All federal, state, and local publicly elected officials should have term limitations and salary caps. Senate and Congress should NOT be allowed to vote in their own pay raises. They should not receive the military rate increase in addition to their own increase. They should not have access to military facilities for medical care. They can afford outside care and perhaps if they used civilian care facilities something would finally get down about our health care system. Besides, 8 years is more than enough time for a bad president and their administration to destruct the country.

This bill is ridiculous...is the United States on its way to dictatorship? Cuba, Venezuela, North Korea, Philippines and Iraq-- to name a few, are countries that are/ were run by leaders who are in power "forever" (or at least until they die). These are the countries, I hope the United States would not like to imitate. This is a bill that constitutes abuse of power, oppression and corruption!

If this gets voted in I'll have no choice but to agree with Glen Beck. There will be civil war if the government pushes the american people too much more.

Is it the plan of that distinguished Representative from the state of New York, to have this country turned into a "Dictatorship" like that of Venezuela, to become Socialists who have no voice in what their government does? Sir if that is your plan to try and make your President into a dictator, then you sir are no American, and I suggest you leave this great country before people like you turn it into a third world country, get out while you still can!

Pay attention people. These are not games. These are times of crucial manuvering. Terms limits? Yes, we should be making them more restrictive.

What part of NO does he not understand? In less than 100 days our debt has went through the roof, China has been told by Hillary that they (the Chineese) need us and they must buy our Treasury Bills. And last but not least, now last but not least, the new Secretary of COMMERCE just happens to be Chineese. The LINE is drawn.

Power does what it wants. The people have the power, but they do not want. The U.S. will be a third world country soon and fall into utter chaos. What? They didn't tell you that on your brainwashing boxes? Better start getting friendly with your neighbors, or else you will get picked off like the cockroaches those rich corporate elites think you are.

Rep. JOse Serrano are you and all your Dem(witted) friends out of your mind. Our Constitution was written by brave, honorable men and you should know better than to second guess them. With this stupid H.J.Res.5 you have just conpared Obama to Chavez. They may buy that crap in Venezula but this is America. If you and your friends keep eroding the rights of the people there will be revolution.

"Our Constitution was written by brave, honorable men and you should know better than to second guess them." Do you mean the ones that added the 22nd Amendment in the 1950's -- because that is what this proposal is repealing.

Why do you people actually find out what you are talking about before you start mindless appealing to the founding fathers? Or better yet - how about you discuss the bill on its actual merits (or lack thereof).

Chavez loves Obama and they used to 'administer' together. Obama is really God and it's okay Congress hates term limits and so does NY.

I guess that makes me a "Brainwashed Sheople" then. (funny I always though I was a He-people)

I'm not a brainwashed Obama drone -- I just think people should be allowed to elect their own leaders. If they decide they want the same one that had the last 8 years for another 4, then I think they should be able to.

On the left, I'm sure some of the proponents are think Obama x3 or more terms. I'd be perfectly fine with them making not start until the NEXT president after Obama, to avoid any issues there.

On the right, are there any conservatives that don't think a 3rd Reagan term would have been better than Bush-41? Maybe he wouldn't have ran, and I don't have know idea about his health back then - but why shouldn't the people have had the right to elect him.

Ken, it's people like you who never think things through, vote for things like this and then cry later on.

It's no secret that Obama wants to give amnesty to 20 million ILLEGAL aliens. Did you even bother to think about why that is? Same reason Clinton did it. To get votes. Obama knows he's slipping in the polls, and the idea of getting more voters instead of trying to change the minds of the ones who are here is a simplier solution to him.

This a prime example of WHY you NEVER let a president run longer than the Constitution allowed them to. But then again, you'd have to think deeper than party lines to understand that point.

    Dear Mr Anonymous internet crank,

    1) I have thought things through, I just haven't came to the same paranoid conclusions you have.
    2) Do you mean "let them run longer than the Constitution has allowed them to since 1951"? Because that's how long this has been in it. Mindless appeals to the founding fathers aren't applicable here - as they DIDN'T put term limits in the constitution.

Can we now discuss this issue on its own merits/faults?

    Faults:
    - Possibility for corrupt leader to stay in office for extended period of time by subverting the process
    - possible George W Bush/Sarah Palin ticket in 2012
    - possible Bill/Hillary Clinton ticket in 2016
    Toss-up:
    - Possibility for popular leader to stay in office for extended period of time
    - Trust that people are smart enough to choose their own leaders
    Merits:
    - Allows people to keep a leader they want (FDR during depression/WWII)

Ken, having unlimited term limits is really not a good thing. There is a saying that goes, "Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely". Do you think that it might be possible that perhaps a person with horrible intentions could assume the seat of President (if we're not calling it a dictatorship by then) and MAKE it so that he is elected time and time again against the will of the people? This is a very real possibility and we have seen it happen in governments all over the world.

Do I think that is possible - yes.

Do I think the 22nd amendment would prevent someone like that from taking over - no. It would just make it harder for them to claim legitimacy. But I'm assuming if it came to that point, their legitimacy would be more based on guns than constitutional law anyway.

In some instances the 4 year term seems to be too long for some of these people but it should be left at that NO MORE than that, and a MAXIMUM of 2 terms. From now on "Born and RAISED" in the U.S.A. NO exceptions.

All elected officials should get no more than one term. If we did this then they would have to vote based on principles rather than whether or not they get re-elected.

Allowing more than one term of office is bad enough, but removing term limits is asinine!

I think your idea would just end up turning the government wholly to the bureaucrats - as they would be the only ones who knew enough about how things worked. Especially in the house, where you'd get a whole knew set of people every two years, who'd be completely dependent on the congress' staff for most of their term.

I agree we must contact our congressmen to vote against changing the term limits for the president. I have my doubts that there will even be an election in 2012.

The previous administration setup secret prisons where people were kept and tortured for years, without trial or any legal review. And you are worried about this administration? Where was your concern for the past 8 years?

Any Congress person who votes for this repeal should be targeted for defeat the next time they run. We have had enough. If the opposite of pro is con, does that mean that the opposite of progress is congress? I think so.
