Nice to see the bill has passed Congress. I’m sure the study will prove that providing service dogs to assist wounded vets will be a cost savings in the long run.
The concept is great and may be beneficial in some cases, but I cannot support it in its current form. The bill specifies that the dogs would be acquired from non-profit organizations that do not charge for the dogs, lodging, or care. Yet it provides full reimbursement (without limitations) for all costs. (I want a diamond studded collar and a gold plated kennel with heat and air conditioning please) If the purpose of this bill is to provide pets for vets, there are thousands of free dogs currently available through local groups. If the purpose of this bill is to study the benefits of dogs in various situations, many studies exist and can be utilized. We are not using the resources we already have in place. Sorry – my vote at this time is no.
