving what he thought was the seed he bought certified organic. Contamination rights, apparently.
Has anyone proposed amendments excluding home gardens or farms below a certain size? Much of the fine detail will be in regulations and are not in the main body of the bill.
I suggest you employ lawyers, pro bono if necessary, to make sure these claims have any validity and if they do, propose amendments.
I was a Senator for fifteen years.
Democrats love to spend. Because this bill goes way beyond the needs required. And gives more power to the government. Promoting accountability should not be only the governments job. This bill would increase non-needed spending when a recession is at hand. Ridiculous, but since the Democrats have power, things will only get worse.
Everyone loves to spend. Partisanship has no place in this discussion. The two-party system is largely to blame for most of the mess the country is in. Each member of Congress shuts off their brain and votes with their party in the manner prescribed by lobbyists. Therein lies the problem.
These Corporate Sponsored Fascist / Socialist / Communist “Reps” in DC want to control EVERY aspect of our lives
Push eventually comes to shove….. and they keep pushing from all sides
This Bill is just another way of taking away another freedom and keeping Americans under the control of the biotechnological corporations. Monsanto has been demanding their way for far too long and winning. They need to be stopped.
If you had any doubts, Fascism Rules!!! This bill is nothing but a ploy by big agra and the globalists to control us and the best way is thru our food supply. Can’t buy healthy food, can’t grow our own healthy food…all we can do is pay outrageous prices, and eat GMO food laced with pesticides and chemicals. LibertyRevolution is correct…push comes to shove…and it is time to start shoving back!!!
This is government corruption in plain sight. DeLauro’s husband, Stanley Greenburg, works for Monsanto. Do you think there might be a conflict of interest here? She should be impeached and thrown in jail.
Recalled, perhaps. Throw in jail, come on. Exaggeration allows the media to write-off our legitimate concerns as the ravings of crackpots.
Since the Clintons people associated with Monsanto have been given more policy power in government. American people refuse to be lab rats for agri-business. This is exactly why there is the demand for organically grown products and growth of farmer’s markets. We are playing Russian roulette with our future. We only really know about maybe 10% of all of the many organisms and life on this planet. Monsanto has no idea how all of their tampering with GMOs will affect an overall system that we know little about. Their arrogance at endangering future generations is staggering. Their “terminator” gene is frightening. Of course they insist that it will not affect non-GMO seed like the GMO seed that has contaminated heirloom seeds grown around the world for thousands of years. This is why GMO seed has been banned in most of the rest of the world. Worldwide people are trying to stop GMO products. HR875 is all about control and has NOTHING to do with food safety. Don’t be dupped. FIGHT BACK
I have read all the comments here, and read a decent amount of the bill. I wonder, when, as Americans, do we stop believing what other folks say we should believe, and take advantage of our amazing abilities to find out for ourselves? Judging by the muck raking and knee-jerk comments posted here, never may be the sad answer. This bill, it seems to me, proposes to help the FDA, an agency who’s powers are not that all encompassing when it comes to food product safety, by establishing an agency who’s sole purpose is to ensure the safety of our food. I have not seen ANY language threatening personal grower’s rights, seeds, land, or any such other than to more rigorously enforce the laws already on the books and to establish additional teaching, testing, and more scientific methods of ensuring that the food we eat won’t kill us.
Thank you, Elliot.
Elliot, I don’t know how you define “a decent amount of the bill.” I put it to you that you absolutely, positively cannot have read all of it. I have read the definitions, and I remind you that what any bill does not *ex*clude *ex*plicitly, it *in*cludes *im*plicitly.
You asked whether Whole Foods Market has had anything to say about this bill. Well, I don’t know. But if you go over to Whole Foods Market’s own site, you’ll see a list of policies and practices that they engage in, in an effort to be good neighbors and promote the cause of organic farming, local growing, and “sustainable agriculture,” which is pretty much the sort of agriculture that George Washington practiced at Mount Vernon. (I ought to know: I’ve been there.)
