We must impose term limits on all politicians. How do we get this accomplishedd?

VOTE!
Term limits for every elected official. With “NO” benefits after serving. This has become a “Monarchy” in this country. Some how this needs to be petitioned and put on the next election ballot. Its the people that can get this done , cause none of our elected royalty will limit their terms on themselves. Come on America ….. “WE MUST TAKE AMERICA BACK” 2010…vote
This would be a the biggest mistake our government ever made, and they have made many. Not only does the President need term limits, we need to limit the number of terms for Congress and Senate. Cut their pay, make them get their own insurance, and no more pay for life.
This bill may be consistently proposed, but this time, it may very well make it out of committee. Scary business.
This is a frightening amendment which would put us under a second-class monarchy and hold us hostage to the proliferation of populist legislation. The whole point of term limits was to ensure against the tyranny that comes from having too much power. Term limits make it more likely that the public servants will act in the interest of the people and not their own self-interest.
This is the most ridiculous thing I have heard in a long time. With politics being what they currently are, where the purpose is to no longer to serve the people but to win for the party, this is the first step towards a dictatorship.
Perhaps we need to take lessons from history where once before a nation was enamored by oratory rather than true leadership.
Also, the timing of this whole this is rather suspicious.
I trust that if this truly ever reaches daylight that the American people will give it a resounding “NO” and send its supporters packing. Most certainly they don’t represent the people.
We need to nip this in the bud! No more FDRs!
There should never be an amendment to overturn the term limits of the president. While they are so busy trying to undermine our consitution how about limiting the terms of all politicians. It was never ment to be a carerr for these people. I say four years for all.
president, congress, senators, governors should only be for one term, I don’t believe repeating is good for our country. I feel like we’re moving to the left like other countries, it’s like they are trying to do the same thing like venezuela, bolivia, be president forever. It’s not good. I don’t think it’s good
Given the timing and the sponsor’s party affiliation, it is a clear attempt to consolidate power and establish a Democratic party Kingdom led by Barack Obama! We need to preserve a few of the checks and balances against a monarchy or dictatorship
Yea right and the sun rises in the west and there are how many states in the union? Oh yea according to our president there are 52 states and we are killing our planet. Wake up people and start emailing your reps!!! Oh crap I forgot they aren’t listening to us anymore, guess we need to start kneeling, NOT ME!!!! They KNEEL before us!!!! OMG did I just say that?? Here comes the Obama police to take me away….
We can’t have King Obama have the chance to destroy the country and the consitution. So Presidents to two terms, Senators to 3 and Representatives to 4 terms, at the curent years they can serve per term now.
I think the President’s term should be limited to 2 or the equivalent of 8 years. I disagree with the sponsor of H.J. Res.5 Rep Jose Serrano, a D. NY. We don’t need any more Hugo Chavez or Fidel Castro presidents for life types. If a President is doing his job and working for the people, they will have accomplished much and be too burned out to run for terms beyond the second. Protect the heritage of this great country and vote NO to excessive terms for President.
Are you crazy? We fought the Revolutionary war to get away from royalty and dictatorship. We have many dead brave heroes who gave their lives to protect our freedom. I don’t want any president for life, especially Obama. I want term limits for every president (8 years is enough) and every congressperson ( 4-6 years is just fine).
I say throw the bums out and start with a new bunch every 8 years!!!!!!
career politicians on both sides of the aisleb are part of the problem – 3 year terms would continually mix up washington and prevent the sort of get elected and then immediately get re-elected mentality. It would be “you got three years, GO”. And the salaries, give me a break, service didn’t mean you could get elected, and then vote on your own salary increase. That’s outright wrong -
Part 1
The reactionary comments with respect to this bill represents a bigger threat to our liberty than the repeal of the 22nd amendment.
It has been said that the revolutionary war was fought “to get away from royalty and dictatorship” (see cjvernieri’s post). However cj than completely misses the point as do most of you commenting.
