kevlarr – I totally agree but mccain probably won’t respond to your anger in a proactive way. I even agree with you on NAFTA. The only way to reach out to these people is to show how the passing of this bill will harm them directly. For example, how would mccain like it if one of his children had allergies to chemicals processed in their prescribed medications and the only way to remedy the situation is to purchase a natural herbal supplement but could not lest they get sent to jail or fined – or better yet how would mccain like to have to hide from the public eye the fact that he takes vitamins and minerals. It sounds completely preposterous does’nt it?

    http://www.sybervision.com/reviews/TriSlim-Ultra.php#c5t_form

My friend tried these TRI SLIM ULTRA diet pills on a “free trial” and I just found out they charged her bank card $99
    AND she never received them
AND she is is on heart and diabetes medication and these “supplements” would probably have killed her, if she had taken them

what is the supplement, vitamin industry doing to police itself?

Please warn your friend with serious medical conditions to check the ingredients in any supplement with her doc before taking. Many of these supplements for diet increase metabolism and could over tax the heart. Each individual must be responsible and knowledgeable of their own medical issues and those things that affect them. Dr. Mercola is a great source of knowledge for her.

Have you any idea the amount of people that die due to the side effects of chemicals that are processed in medications? Diet Pills are NOT supplements and should not be categorized with natural organic nutrients essential for the well being of the human body.

Kristy, please be aware that natural organic ephedra can be just as hazardous, and produce the same physiologic response as Big Pharma made epinephrine. The effects of red rice yeast, while less potent, are the same as statins, because red rice yeast contains statins—and as a result should be taken with CoQ10, and patients should be watched for signs of muscle ache, memory loss, etc.
While this law McCain is shilling with is wrong, a Pollyanna approach to the medicinal properties of some supplements can lead to problems, too.
Overall, I want the FDA out of my vitamin cabinet, but as a biochemist I have the experience to see a problem and avoid it. Do you?

ZERO people have died from nutritious diet supplements. I thought the GOP (McCain is one) were trying to get government OUT of our lives. What a laugh!

To use your words, “have you any idea the amount of people that die due to the side effects …” of AUTHORIZED PRESCRIPTION DRUGS???

I add that the blog on this site that makes sense is from
Supplements to go…. explaining why the FDA already has all necessary authority to police supplements.

this is the best reason to oppose this bill

For myself I have started trying to grow many of the herbal supplements and make my own tinctures

  • Comm_reply
    kristyannewright7 02/19/2010 12:36pm

You rock for growing and making tinctures – that is what we all need to do.

  • Geminga 02/19/2010 11:37am

For anyone with a pre-existing medical condition who takes a supplement with out a doc’s OK or considerable self research is taking a chance. Most supplements warn you of this. Tylenol is very harmful to those with pre-existing liver problems. Shall we take it all off the market? Of course not. Neither should supplements be removed or dosed to the point of ineffective. For the informed this is the first step toward “Codex Alimentarius”,the food code intended as part of the One World Order of the WHO. One size fits all….every where in the world. The doses are dangerously low OTC and for those who need extra it will only be available via BIG PHARMA at highly inflated prices and possibly only via a Dr.. This bill is a fist in the door to destroy our freedom to control our health destiny outside the realm of the medical industrial complex. This bill is a fist in the door to destroy our freedom to choose outside the medical industrial complex.

Bad Health = more pressure on our health care system
Bad Health = more pressure on our economy
Bad Health = sub -standard workers

Good Health = proper balance of diet, lifestyle, exercise and sleep habits
Humans respond better to natural organic products/ingredients because we are made of organic materials – that is why pharmaceuticals rarely heal any of our conditions but only provide temporary relief – we need a larger collection of experts on this issue. Since we have to depend on Chinas economy for financial help why dont we consult their health and wellness knowledge since they are so successful unless of course the point of bill s 3002 is to keep people from being healthy.

  • healthyfree 02/22/2010 1:48pm

Bill S3002 introduced by McCain is a horrendous idea. Approximately 250,000 deaths (3rd leading cause of death) occur each year in the U.S. due to iatrogenic treatment. Approximately 100,000 of these deaths of wrong treatment from allopathic medicine are due to the negative effects of pharmaceutical drugs—either erroneously prescribed or purely from the very detrimental effects of these drugs. There are no such statistics surrounding the use of natural herbs & supplements including the use of micronutrient supplementation. It is both irresponsible & outright ridiculous that McCain would introduce & support something called the “Dietary Supplement Safety Act”. Given the quoted grievous statistics above, why aren’t you spending your time & efforts protecting us citizens from the ‘safety’ of the pharmaceutical companies, McCain?! Let us determine within ourselves whether we choose to purchase herbs & supplements for our own truly personal health & well-being—someone’s got to do it.

