If they do introduce something for us 99ers ..heres how I think its going to play out ..1st they go on vacation the whole month of August, then September they introduce something and nothing will pass until Nov., right around the election period . clever of them huh..What 99 can wait until then..8 months with no income? most will be living with family or be homeless.. If they wanted to help they could have added extra weeks to the tier 3 or 4 .. its all political ..and we 99ers are the ones to suffer with no jobs to be found .. I cant find a job can you?

im thinking about starting a website where all of us unemployed people can stream live video of us crying and telling our stories of how unemployment has changed us maybe call it unemploymentnightmere.org i dont know. this thing is just ridiculous and sassy your comment about waiting until november might be exactly what they will do and if they do thats just plain evil and they should still be voted out then too.

Hi nancym, Just saying hello from this “kaddycorner state” of Washington.
Excellent video you found there!
As the old saying goes, “it’s better than a sharp stick in the eye.”
I’m still some how scraping by. Summer finally arrived, the vegetable garden is blooming. Same ole. Survival. Being so reverted back to the basics, wondering, can I ever get back to the main stream? If you know what I mean. Found another mystical temp. job. At least they haven’t tried to screw me over, or cuss me out all day long. Yippy, and nobody has stolen any of my tools yet. Wow. I get an untold amount of hours tomorrow even. Just being pouuuuuw.(That’s bubonic for poor.) Haven’t gotten paid yet either.

The debate in Congress on passing a Tier 5 seems to be on how to fund it. Some favor printing money, more debt. Some favor funding it by cutting something from the budget, no more debt. So to help those who favor cutting something from the budget, maybe we can vote on what to cut. I suggest starting with the U.S Department of Education with a 2010 budget of $46.7 billion. If Congress eliminated this department and left education to the states (as provided in the constitution), there would be $46.7 billion for a Tier 5. Nancym do you have the numbers for funding Tier 5 in 2010?

I don’t have those numbers at my fingertips, maybe someone else here does. But I don’t at all want to eliminate the Dept of Education, and I sure don’t want all education left to the states. For me, it’s a matter of getting rid of just a few of those billion-dollar pork barrel defense contracts for unneeded weapon systems that even our Secretary of Defense and the Pentagon say they have no use for!

Even those who are strong on defense and favor both the Iraq and Afghanistan wars could ditch some of those systems and still not be upset, except for those few Congressmen who were paid off for pushing those contracts in the first place.

And you can add the elimination of just a few of our 400 or so overseas bases to that list!

I agree that reducing defense spending, or should I say offense spending, would be a good way to save money. Suppose we cut from the U.S. military budget everything not needed for the defense of the U.S. That would include cutting spending for foreign wars, foreign military bases, military aid to Haiti, etc.

Anyone else have a suggestion for cutting expenses from the U.S. budget to fund Tier 5?

when you people are making your calls and sending your letters make sure you ask the aids if there congressperson plans to support the republican sponsored unemployment extension that provides a 16 weeks tier 5 for the people that have gone through all of the existing tiers.

Maybe it will start a race to see eho can get their tier five on the floor the fastest

According to some articles I have been reading lately there are 4 million long term unemployed 99’ers that have exhausted all unemployment benefits. In my opinion what would help is if we can get all of those 4 million long term unemployed and others that has exhausted all unemployment benefits to focus on one website where we can get general data that could convince Congress that like for example some of us are over 50 years of age and every time we go to an interview the response we get is you are overqualified (in certain cases too old but they can’t tell you that). Right now I feel that Congress is hoping that all the long term unemployed will not join together and start volunteering general data that could be taken to the media and then force Congress to look into it. Start contacting everyone else who is unemployed to start looking at focusing and input general data on one website only. If this was to happen then I think Congress would be more encouraged to get a Tier 5 going.

Yeah, I resisted the term “99ers” from the beginning, but I finally gave up when it hit the Ed Schultz Show. Maybe another term could take its place, but probably too late. And the word “exhaustees” just doesn’t have the same ring to it. :)

I’m not sure it’s feasible to get everyone on a single site, IMO The most active and “fierce” one at the moment seems to be GiveUsOurMoney.org, but it can be pretty rude and not a favorite for everyone. And I don’t even know if it could handle the traffic load, whatever that needs to be, unlike bigger sites. We see that even the nonprofit-funded places like OC get choked rather frequently.

I wonder if we could focus on a larger network of a few main sites, though, and now that the push for the dates extension is done, if we could harness the advocacy power of NELP and maybe even MoveOn, who is slowly becoming aware that we have a problem here about jobs! I’m not personally big on Facebook, but it could probably play a role in the networking.

It would be a good idea to really get a solid package of facts about the 99ers out there to the press, though. The DOL figures are slowly updated, but they don’t have all the state data still, not sure why. Worth checking into some of that, ammunition for calls to Congress and the press. If we all are saying the same “talking points” (ha-ha!), maybe they won’t think we’re making these numbers up!

As for the other issue, about those paid links sites, etc., I tend to have a different perspective on all that. I even checked into how that process works, as with Examiner.com, for example. Since I have done editorial work but I don’t have a lot of samples, I thought of getting a column on Examiner that dealt with unemployment or some aspect of it, since I was already posting so much advice for free that I thought maybe I could use that same amount of time and have some work to show and even get a few part-time bucks for it to keep me afloat. I even got solicitations for doing that, but maybe they solicit everyone, I don’t know.

When I saw what were the general requirements, and did a little Google spree on how people were handling that kind of effort, I found that a very few actually made anything remotely worth their time, and some of these sites actually pressured their writers to get a certain number of articles in each week, IF they became popular.

2)I decided if I wanted to have weekly pressure to write and then get paid pennies for it, I’d be better off spending my time trying to get actual editorial work, which pays around $25 an hour if you can get it. (And when I say pennies, I mean literally pennies; to get even $10-20 bucks a month from these blog sites, you would have to get quite a few readers! And these helpful blogging efforts that any of us do, as you must admit, can be time-consuming; getting a few pennies doesn’t even pay for a fraction of the phone, internet, etc., to say nothing of the time lost.)

So if anyone is deceptive here, I consider these faux news sites, like Examiner.com, to be deceptive. I wonder how much they are making on all these bloggers, a few of whom, as we’ve seen, are quite good, or at least helpful. And Examiner.com is constantly posting tons of “job” ads all over, but with a few exceptions for some of their small regular staff, these are not jobs at all.