After an initial failed attempt at governing the union, The Articles of Confederation”, our founding fathers developed the most brilliant political document ever known to man, the Constitution. Learning from their initial mistakes, they knew that a strong, but delimited, central government was essential.
Part 2
They also knew that in order to prevent that central government from becoming all powerful checks and balances needed to be built in to the Constitution. Those c & bs took 4 forms. Each equal in its importance. First there was the brilliant concept of 3 separate yet co-equal branches of the government, 2 of them elected, the legislature and the judiciary, and one appointed, albeit for life to remove political considerations once appointed, the Judiciary. The fourth was a separation of the federal and state governments. They understood that two such governments actually does more to protect the most important of all rights, individual rights. Let’s not forget that the protection of individual rights is the only moral purpose of a government, any government.
Part 3
One of the most fundamental individual rights is the right to vote for the person who you, as an individual, does the best job at representing you and your community in the halls of government. The 22nd took that right away. The founders relied upon the fact that an informed populace is the best protection against tyranny. Only lazy voters want term limits. Only people who are completely jaded and cynical want term limits. I want Obama out after 1 term as much as anyone on this board, but I want the Republicans to develop real leadership and real platform that will bring this country back to the greatness and level of esteem it once held in the world.
Part 4
Term limits don’t solve that problem if the next round of people voted in are just as bad as the current bunch in Washington and whatever state capital effects your life.
Part 2 (corrected)
They also knew that in order to prevent that central government from becoming all powerful checks and balances needed to be built in to the Constitution. Those c & bs took 4 forms. Each equal in its importance. First there was the brilliant concept of 3 separate yet co-equal branches of the government, 2 of them elected, the legislature and the executive, and one appointed, albeit for life to remove political considerations once appointed, the Judiciary. The fourth was a separation of the federal and state governments. They understood that two such governments actually does more to protect the most important of all rights, individual rights. Let’s not forget that the protection of individual rights is the only moral purpose of a government, any government.
If this got passed, then what would stop someone in office from trying to declare them self a king?
The simple answer to your question, Shikyo, is the Constitution. There is no legal mechanism for any President to “declare them self a king”. It would take an outright coup or monumental changes to the Constitution to allow a sitting President to become “king”.
Repeal the 22nd Amendment? HA HA!! No freakin’ way!
You all are right, we need to ADD an amendment for term limits for all of them, and NO Gov’t pensions, separate healthcare, etc. Let them reap what they sow, and then maybe we will get Congressmen who will pass intelligent bills for the good of the American people, not the crap they have passed recently.
Oh yeah, and how about a 30% reduction in pay? They’ve earned it.
I would def support a pay reduction!! At least until they start acting like they actually KNOW who they work for: you and me. I wish I could vote on their damn paycheck. It would be a damn slight smaller, I’ll tell ya that much!
4 years in “OFFICE” is more than plenty-GOOD elected officials are getting harder and harder to find. EXAMPLE: President that is always BLAMING the country that elected him, and he tells this to foreign dignitaries, REDICULOUS by all counts.
Moderated Comment
I can’t believe there is ANYONE who would actually vote for this. Though I guess I thought that no one would pass a bill they hadn’t read, especially one that is supposed to “rescue us.” haha I am for term limits on all government officials, not just the President! I am sick of the career politicians. While I agree w some “career politicians” politics, I think there should be term limits on all Congressmen/women and that we should vote them all out.
Itssunshinexo, your last sentence betrays your own point. The best term limits mechanism, as built into the Constitution, is your vote, as you seem to understand.
Yes, but if we have term limits for a President, why couldn’t we also legislate that there be a max for them? I am saying we need to vote the current “career politicians” out and vote people IN who would amend term limits. There are some in OK who are challenging the incumbents in Congress and saying that they will impose term limits on themselves.
this might not be one WE, the people, would get a chance to even vote on. We didn’t get a say in their little ‘marshall law’ gem…watch them use that one too! As long as one party controls everything, there is no telling what they might try to do.