I’m pretty sure the purpose of the bill is make sure that these companies aren’t selling us snake oil and telling us that is “promotes healthy vision” or “joint health” etc. Also in the wake of the recent lawsuits against certain vitamin supplement producers who’ve been misleading the public as to how much "illegally undisclosed and unnecessarily high levels of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) compounds, according to a lawsuit filed by an environmental group in California court.(‘How safe is the fish oil you’re giving your kids?’-San Fransisco Chronical " are in their products, we need regulation like this more than ever.

You might want to do some basic research. I’m pretty sure there is very little evidence of receiving snake oil when one is purchasing supplements and herbs through normal, reputable stores. Fish oil distillates should be the least of your worries when you have hundreds of thousands of deaths occurring annually due to pharmaceutical drugs being sold to unsuspecting people.

This “regulation” involves the implementation of the Codex standards (NOT NEW SENSIBLE ONES) The codex standards currently declares nutrients and suppliments as toxins (e.g. Vitamin – C) You want the government to regulate all your vitamins and minerals away? This is a way to kill and control us… Take greendoc’s advice and do some basic research. Start at www.healthfreedomusa.org

  • MaryHutton 02/23/2010 5:53am

Please listen to the American people – we are tired of having our freedom walked on – let us make the decision about our health care!! Take time watching the PRESCRIPTION DRUG adverse side effects AND the yearly deaths – leave our supplements alone!!! We are tired of your thinking you know more than we do about our health!!!!!

  • vankaypie 02/24/2010 8:56am

I would like to continue having the right to buy herbs that boost my immune function, lesson the severity of pain without pain killers, and increase my health and longevity. I avoid prescription drugs if at all possible, and I think it’s my right to choose alternative, natural, herbal health over another drug from another drug company. This bill effects friends who use naturally desiccated thyroid medicines as well, and they deserve to have their choice of health care.

  • Lesgeisel 03/12/2010 9:36am

This Bill will affect fixed and low income who believe in preventative care. It disproportionately affects aging who require supplements. Big Pharma will benefit the most and that is why I believe Sen. McCain is no longer in touch.

  • donx1 03/16/2010 4:48pm

The FDA is in hot water for being unable to monitor peer review articles submitted for prescription drugs already. Big Phamra routinely cherry picks data (Wall Street Journal & Readers Digest)and the FDA rubber stamps them.
In their defense they are under staffed and under funded. Against them is the FACT that they are staffed by Big Pharma former employees. Further there is a monetary bias against preventative medicine that permeates those in that institution. This bill will make a bigger problem that it will solve.

In 2008, there were NO DEATHS caused by a dietary
supplement, according to the most recent information collected by the
U.S. National Poison Data System. The new 174-page annual report of the
American Association of Poison Control Centers, published in the journal Clinical Toxicology reports that not a man, woman, or child died from the use of vitamins, minerals, herbs, melatonin, Ayurvedic preparations, or Chinese formulas.
Compare that to the safety of Big Pharma. As the late Robert S. Mendelsohn, MD said, many doctor’s decision making philosohy is corrupted from “First do no harm” to “First DO SOMETHING!” Drugs often provide that action in remedies that produce in side effects the symptoms they are supposed to cure.

  • gelion414 04/13/2010 10:55am

This Bill is SICK!!!! So are you mr mccain (I use all lower-case because you are lower than dirt) and all your crooked nasty friends. This bill will result in the destruction of DSHEA and the harmonization with Codex Food Standards.. Standards that declare nutrients as toxins!!! Making most of them COMPLETELY illegal, and others you can’t possess without a prescription (Like Vitamin – C) This evil monstrosity Codex is already resulting in record numbers of starvation and deaths related to PREVENTABLE malnourished related diseases in the European Union.. The neo aristocrats are attempting to implement genocide world-wide and they’re trying to do it through food. DO NOT LET THIS BILL OR ANY ONE LIKE IT SET THE STAGE FOR CODEX TO COME TO AMERICA.. Also, refusing to eat your genetically altered and chemically treated food will be just the thing they need to make use of all those F.E.M.A camps they have sprinkled across the country.

  • llgriffin 05/11/2010 3:48pm

This makes me so angry I could scream!!! I need supplements to treat an autoimmune thyroid illness that doesn’t respond to prescription drugs and that most doctors don’t even know how to treat. We just have to stop this craziness somehow.

  • theboatlady 09/28/2010 6:11am

I would be in bad shape if not for my supplements. I take products from a very good company. Of course, you have to be careful, but staying away from OTC products and prescriptions is even better. Do not let a bill like this pass. I want my right to decide what I want to take!