And I will tell you positively that HR 875 would threaten every one of Whole Foods’ policies. And I told them so. I’m sure they’ll realize it, and then you’ll hear from them, loud and clear.
The government has no business determining what its citizens can or cannot grow, buy, sell, ingest, smoke, read, etc. Unless we in America start taking back responsibility for our lives we will continue down the totalitarian path to slavery. We’re nearly there.
It is not the government’s job to ‘keep us safe’. It’s ours, 100%. The biggest threat to our food supply and our health is the federal government & agencies filled with corporate executives who make regulations benefitting their bank accounts. It used to be called conflict of interest but now it’s standard practice. Multiply this by every branch of government including the judicial (owned by the Chamber of Commerce and Big Business) and you have Fascist State Phase One completed.
SEC.3.
(14) FOOD PRODUCTION FACILITY- The term ‘food production facility’ means any farm, ranch, orchard, vineyard, aquaculture facility, or confined animal-feeding operation.
I say, “This will put an end to farmers markets, where you can now go to get great food.”
SEC. 201. ADMINISTRATION OF NATIONAL PROGRAM.
(a) In General- The Administrator shall—
(1) develop, administer, and annually update a national food safety program (referred to in this section as the ‘program’) to protect public health; and
I say, "This means they can develop, administer and annually update whatever the heck they want!
ya better take a look at bill S.425 that is sitting there waiting for this one to get passed!
‘(ii) Electronic records identifying each prior sale, purchase, or trade of the food and its ingredients, and establishing that the food and its ingredients were grown, prepared, handled, manufactured, processed, distributed, shipped, warehoused, imported, and conveyed under conditions that ensure the safety of the food.
cont’d The records should include an electronic statement with the date of, and the names and addresses of all parties to, each prior sale, purchase, or trade, and any other information as appropriate.
Monsanto bought and paid for yet another Senator.
I have seen where your contributions came from.
Keep your dirty money, Senator, but let us eat our clean food.
This bill will hurt any health conscious individuals and organic food providers. We need to stop this bill so we can still get organic food. Its the preservatives, chemical sprays, and other synthetic additives that is contributing to our health problems. this bill comes at a crucial time when traditional medicine is just beginning to research “alternatives” and the facts about organics is out. Please read the entire bill before making a decision. Also, do some research on FDA and know exactly why this bill is on the agenda. We want healthy food and all of the real facts from the FDA. Do not let this bill pass, it is not as benign as it looks, read it all. Be informed.
Talk about TOTAL CONTROL over the food supply of ALL American citizens!
It gives the government the right to DETAIN and SEIZE any food they decide they want to (hm’m are you by chance growing a garden – too bad, they don’t want you to have that either), all they have to do is say it violates something in this enormous bill and they can take it.
“It is the duty of the patriot to protect his country from its government”. – Thomas Paine (1737-1809)
“If people let government decide what foods they eat and what medicines they take, their bodies will soon be in as sorry a state as are the souls of those who live under tyranny”. – Thomas Jefferson
You haven’t read the fine print then . This is monsanto sponsored to put the organic farmers out of business. Period.
I’ve heard that refrain repeated, but it makes me wonder if Whole Foods has made a comment on this bill. Likewise, what about the various major chains that are appreciating that people will pay substantially more for organic foods. It’s the growth area in their businesses, I can’t imagine they have no opinion on the matter.
Maybe Whole Foods doesn’t know the full implications. But I imagine that they know now. I told them, and I urge everyone here to do the same. If any company would have both the motive and the power to stop this atrocity, they would.
Well, I guess the White House Garden will be subject to this bill since The First Lady said she wants her family & all their guests to eat healthier and have access to fresh vegetables.
I wonder what pesticides she’ll be ordering…
Maybe Monsanto will give her a ‘freebee starter pack’
